As a German Historian working for the IFZ in Munich i just wanna add this about Rune and even Swastika Usage in German History and Culture some might find interesting: So, for example down here in Southern Bavaria in the Alpine Region it's not uncommon to go to a Graveyard and instead of the "Star = next to Date of Birth" and "Cross = next to Date of Death" you see an "Algiz Rune" facing upwards next to Date of Birth and one facing downwards next to Date of Death. You even see that on Gravestones from the late 1700s. The "Algiz Rune" in general is also very common in the Exterieur Design of a traditional "Fachwerkhaus". Same is true for many other Runes. Regarding Swastikas, you mostly see "Rounded Swastikas" or "Sunwheels" also from all the way back, here in the Bavarian Alps we got a "Jagdvilla" that was built in 1623 and it has a huge round Swastika/Sunwheel above the Entrance. It's so common here because "Alpine Paganism" is one of those old pre-christian Beliefs and Culture that is native here and because when Christianity converted everyone, they didn't bother as much with us Mountain Folks in and around the Alps. So luckily because of that, these Traditions survived to this Day. For example: My Paternal Grandfather is from an Alpine Pagan Family (he's still alive at 104 years old now and a WW2 Veteran). Meanwhile my Paternal Grandmother was a Catholic. So once my Paternal Grandfather dies he already told me he wants the Algiz Runes for Date of Birth and Death when it's added under the Star and Cross of his Wife. "Perchtenlauf" for example is a Tradition that exists all around the Alps, in France, Switzerland, Austria, Italy (but with a different Name and some other Differences. But it's an Alpine Pagan Tradition, that's also where Krampus originates from. Prost & Cheers from Berchtesgaden in the Bavarian Alps

The ᛊ or ᛋ rune was actually originally named after the sun (Sól in Old Norse, Sigel in Old English). In Lists's Armanen rune system, it was renamed as Sig (sounding like _Sieg_ "victory"), possibly because of a misinterpretation of the Old English name. Might also be inspired by the Old Norse concept of victory runes (sigrún) and the personal Name Sigrún.

I read an autobiography that was translated by a family member, The Man in the Black Fur Coat. Looking at the memoirs to put it in book form, the relative had issues understanding the language as it was a weird dialect he couldn't make sense of. He asked around and found that it was written in sütterlin, which was taught in the interwar years, and ousted in 1941. It had some rune-like characters. Thought it was an interesting note.
Just a suggestion for Mark. Very well done program as always. I was in Austria year's ago and can't remember the location but you video reminded me of a very interesting church yard with several monuments to WWII. and older graves of locals. A local Artist did several arches throughout the church yard with a lot of peaceful symbols, some religious and some not so much. I hesitate to say more. Some people may not understand the peaceful intent. I respect the dead no matter what side of any conflict. I was shown the place by a local because I have such respect. I had family on both sides. Another reason most survivors don't talk about it. I hope you find it and carry on the respect.
Brilliant! Glad you are here Mark. The view these days is to forget history, never mind that, they say. Two very important words for everyone to keep in mind is,”historical empathy “. In order to judge the past, one must hop into a Time Machine of sorts, see the sights, smell the smells, and live in that time period in order to understand the mindsets and atmosphere and politics at that time. To judge is easy, to understand, not so much…that’s why so many judge.

The Hakenkreuz was as you note known as the "Swastika" in Hindu belief, and had been used by them for centuries before Hitler. I read somewhere that runes, or a variant of such, were in local use in some remote parts of Sweden upp to late 19 / early 20 century. There are preserved letters from people who emigrated to USA who wrote back home in runes describing their lives in the new country. My speculation: This is probably because in those remote parts of Sweden Christianity progressed slowly and certain pre Christian traditions, among them the use of runes, survived very long. Very similar the way @chartreux1532 in an other comment here describes how runes tradition survived in remote parts of the Alps.
Excellent video as always Mark. I have a suggestion for another video. Recently here in Australia we have had laws that have banned the display and sale of the swastika and the SS runes and some state governments have banned the use of the Nazi salute. I would like to know what other nations have done the same given that for almost 80 years since the end of the second world war we had done quite well without such laws as well as that there is no ban on symbology from other axis nations and fascist movements such as Franco's Spain Fascist Italy, Vichy France, the British Union of Fascists or even some of the runes in this video. There has been the occasional media interest in the Croatian Ustasha symbols that have been seen at football games - a Croatian Australian football team even sparked an outcry over their team photo taken in a community club hall where a photo of Ante Pavlich can clearly be seen in the background. I suspect that most of the countries that have banned the display and sale of anything with the Swastika and SS runes are in Europe it would be interesting to know what the legal situation is in other countries as collectors of militaria, coins and banknotes, stamp collectors and even collectors of flags are affected by the new laws.
I am fascinated by these symbols and read as much as I can about them. Their origins are interesting, and I do see value in them. I find it ignorant that these symbols are supposed to be disregarded because they were used for a few years by a government our government decided to fight. Is the crescent, the hammer, or the sickle so reviled?

I always appreciate your concise, informative creations such as this. As a long-time student of runes, I often encounter misinformation and outright fabrications about their historical use. Unfortuantely, the damage done to the reputation of these ancient writing symbols by Hitler and his adherents is still with us today and is not likely to end any time soon. When it comes to runes, it is always a tricky subject. Around me there are several villages and cities with the Wolfsangel as or in their sigil. One city dates back to the 9th century, another to the 12th. Though it doesn't say when the Wolfsangel became their actual sigil. Propably a few hundred years later. Old English was also written in runic script. Even after adoption of the Latin alphabet some runic characters were retained such as those for the voiced and invoiced "th" sound , which Latin didn't have. It was the British in the early 1800s that came up with the notion of an "Aryan" race from misreading the Indian Vedas, religious texts written in Sanskrit. In these "aryas" referred to those who observed the religion of the Vedic scriptures most strictly, it didn't indicate ethnicity.

Might also be inspired by the Old Norse concept of victory runes (sigrún) and the personal Name Sigrún.
Interesting
That’s because the sun represents Victory (over the darkness) in germanic pagan tradition
Plz take into consideration, that the runic System is much oder and was sadly Interpreted very one sided.
To keep it short
The Sig rune , Der Sieg (Victory, from vici?) das Siegel (the seal) , Sigil, have all one essence in it, to reach a goal or fullfill a special task with a 'non direct' approach, as the line from Start to finish would go left, than right and just from there hitting the ' finish'.
Physically, emotinally, Mental...
All good things are 3, as a very common german (i believe or guess its a common pagan believe) saying goes.
Hope u find the pieces!
Fascinating, thank you for posting Mark
Hi Adrian
When I visited Japan in '98, maps, yes paper maps, used the reversed subject symbol to designate Buddhist temple locations.
I also think of my ancestors when I see that symbol as well as Odin and Thor

Hi
The Runic Alphabet has undergone many changes since the 'Original ' Futhark and their meanings changed with them. An interesting Video as always Mr Felton Yet even to this day we see Runic Designs in Many Symbols and Notices etc. all over the place!
The burial marker was very interesting, including the "born" and "died" dates, with appropriate symbols for each.
Very interesting video, Dr. Mark. Would love to see an independent video on the Ahnenerbe!
The Hakenkreuz was as you note known as the "Swastika" in Hindu belief, and had been used by them for centuries before Hitler. The same symbol was used by the Navajo tribe of the American southwest likewise for centuries, and they called it the "Whirling Logs" symbol. To them, it was a sacred symbol for good. I have a Navajo bracelet made in the 1920s that features the Whirling Logs symbol on it.
Well..Dr Felton has done it again...Great job..once again..keep them coming.
Having been posted at Sennelager and Paderborn..I know and have visited Wevelsburg (in its post blown up..of course) site....quite remarkable place..even now in the depths of the lovely German countryside
While the history was fairly unknown, I'm familiar with the runes from modeling WWII vehicles. A hobby and history lesson.
Late to this video, and l must view this again .
Excellent breakdown of the ruin symbols.
Thanks Mark 😊
The Germanic symbols are far more ancient and important than the time of the Nazis.
I absolutely love these videos...Dr. Felton is a very interesting historian. I also enjoy reading the comments. Thank you for this channel.

My thoughts exactly. I've worked in EMS for many years and had no clue my uniform had a Nazi symbol until now

Another gem from Dr. Felton.
Hi Lawrence
The Swastika is an ancient european symbol, oldest found in Ukraine 15,000 years old.
nope , it was first found in the ruins of the Indus valley civilization dating back to 3000 bce , its a sanskrit word meaning "well being"
They still have plenty of swastikas on display in Ukraine
@@Dont_Tread_on_Me448well said
@@Dont_Tread_on_Me448cope its a Proto-Indoeuropeans symbol
The oldest known widespread use is from Ukraine, but if you look at the Vinca culture it was literally on all of their surviving artwork so it’s not necessary just an Indo-European symbol like is widely believed
Greatest WWII historian. Great videos and a great theme song. Thank you sir.
Always brilliant!!! Thanks Dr. Felton for another informative video!!!
Hi hart
The odal rune is still used widely in the bundeswehr as the rank insignia for hauptfeldwebel (sergeant major).
Interesting subject matter, thanks.
Outstanding as always Doctor Felton! Well done!
Hakenkreuz doesn't translate to "crooked cross" Haken means hook so it's more like cross of hooks or hooked cross
Thank you for your fascinating and unique research into this period of history. Regards from Australia.
You will find that the hammer and sickle are Deeply Hated in the Ukraine Especially Now!!! 🤠👍🇺🇦
The symbolism would still be vilified by competing cultures even if WW2 never happened.
@@ptownpresident Yes, but I don't care what other cultures say.

Himmler had a love for the esoteric and even had a search launched for the Holy Grail in the south of France.
What's with the point of looking for it though?
Did they expend their store of Holy Hand Grenades in said quest?

What is symbolic about which way the Eagle's head faces?
I've seen 3 different versions, both left, right and forward facing.
If I remember rightly, an earlier video of Dr Felton's said the SS always had their eagles' heads facing left.
Isn't the Party eagle and the Wehrmacht eagles facing different ways? That way nobody can sneak up on Germany. 😮
The eagle faces right if its being used the by Nazi Party/SS and left if its being used by the German Government/ Wehrmacht.

The German federal military uses the Odal rune or a very similar looking design as a badge for the upper NCO ranks.
Right, the Bundeswehr uses completely different rank insignia from the WW2 Wehrmacht, with the exception of the traditional "arabesque" general's collar patches. Interesting the the East German NVA used the Wehrmacht pattern rank insignias.

i find this fascinating
I always appreciate your concise, informative creations such as this. As a long-time student of runes, I often encounter misinformation and outright fabrications about their historical use. Unfortuantely, the damage done to the reputation of these ancient writing symbols by Hitler and his adherents is still with us today and is not likely to end any time soon. Groups and individuals today often try to use runes that are associated with the Third Reich with the excuse that they were "stolen," but the true motives of such people are often aligned more with modern Nazi-eaque ideology than returning these pagan symbols to their former status.
I find it interesting that you studied the runes and don't understand that the runes would still be vilified today even if WW2 never happened.

It is sad that those very old symbols will forever be associated with the darkest time and worst ideology in human history.
(Still going to wear my tiwaz rune ring and necklace everywhere i go though. Because the god Tyr rocks 🤘)
Thanks for the great video, mr Felton
Old English was also written in runic script. Even after adoption of the Latin alphabet some runic characters were retained such as those for the voiced and invoiced "th" sound , which Latin didn't have. It was the British in the early 1800s that came up with the notion of an "Aryan" race from misreading the Indian Vedas, religious texts written in Sanskrit. In these "aryas" referred to those who observed the religion of the Vedic scriptures most strictly, it didn't indicate ethnicity.
My great grandfather was SS, he was part of the Latvian-Legion, 15th Waffen Grenadier Division. I don't know much about him since he fled after the war, leaving his wife and child (my grandfather) behind. I was told by my grandfather that it was because the Soviets were "hunting" down the Nazis post war, but I cannot say that for certain. I find, history from the 20th century fascinating, it was so polarizing and even though it really wasn't all that long ago, we don't have a full grasp of everything that happened.
Note that the Latvian 15th Waffen-SS Grenadier Division took part in the defense of Berlin, along with the 11th Waffen-SS Panzer-Grenadier Division "Nordland", part of the French 33rd Waffen-SS Grenadier Division "Charlemagne", and the Spanish Waffen-SS Battlegroup "Ezquerra".

@@me.ne.frego. Technically speaking, the Romans adopted many gods and customs from the Greeks, and made them their own, as we now know. Let's just say it was all "inspiration" for the Romans.
