  • To get organised I use the 'Stanley Sort Master Organisers' however you do really need to have a shelving unit for them to sit in to use them efficiently.

Thanks Steve. The second one is easier for a beginner with less experience using the Router..I will make one.
Today I made a Garden Screen 1.8m tall with bredth 1.8m and wheels to move around.
I made a mistake but later corrected.Truly it is hard to see the error till you start building!
    Built more.Learn through error.

Just a suggestion, before fitting the back panel, drill the 4 mounting holes and position the back where you want to mount the cabinet on the wall. You can then more easily mark and drill the holes in the wall. If the holes are uniformly positioned in the back panel, it won't matter which way it's assembled regarding top/bottom or front/back.

I can’t recommend enough getting your local diy shop to do your cutting for you. My local does the first 10 cuts free and then 50p a cut. It makes projects so much easier and you don’t have to worry about how to get an 8 x 4 sheet of MDF home. Love the channel Stuart!!

Great service. My local providers has every bit of timber you'd need but they would laugh if you asked them to cutting anything.

Some stockists have a self-serve cutting service - a handsaw hanging from a nail! A good idea though to get them to cut the wood for you though if they have one of those fancy (and accurate) machines.

Maybe have them make rough cuts to get the plywood into manageable sizes, but I'm not trusting someone I don't know with final dimensions on my project pieces.
There are craftsmen out there who are skilled, precise and care about quality, but there are lots of crapsmen out there too. Until I know which one you are, I won't trust you with cutting my lumber.

@@lowslow3612 completely agree with this, especially if you’re making built in furniture the final cuts should be made on site.

I've cut up whole sheets in the car park with a cordless circular saw just to fit them in the car, got some funny looks from people but I didn't really care. As for instore cutting services I would only trust them to cut a little oversize of the dimensions I would need - I would want to do the final cuts myself.

LOL... I came up with this same need and design (modulo smaller sortmasters and more shelves). I built it last weekend and failed miserably because I did not properly align the guide for the router. The rebate was slightly diagonal, so that the shelves could not possibly fit. I'll redo it this weekend. I should have looked for Stuart's advice first.

Don't forget to label each organiser so you know what's in each one. Saves you from having to randomly pull each one out to find the M8 nuts

Brilliant, thanks Stuart, this is classic "Proper Diy" content, well thought out and great presentation with hints, tips and humour scattered liberally throughout ! I particularly like the bit where you encourage new DIYers to not get stressed about perfection and "have a go" there's so much perfect content out there that does little to inspire this attitude so good on you mate !

Great tip. I recently made a cabinet for my conservatory, and rather than wrestle with full sheets of MDF in the car park, and then cut them to the exact size on the table saw or track saw, I made a cutting list, using the excellent and free, Cut List Pro app, before going to my local 10 free and then 50p DIY store, where most of the cuts were done on the in-store panel saw. A lot less hassle, MDF dust, and a great time saver.
It is not cheating, it's boxing - no pun intended - clever!

Really love that second method, Stuart! In a way it's the same principle I used for my workbench, which is modelled after Paul Sellers' plywood workbench, where he designed it so that all mortise and tenons are just strips of plywood glued together, leaving out certain areas to make the mortises. Very clever way of building, and sturdy as an oak.

1:28 "... but I don't want to throw them away".
Very sensible. It's a well-known fact that whenever you throw something out that you've had lying around for no use for years, you'll find out you need it for something the day after.

Excellent. I did something similar last year. A tip for cutting the shelves is to always measure and put your rail on the part of wood you want to keep. That way the measurements are accurate and you can use your first one as the template. When you measure and keep the bit to the right of the saw its called the waste side and that's when you need to consider the kerf of the blade. It takes a bit of getting used to, most of us naturally keep the longer piece to our left and cut a smaller piece off the right side.

Great idea and vey well explained. I made one of these a few years back (probably based on your videos) but “tweaked” the idea, made 8 shelves and connected using drawer runners. This increased the weight (and cost) so I added wheels on the bottom, then scrap hardwood as a cutting top, it all quickly got out of hand!

Some proper “quality” fluffy DIY shed MDF there Stuart. I’ve built storage for my sort master boxes that I hold different sized screws and bolts in, but rather than putting it on the wall I put castors on it and mounted the band saw and drill press on top. Keeps the tool at the right height and provides easily accessible storage

Well that was a groovy project….. anyway for me a 12.7mm router bit has always been my go to size due to size variation of materials. With MDF 0.5 mm is then taken up by expansion of material with the water based glue (PVA)

I bought a few (okay, a few dozen) Allit Europlus Flex cases (that have internal "buckets" you can take out), but instead of shelves I built a couple of rack-style cabinets, with rails (angled back slightly so the cases slide in naturally).
I don't think that would work with those Stanley cases, though, due to the way the sides are designed (the Europlus cases have a wider edge just under the lid, that can slide on the rails and support the case without the need for an actual shelf).

I had the same idea last year. I built shelf cabinet for 10 orange boxes from OBI (6€ per one). My cabined is not fixed on wall but has wheels so I can move it. It is built from old ikea kallax which has perfect depth, so this reduced number of cuts.

Imho rabbit is overkill. I used just srews. It not big load and box pushed on shelf near corner. My cabined has no back, just stop blocks to allow dust go away.

No surprise that 12mm MDF is not actually 12mm in size when a 2x4 is actually 1.5x3.5
What is the point of labelling something with the wrong size ?
Just imagine the fuss if a litre of petrol turned out to be 0.8 of a litre
