In my mind, it’s because both are a means of performatively expressing yourself and trying on different identities. They’re also both very expensive hobbies, and are misinterpreted as overtly sexual (although in recent years, drag has somewhat lost this misconception due to its newfound mainstream popularity.)
Honestly, this really encapsulates a trend that I've noticed with furries in that a lot of them are also lgbt+. I was once in an lgbt+ dnd group and legit 3 out of 5 members were also furries. In particular, the two trans women liked that their fursonas better represented their gender identities and that people would so easily accept these female presenting fursonas as who they were in online spaces, when they probably wouldn't as readily accept them if they could see their faces. The new wave of dnd players has a similarly large lgbt+ population for similar reasons of allowing you to be whoever you want to be and allowing you to explore gender expression and presentation (my new dnd group also has a trans woman and her bisexual wife)
Deadass most furries just wanna draw dogs and cosplay in funky animals costumes. Nothing wrong with that really. Just having fun. edit: learned that most profits from conventions tend to go to animal shelters so that's fucking NEAT

I just rewatched this video and honestly my favorite part is at 4:18 where the person she's talking to seems to be on the defensive and is talking about how only a small portion of furries is weird or bad, and then Teya starts talking about the things she likes about furries and what a cool experience the con is, and the person she's talking to immediately goes "yes!" and seems both so relieved and so excited to talk about this thing that they clearly love and means so much to them.
Frost Studio as an ex furry hater, I can tell you that the bad side of furrys is not hard to find, if anything I would have had to avoid it. After you start getting more and more bad furry stuff you start enjoying looking at the worst part (since it’s kinda funny). Then all of the stuff you see is bad furry stuff.
I honestly think that furries are kinda cool? (like the not cringy ones) Like..most put a lot of effort in Art, suits and stuff like that. It's really cool.
And I know a lot who dress in their fursuits and goes to Children Hospitals and stop for little kids and make them smile. Which I find delightful to be honest

That one guy said the thing about anime, I think he's right. I stopped cosplaying a few years ago because since 8 or 9 I would get touched inappropriately a lot at conventions. The last time I ever went outside in cosplay I was sexually assaulted by a volunteer at a convention in the USA, 'Anime Expo'. I was 13 years old and I'm male. This community seems very tame and kind compared to that. I hope they retain that niche appeal and don't become ruined by 'normalization'(?) and deviant outsiders.
I've always found that furry cons respect peoples' boundaries much more than a place like an anime con. Any harassment like that will get noticed and reported, ESPECIALLY targeted at younger attendees. That stuff does not fly with us.

As I said, that was a fursuit rave! It's a rave specifically made for fursuits, because your vision is limited in a fursuit and it's dark in a rave. So, it's a health hazard if non-fursuiters go in there because they wouldn't be seen.
Being a furry myself, it’s really just for fun. You create a character and bring it to life just like cosplay. It’s not exactly the fact that you want to be an animal, it’s just that you’re wanting to act out this cool character. Really the fandom is full of extremely creative people who are amazing artists, writers, creaters, etc. Every fandom has a dark side. But that’s really the minority of the fandom. Especially most people won’t touch people at all unless they ask first because fur suits can be delicate/furries are polite and respectful

honestly this changed my perspective on furries, they're actually really funny and nice, they're just like everyone else except having fun in handmade costumes.
The only thing i don't like about the community is how it's full of unnecessary amounts of drama and how problematic it can be, but then again it's not the community itself, it's just the people who are causing it.
