I actually have my own little fan theory about Maggottail! Obviously, he was born with a different name, but being a naughty boy, his leader (I suppose Ripplestar because he sounds like enough of a dick) changed his name to Maggotpaw as a punishment for slacking and bringing crowfood to feed the Clan instead of prey. Obviously, every other apprentice made fun of him and bullied him, which made him even more mean and spiteful as a sort of coping mechanism. The final straw was the fact that the leader didn't change his name during his warrior ceremony, which made him bitterly accept "Maggottail" as his new identity and turn his anger into pure hate towards his Clan, leading to a life of crime. 😏
When you read about Ripplestar tho, he seems like the only leader [Besides Shadowstar] to just be chill and not care lol, he kept to his territory, took anyone in, and just let cats be cats, although it's been awhile, I don't think he would've done that to a cat lol. Maybe you could just make a random leader name? Then you can basically make this leader whatever you want, and it still could be cannon, as we DONT have books on it! You don't have to take what I said into advice tho, cause my opinion wasn't asked, but kinda presented lol. Anyway, think on it-

For that he got struck by a lighting and killed, and although it is not canon, Vicky wrote somewhere that she thinks he might reside in Dark Forest. That's why I thought he might be capable of such cruel punishment.

Redwillow is quite underrated, Breezepelt is labeled as the only darkforest trainee that fought for the darkforest but redwillow did too, leading to his death from blackstar. Also following some of the fan theories in the comment section, I like them all and according to missing kits (which isn’t always accurate) his name was dashpaw of skyClan because of his speed, and as an apprentice his fellow apprentices challenged him to race a fox, the fox bit his tail tip off and it later became infected with maggots, his clanmates teased him and called him ‘maggottail’ but dashpaw was proud of surviving a fox bite and asked his leader to make his warrior name maggottail. (Again I don’t know how accurate this is)
Sounds more like what actually COULD'VE happened, compared to what I saw about Ripplestar being the one giving him that name cause he did something terrible like giving the kits crowfood or something, and that's where his evil ark began, but I honestly don't think Ripplestar would've done that- he was a pretty calm leader-

My warrior cat OC was Tinykit, her father thought he weak and renamed her Maggotkit. In the end, she did the right thing and proved herself during her warrior ceremony, she was offered to return her prefix back to Tiny, but deciding to stay Maggot because her name has a story. Maybe Maggottail is similar? He doesn't sound like he had a very good life...
