One big disadvantage this type of coling units have is that there's just the one hose, meaning that by pushing the (hot) air out, you're creating a low-pressure environment in the room,
and since that's not a sustainable condition, additional air needs to come back in..
The only air that can get in, is, ultimately, that which comes from the outside (through cracks/doors/windows...)
So, after cooling down *a portion* of air in your room, you also get a portion of hot air get in from the outside, cutting the efficiency, I'd say, in half.
A way better solution would have been - aside from a rather expensive split AC unit - a model which utilizes TWO hoses:
it cools "the hot thing inside" with the air from the outside, and then expells the hot air (both times through an individual hose) same as here,
circulating (cooling) just and only the inside air of the room.
There are actually some devices in a similar price bracket with that function "on board" - they might have fewer BTUs, but the severely increased efficiency more than makes up for it.
Another way of doing it - and that's the way I did it - is to manually "mod" the unit to use second hose for the intake.
^Night and day difference: almost no more hot air rushing back in from the outside (no negative pressure created in the room)

This is why the cheap window units actually work better than the portables. They don’t suck air out. , because the condenser is already on the exterior.

just checked out what those cost in the US... damn.. that's really cheap.
I'd have to pay 500+ EUR to get one here, in addition to having a problem afterwards with the installation since our windows don't work the same way -- we just "open" them; no sliding involved.

I've got a single car garage, insulated all but door, no window, window unit is not allowed because of HOA rules. Second problem and one of the biggest drawbacks from recently renting after 20 plus yrs owning....making changes.. Any who.. I've got to make a living so I've got to cool space or rent space.. Which doesn't make financial sense. Any ideas? I liked the small port hole, it was clean and neat, and believe my awesome landlord wouldn't balk at all.. But your point I can't ignore, I understand how the air system works in my home glad you reminded me of the importance..

@@janetwelch5552 If there are no existing vents or other openings you could make to the outside (about 150mm each), there's always the garage door itself.
Same as in this video, your best bet would be a stand alone mobile unit, preferably with a two-hose system from the get go. If you can't get one - or doesn't make sense financially (those can be way too expensive bc of some patents or sheer evilness of the manufacturers) - you can (pretty much) always convert a 1-hose unit to use the 2nd hose for air intake for cooling. To that end, you just take an empty box from your last amazon shipment (or what have you) that fits the bill size-wise, and make the appropriate cut-outs so that it fits on top of or wraps around the openings where the air for cooling gets drawn in. Then you seal everything around it (box to the unit) with some good painter's tape (for easy removal, if needed) and cut out a hole in the biggest side of the cardboard box to fit and attach the hose to it. There are even some connecting pieces (like a collar/funnel) for that available, so you might wannt to just buy one to make the installation easier.
Obv, you'll need another hose of an appropriate lenght. Size and type don't really matter that much (chances are, you won't be able to get the exact same one that came with your unit anyway), as long ad the inner diameter of it isn't smaller than that of the exhaust hose.
Anyway, in case you can't get/make any vents or holes to the outside to work for you, you'll always have the garage door itself.
--- Assuming that in order to keep the cool air inside, you'll keep it closed most of the time anyway, it shouldn't be that big of a deal.
The basic idea here (although there can be many other ways a garage's door closes, in which case you might have to get inventive) is that you get a board (chip, ply, mdf, solid, ..) as long as you garage door (assuming it opens and rolls up upwards) and somewhat taller than the diameter of the hose(s) you're gonna be using.
So you basically place that piece of wood (let's say 3m long 1"x10") as a stopper for your garage door on its way down, and make holes in it big enough to fit/attach both hoses to it. You'll have to move it aside every time you need to move a car in and out (or anything you can't get over the new 10" "step"), but that's the price you pay...
All in all - and I can only give an assumption based on local prices - you are probably in for 2-300€ for the unit and 50-100€ extra for the additional hose and other stuff.
      HTH.

You installed the foam panels backwards. If you don't point the shiny side towards open air it just conducts the heat along with the door completely negating its purpose.

Yup, the advertisement part should be facing the garage door panel.

After insulating my garage door with foam, as you did, I covered it with Reflectix foil bubble pack insulation. It is held on with double stick carpet tape. Not only does it add a bit more insulation it blocks air flow between the door panels, makes the garage door look great, and it reflects light. I have a portable air conditioner with duel ducts. The dual ducts need insulating because the air intake hose heats up with the hot outside air and the exhaust hose heats up with even hotter air. :) In Texas we need shop air conditioning. My paint primer has on its label not to apply it when temperature exceeds 90 degrees, in Texas, during July thru Sept, most of our day is more than 90 degrees and sweat dripping into the paint doesn't make for a good finish.

Thank you. not sure how smart, I bought a table saw when I should have bought garage attic insulation. Now, I'm taking a cool off break.

Yep, my issue as well, Texas heat, plus moving all my supplies into the house yesterday has proven more annoying than I knew it would, how's you garage cooling? Mines a single car, could a small unit be an option? Any info or suggestions would be great.. No window either.

@@janetwelch5552 : My insulating of the garage door has worked well but I moved the portable A/C into my office. What I planned to do was to insulate the walls and ceiling then install a mini-split. Since I may not stay in this house much longer, that plan has been tabled.
I hope your single car garage project works out well for you.

Thanks so much, I'm insulated which is a good thing, looks like doing garage door is pretty basic, I'll google the split you spoke of to see if it's something that would work for me!! It's 🔥 today, no warning this year just straight into 100 + humid sweat box.. I'm AZ girl and TX I believe is a heat you never adjust too.

Nice job on the door. However, the radiant barrier material in the rigid insulation doesn’t work without a 1” air gap and it should be facing the interior. Low emissivity prevents radiation from outside to inside . So if it’s right against the door and facing out, it doesn’t do anything. The foam will help though.

I plan on adding insulation on my garage door eventually currently working on the electrical, after I get the garage door insulated I'll just open up the 3 vents that are in the ceiling of the garage, it's connected to the house Heat/AC

Just be careful with adding insulation to the garage door I put in some foam board awhile back and it through off the balance of my garage and jacked it all up. New torsion springs fixed the problem and the old ones were on their last leg anyway but their tricky to install so if u DIY watch a lot of youtube on how to un-reinstall

I know it’s work shop but curious what you did, if anything, to make the garage door panels just installed have a more appealing look? I use my garage as a bar (Sports, weekly poker, drinks, darts, surround sound, etc...) so what suggestions do you have to make what you installed more appealing to the eye (cheaply) I assume most will say painting but, thought I’d see if there were some unique ideas. Thank you

Ha, funny. I’m Aaron Massey also and just last week had a mini-split AC/Heater installed. Was thinking of putting a portable like yours in the other garage.

I'm seeing differing thoughts relative to the foil face. Have we an HVAC person who cares to weigh in? It is an interesting dilemma.

I have a game room and gym in my 3 car garage. iam wondering if I should get just one of this heaters or a window ac/heater for my fully insulated 3 car garage? If I get just a heater then I have to worry about getting something to cool it in the summer. I just don't know which way will be the way to go, two separate units one for the summer and one for winter or just find a unit that has both in it ac and heating? Garage is about 660sq ft and 8ft ceiling night, fullybinsulated even garage doors. Live in Clovis ca with a climate zone of 9b.

    • @phyreacid

Sometimes those 50 dollar craigslist ac have issues like running low on coolant. This one is portable so Aaron can move it around the shop to where he really needs it. A fixed ac would only cool one spot, and in a somewhat fixed direction.

  • @radioman140
    @radioman140 4 роки тому +1

maybe if you get a free one because you get paid by the manufacturer, but these things are extremely inefficient. You need make up air, just makes no sense. A window or through the wall ac unit is cheaper and much better.
