I really love my Guinness whistle which is made by Walton's. I also bought a Walton's nickel whistle and it sounds good as well. Definitely a good affordable whistle for practice.

Thanks for your additional insight. Based on David's review and the other comments here about it I might just order one for myself to have one of the classic brands back in my collection.

Generation or Clark are better. I have all of them, even the Guinness ^^

I bought a Walton C whistle. It jumps octave much too easily on the low notes and doesn't play an octave higher on the higher notes, unless you blast everyone out of the room. It takes the slightest breath with little sound volume to keep from jumping octave on lower notes. I'm not giving up on it yet. The mouth piece can be remove easily and made tunable by heating it slightly with a hair dryer and pulling it off. I finally added a thumb hole to make the high C much easier to reach. Michael

I've had the regular brass Walton's in D, as well as the Walton's "Guinness" black whistle. The brass one was a considerable improvement on the Generation whistles. It had richer tone and was playable from lowest to highest notes without the notes breaking apart or going scratchy. It's a great starter and practice whistle. Neither one is particularly loud, but they're nice tone and reliable. The "Guinness" model is a thinner metal and painted black, with a white mouthpiece. It's tone was even more attractive to me, more in the direction of a high quality penny whistle, and especially in the higher register. I used it on an album I recorded, especially one song featuring the whistle. Parents and students looking for a starter whistle that will help you learn, and sound good along the way, should try the brass one. The "Guinness" is also a good choice for intermediate and pro users looking for a recording whistle the resonates more in the higher registers clearly, but don't expect it to compete for attention in a live band setting without being at a microphone. Two thumbs up from me, for a starter whistle. Intermediate user's first choice? No, but if you're going for a $70 - $150 main whistle, a cheaper one for portable practice still makes great sense, right!

Thank you for the additional Insight. I really dig David's reviews, obviously why I subscribed, but it's also nice to hear the opinions of other players who have the chops to actually evaluate the whistles.
I had a Waltons 15 years ago, when I was going through my first whistle phase, and it was one of the ones out of 23 I had that I got rid of and I ended up only keeping five that I liked. Actually two that I like and the other three for nostalgic purposes, like the Clarke original. But my actual point is I really am not sure why I got rid of the Waltons, other than I was doing the process of elimination and it just didn't make the cut at that time. But I don't have anything particular bad to say about it.
Unfortunately I'm one of those people, living in Orange County California where there's not a shop with a bunch of whistles one can go in and try, so I really have to rely on the average of other's reviews and mail order for most of my acquisitions. But David has been a pretty good source for some good ideas there.
I got my James Becker and Timothy Potter based on his reviews and I like them very much.
And actually I remain surprised at just how good the Becker whistles are for how they're made and the price. I don't want to overdo it, but I think you really get a lot of bang for your buck with them.
The Potter whistles LOOK to be of a better quality so you EXPECT more out of them and they deliver as advertised. But unless people are just dead set against the whole plastic/PVC conversion thing, I HIGHLY recommend a Becker for a beginner.

@@michaelrs8010 funny thing, based on david's review i also have my eyes on becker's and timothy potter's whistle lol depending on the method of payment i may or may not buy them but i want to have them anyways!

    • @michaelrs8010
      @michaelrs8010 4 роки тому

@@msk-qp6fn I don't think you'll be disappointed with either. I ordered three Backers for the price. One that was a little "off", but nothing that could not happen with any other whistle maker, particularly ones that are handcrafted, no matter the their price point, but the replacement with spot-on.
Again it being what it is, but also, thanks to the particular Craftsman, it being a much better value and quality sound-wise then one would expect for what it is.
And the Potter was as advertised. Takes a little less breath but sounds great to me. I've read reviews by people that say they're put off because he's a person of faith and so won't order from him because of that or won't order again.
I think that's a pretty silly reason myself. As far as I'm concerned he expresses himself low key in that regard and makes a pretty good whistle. So if that's not one's thing they can just peel the sticker off the whistle and know that they have a good quality whistle to play...while on their way to *hell.
      *Yes, I'm just joking. 😄

After seeing your video about the Gene Milligan in Aluminum, I NEED to get it. So I wrote to him, and he said he also had the mouthpiece in Aluminum, so that would be an full Aluminum whistle. I think I will go for that. I'm guessing the fipple would be in Delrin. I have a lot of whistles, but honesty, my Milligan in Blackwood with the smaller, silent mouthpiece is my favorite for sure.

Hey David, thanks for the review. My parents traveled to Ireland and brought home a Waltons whistle for my son which sat on the shelf for a few years. I recently started playing it and I discovered I love tin whistle! However it’s a little squeaky in the upper octave. I’m wondering if you could recommend an upgrade. something under $50 perhaps. I’ve considered the Clarke sweet tone or maybe a Tony Dixon, but I’m not sure which model.

I prefer Toney dixon they never let me down. Best plastix is DX005 and the best aluminium is dx006. They cost a little extra to the others but still under £50 and they never let me down.

At the end of the day it looks like the only really safe and consistent cost effective beginner's whistle is Clarke's. I have to give it to them where credit's due: they're good at what they do and have adapted well to the internet age. It's a shame about the consistency issue because Walton does sound quite nice (in your review and Adrea Corr's performance). As someone who doesn't live where there is a musical store nearby (to my knowledge at least), I have to buy my whistles online so I prefer makers/brands with consistencies at the moment. Honestly, hunting for a good Walton or Generation whistle actually sounds fun, so it's shame that I can't do it.

I checked with Hobgoblin USA and they don't have the Guinness anymore and say they can't order it, but they opined that one of two versions of The Waltons little black whistle is the same design. The only difference being the the mouthpiece being white and a decal on the Guinness.
Anyone have any clue about that as to which is the equivalent to the Guinness in their current offerings?

There is a buzz on the sound when you start playing the whistles, its not there when you are talking, so I presume the buzz comes from post processing the sound of the whistle. It's a low frequency buzz, otherwise it's a great video.
