Putting the edit at the top because I want to say that I agree so much with every point made in this review (with the exception of the below.) Another edit because the quests don’t just tie together practically, they tie together thematically. The writing is just so good in this game. 15:26 This right here I have to disagree with. They do explain the lore. They just do it organically so it isn’t noticeable. You get an idea of who the gods are and how active they are by meeting their followers or finding prayers strewn about. The way people respond to your character lets you know subtly how your character’s people are perceived - what prejudices people may have against you and what not. My first run I was a female drow and I didn’t even realize until I played as a wood elf that the “good” characters were suspicious of the drow and all it took was a dirty look to make the “bad” characters shake in their boots a little. I was denied intimidation checks because I was already too intimidating. Turns out that Drow are a matriarchy and they are famous for their brutality. Everyone, good and bad, expected me to be a step away from murdering them. Your dialogue options can also signal prejudices that are common. You can assume that the Tieflings are devils because they look like devils and were briefly dragged into the Hells. You can talk to the Tieflings and find out why they are refugees. Also every one of your companions gives you a perspective on the world. You can garner information from them about class divides, political structures, and a whole bunch about religion. I think you get a lot of information about the culture, customs, history, religion etc organically just by being in the world. Reading the books also fills in lore but not with codex entries like you would get from other CRPGs. You can read interviews with people that survived the Bhaal spawn. You can read prayers that define different gods and their roles in the lives of common people. You can read treatises on magic and you can learn a ton about the Gith by sorting through the books in a Wizard’s tower.
It's got the best parts of Mass Effect, Skyrim,Fallout NV, Dragon Age and Diablo....It's got a uncanny sense of freedom
That's a great point of comparison! They found a way to blend it all together perfectly
Yeah, you tell 'em, bro! ☝️
