  • Stellantis, a notable player in the commercial vehicle sector, is making strides in expanding its production of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. This initiative includes starting in-house production for both mid-sized and large vans. The production sites are located in Hordain, France, and Gliwice, Poland. This expansion is significant for Stellantis, as it strengthens their position as a leading company in Europe for zero-emission commercial vehicles.
In October 2023, Stellantis introduced a major overhaul of its van lineup. This was a part of their Pro One strategy, focusing on their Commercial Vehicles Business. The company is utilizing a range of technologies including electrified propulsion, safety enhancements, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), and improved connectivity. These technologies aim to offer a better driving experience and serve as a dependable option for business owners. Stellantis Pro One's manufacturing capabilities are well-supported by facilities in Mangualde (Portugal), Vigo (Spain), Ellesmere Port (UK), Hordain (France), Luton (UK), Atessa (Italy), and Gliwice (Poland).
The fuel cell versions of Stellantis' commercial vans are designed for intense usage. They are built upon the zero-emission battery electric vehicle (BEV) technology already used in these vans. However, they offer the additional benefits of quick refueling times and no reduction in payload capacity. The mid-size vans boast a second-generation fuel cell system, offering an impressive range of up to 400 km and a refueling time of under four minutes. The larger vans, equipped with fuel cell technology, can achieve ranges of up to 500 km with refueling times of about five minutes.
Stellantis plans to produce 10 hydrogen fuel cell versions of their mid-sized and large vans in-house. These include models from Citroën, Fiat Professional, Vauxhall, Opel, and Peugeot.
Hydrogen fuel cell technology is a critical component of Stellantis' approach to zero-emission propulsion. The company has been a pioneer in this area, becoming the first manufacturer to market such vehicles in 2021. In 2023, Stellantis enhanced its commitment to hydrogen technology by acquiring a one-third share in Symbio, a leading hydrogen technology firm with operations in Europe and the United States.
