    Raikkonen at his peak was faster than Alonso or Lewis, frankly. As Marc says.
    I find it unfair that Marc says Kimi didn't "apply himself". Kimi lost 2 titles at McLaren not because of his approach but because the car kept breaking down. Constantly.

    36:25 There we go, Marc Priestly settles it finally - Kimi Raikkonen was a phenomenon like no other! 🔥 I swear I have yet to see anybody race the way he does. I think he was even more technically gifted than Senna. In those Mclaren years, it truly was something else. I've spent years battling Alonso and Lewis fans - and I keep on saying the same thing - respect to Lewis and Fernando, they're epic racers, but they were never as naturally sublime as Kimi in his prime. If Kimi had anywhere near their work ethic, he would've been the all time GOAT of F1. You can see it from what Marc says, Kimi was partying harder than he was working at racing lol. But I guess if he had the same work ethic, then he would not have been Kimi 😂

    About Lewis been more interested in car than Kimi:
    Well there is that little bit of info omitted that Kimi was mechanic before/while he was driver (in lower classes). So he didn't need to ask, he knew what stuff in the car did and could have fixed many problems in car himself 😃

    • @magicofshootingstar
      @magicofshootingstar Рік тому +2

      I know F1 cars are specialised but the parts do same things as they do in road cars. Though Kimi didn't only work on road cars and motorcycles etc. He specifically worked on his and other people carting (and lower formula?) cars to pay for his carting. If I remember right, he never let anyone else work on his carburetor for example (his brother did most of his mechanic work which he didn't do himself). And yes, I do understand carts are miles away from F1 cars still 🙂 I more tried to say that he had a lot better understanding of the cars than most when they came in the sport.

    Mate, just to add my thoughts to the Ferrari conversation: I think Jean Todts and Ross Brawn built a strong winning team especially around Michael Schumacher. Looking back at the season reviews (that are free on YT), I noticed how Michael Shumacher was treated as a golden child with essentially the whole Ferrari team and a lot of the f1 paddock for Michael to win. When Alonso de-throned Michael, that's around the same time Jean and Brawn left Ferrari. Shortly afterwards, Michael retired. Ferrari had a power vacuum and didn't know who they were without Jean Todt's, Ross Brawn, and Michael. They went through many team principals who tried to create a winning culture. IMHO, Maurizio Arrivabene was their best team principal who had the capability to get them back on track, but they sacked him too.

    I remember as a kid in 2000's I really hate Fernando Alonso his cocky attitude plus he always winning, but Kimi Raikonen was the fastest driver in the grid much but his car was always breaking down. Yeah I really remember that era. The Hamilton debut was very very fantastic is like fairy tales coming true. He was an amazing rookie, nobody anticipate how good the Lewis was behind the wheel. And everybody wanted him to be WDC. I remember also Fernando Alonso mechanic screw up the pitstop two time, in Turkey and Shanghai I believe.

    There is a story about Jody Scheckter and Ayrton Senna testing for Williams...
    Question asked was something like "What revs did you pull down the main straight?"
    Scheckter: "I just drive the car ... how do you expect me to know?"
    Ayrton: "About 17000* in 5th then..." and a long explanation of every gear change and revs throughout the complete lap.
    I bet at least Lewis and Max would answer like Ayrton ... it would be interesting which category others would fall into?
    Could any (ex)mechanics categorise the current drivers??
    I would imagine all of the drivers have an insane level of driving ability ... some are perhaps a step beyond and also have the analytical ability shown by Ayrton.
    Alonso would be interesting ... is his driving absolutely natural ability or is he a thinker? ... and Kimi perhaps wasn't interested in the car but still thought about the details of how he drove?
    I read somewhere that Alain Prost ("The Professor") would brake hard right up to the apex which made him faster than others that braked straight then powered through the corner. (Like the insane MotoGP riders that do 'stoppies' braking to the apex ie the rear wheel is off the ground as they brake and turn!)
    * I remember 7000 in 5th but that sounds too low ... even in those days of lower revs and fewer gears!
