What do you think the penalty should be if people fake a mayday call? 🤔

I would think they would have thought of bringing an extra tank of gas with them or making sure to check that everything worked before they left. I believe one of the guys mentioned the gas meter was broken.

Looked like the gas gauge was working once gas was poured into the tank. I worry that if the guy that owns/operates the boat doesn't get some education in boating then someone could die. I mean..... they had a friend with a boat that knew the situation but just went on their fishing trip and said they'd look for them when they were finished for the day. That's just frightening

According to the guy, the "oil gauge" was broken.

It’s fine if they waste your time though, I’d say thousand dollar fine should re-zero his priorities.

Can't they be charged for false mayday call? Are they charged for the fuel? The guy seems to be totally ignorant of operating a boat

It's hard to say since I don't own a boat or go deep sea fishing with anyone. I also don't live in Australia or New Zealand, so I'm sure the laws are different there than where I live. Maybe they thought it was necessary and it was just a case of misunderstanding the law? I'm not trying to defend them in case they did something wrong, of course. I'm not trying to jump to conclusions because I don't know the law there.

@@mauramahon7685 a very reasonable comment. I may have a bias from living on the coast.

Where I live in Australia (Qld), you totally get charged for callouts, unless you are Coastguard/Volunteer Marine Rescue members. Which at around $100 a year is entirely worth it.
Our boat has required a tow twice due to engine failure. A weird mechanical fault. My partner maintains that thing all the time and it gets serviced as required. Shouldn't happen again now that it was properly fixed.

I think that every mature citizen should understand simple rules and safety procedures. These fishermen should be charged for calling a false mayday, as well as for the fuel. Wasting emergency services is cheaper than calling for marine services. They have sufficient knowledge of how to call mayday. The other boat should be charged for abandoning a boat in crisis! I truly believe that these men knew what they were doing at least in the ways to save money! Coast guard were taken advantage of!🇨🇦
