5 Words That Will Improve Your Ability to Receive Feedback - Leadership Development Tips
What normally happens inside of you when some says: “I have some feedback for you?” Do you freeze up and prepare to hear something bad?
If you’re like most of us, you’re immediate reaction is to go into DEFENSIVE MODE.
In this video, I’m sharing how you can HEAR and MORE EFFECTIVELY USE THE FEEDBACK that you get.
As I said, if you’re like most of us then you’re immediate reaction is to defend.
As you can imagine, when you’re in DEFENSIVE MODE 2 things happen:
1. You’re not able to HEAR what they have to say because you’re protecting yourself
2. You’re more likely to SHUT THE PERSON DOWN
In this video, I want to teach you a VERY SIMPLE leadership technique of what to say when someone is providing you feedback.
These 5 words will set you up to RECEIVE and USE the feedback you hear.
ALX Students. Am here
I thought this was a more polite alternative to my simple "thanks for the feedback" that I have been utilizing. Usually, I need time to process said feedback, or I'll ask for measurable instances to validate, so I am able to figure out how to best improve. However, "tell me more" allows is more polite and welcoming. I truly enjoyed this bit. Thank you!
I am a student in an online environment. Watching this video was part of an assignment and I'm really glad it was. I have going through transitions in my life where I was not open to feedback from anyone about anything, then where feedback was all I was craving. I guess I'm still in that mode because I continuously look for it. Not in a sense that I'm insecure in the things I do, but I haven't been the first person at anything yet, so there has always been people to do it better. Thank you for the advice, because I would be lying if I said I was always open to feedback.
A very simple concept that allows you to listen first instead of being ready to speak.
A friend told me this formula a while ago. Now I know where he got it. This is a great way to stop criticism in its tracks.
Thank you Dr John and pls tell us more of such kind and lovely advice, from ALX.
Such a simple practice that builds connection and trust. Thank you!
I'm going to utilize this technique today. I have a feedback meeting with my upper leadership, in regards to a interview I attended for a position I wasn't selected for and I didn't want my response to be "but". So thank you for this and I will tell other's about this link.
Feedback is a gift - it’s a foundational element of Disney’s culture focused on continuous improvement.
I appreciate this video! What a valuable phrase! I had learned from Sam Horn in her book, Tongue Fu, about avoiding the word but, and you explained it beautifully here! I look forward to being a new subscriber on your channel. Have a great day!
"Thank you. Tell me more." Such sound advice! This was a really great video with efficient tips for feedback (especially ones that are cohesive and open-minded) for everyone to use, not just now, but in our daily lives (granted we encounter some form of communication every day).
Excellent way of managing feedback given to us... "Thank you, tell me more". Very powerful combination...
thank you Dr Izzo, for sharing this wonderful technique.
Thank you, tell me more.
Simple yet extremely powerful.
Thank you Dr. Izzo, very useful info.
I am so glad I got to watch your video today, I look forward to incorporating this method in my life. Thanks John. Stay safe.
Excellent ! feedback from others is an opportunity to succeed and look back reflect what I could do better next time, accepting and leveraging the "breakfast for champions"
Thank you. Your lesson is reflective of the heavenly Father's Word which frequently stresses the importance of actually loving and welcoming correction. This truth is especially found throughout Proverbs.
Thank you. This is the best, brief and to the point.
This is a really good video to learn from ! Thank you for sharing it! I will apply this knowledge from now on every time I receive a feedback! (I use to put myself in a defensive way, bu now I know that I don’t have to, instead! I should be more open...) Again thank you very much for this...bless
Loved this, short to the point and very useful Thank You, Tell me more
Thank you for sharing this video. I will practice the thank you tell me more technique.
I really enjoyed this video. I am currently in graduate school and this video was a requirement to watch for an assignment
This video was very in depth and it made me really understand how to accept feedback . It will be helpful in my classes
Traveling for holidays with my family later today - looking forward to the many opportunities I'll have to practice the driving example!
Very good and straight to the point.
Good advice thank you, will use in my next conversations
Thank you! Useful tips (y)
Thank you! Great video and tips :)
Thank you for your message
So simple, yet so difficult to do. But as always in life, practice makes perfect.
i needed to hear this, now i know how to properly handle feedback from teammates
I feel like this is missing the key parts. Feedback goes in to a few categories, let's say good, I can work on this, simply untrue and then a perception.
Surely perceptions, if they are wrong, need addressing.
Clear inaccuracies need correcting.
I think this is where we need advice.
On a cohort of 15 I came top 3 in my first 3 exams. I got feedback from the course lead to say I was struggling academically. I did the, tell me more... But surely the meaningful part was where I pointed out I came top 3 in the last 3 exams and the course lead backtracked. I don't know where he got that point of view from but it was simply wrong. If I left him with that point of view that could be spread, Muz is a guy who struggles academically and in a work environment perception is at times more important than reality.
I think I'd like some advice on how we, as a team (feedback receiver and giver) work together to seperate fact from fiction and rectify both with information and action.
this was great advice!! thank you for sharing this with me ; )
Thanks🙏
Awesome - to the point video. The Civil Air Patrol is using your video this month in our Character Development program for our cadets on giving and receiving feedback.
This is an awesome lesson. Thank you!
A fabulous video. Thank you and tell us more 🙂
thank you
Thank you for this video. I am really inspired
That was done perfectly.
Thank you. that was really useful.
One additional angle: giving feedback (especially when it's negative/something needs improvement) can be difficult for many people, so they are going out on a limb to give it to you. So if you react defensively, that hampers both sides.
Of course, this is different than required feedback/evaluations from supervisors etc., but still, they may not relish "being mean". So, being open and forthright about what can be changed is good for everyone.
That was enlightening. Thank you, tell me more!
Thank you tell me more, I will start using that more
Best explanation, don't mind me just improving my life and enjoying the now!
Great tips, but wouldn't the person assume you are being hostile, even if your mindset is really being grateful? I mean, if I ask, ¨tell me more¨, or ¨give me some specs¨, they may assume I'm challenging them, and I may even make obvious some errors in their feedback lol, idk just a thought
Really good stuff, using in my work readiness classes for individuals with special needs.
Glad it was helpful to you!
Thank you...
Thank you.
Thank you
I am going to try it asap
❤wonderful
Thank you for a well presented and well structured presentation. I am currently reeling from some angrily delivered feedback I received from an old friend. It’s been a week, and still reeling from the angry and generalizing manner in which the feedback was given. So what I find entirely missing in your presentation is the emotional component of receiving feedback. Receiving feedback is not simply a cognitive event: it is a relational event. You obviously have the intelligence to deal strongly with this factor. It would be helpful if you did. And that’s MY feedback for you! :-)
i guess im asking the wrong place but does someone know a method to get back into an instagram account??
I stupidly lost the password. I appreciate any help you can offer me
Great
Well said
Thank you please tell me more
To be honest, money is a great motivator for holding your tongue. I do not think for one minute that celebrities are clamping it without gain.
its good
what if the feed back is in conflict with some ones else feed back in the same area
Thankyou but... I don't really like but I like it... 👍👍 How was that ?
It's not easy oooo. God help me
Too long, I think you repeat too much.
