Don't forget Hip Hop's influence in movies. Several rappers and singers have gone on to become successful actors and actresses.
Hip hop has been the most popular sound to come out of America for like the last 20 yrs. Its been the most popular genre world wide for a while now. America just stopped snubbing it.

Hip Hop and Rap moved to the forefront when radio formats lost their huge influence because pop stations routinely underplayed hh and rap to give pop, rock, and country unfair edges. The whole reason for airplay numbers figuring into Billboard's charts was relying on pop and rock stations to push non-hh and non-rap music. In pure sales, hh and rap would have charted significantly higher on the Hot 100 and Top 200 charts. Radio no longer leads music consumption, however. The internet and streaming undercut that dynamic. Hip hop and rap have been formidable for a long time. The truth is only recently emerging. The same with r&b and soul music in years past. And we won't speak of hyper-inflated record sales and RIAA certifications that depended not on units sold but instead on units shipped.
Yup and let's not forget the 90s R&B was original pop. And it was called pop until they basically start white washing the sound and calling anything with rifs and runs and black people r&b instead. They just add a bunch other instruments that you wouldn't usually hear in hip hop to camouflage the take over. But even pop artists can't help but to sound like r&b.

Or the fact that most people weren't big hip hop fans and prefered other genres of music. Hip Hop is basically music for non music fans.

Its at the top because the polticians that run the whole music industry wanted it to. Music is now used for a political agenda. The same people that own todays "country music" also own HipHop and R&B as well. IMO The charts and record labels all controlled. Go look up who owns B E T and you will start to get an idea.
