That John Lee Hooker story is one of the best damn stories I have EVER heard in reference to the lectric gitar.
Probably one of my favourite guitarists ever. Him and Tom Verlaine were musically made for each other.
Lloyd's playing,on every record he has ever appeared on,is nothing short of EPIC.
For sure best story I ever heard. Keep well Mr. Lloyd. Thanks for sharing.
His gold hard fingers and insistent Fendery edge made life better, richer...and they continue to do so. Thank you, Richard Lloyd - we owe you.
Love his work with Matthew Sweet, as well as with Television
RIP, Robert Quine
Lloyd really is one of the greats, John Lee was spot on
I don't think Richard is all that crazy; he's just coming from a different point of view. If anything, he is probably a lot more sane than most conventional straight arrow types who live like every other straight arrow that digs their nine to five trench and does whatever their television tells them to do. Richard explains it in many of his interviews: It's all about experience. The man has lived the sort of life all of us wished we could have lived, and the reason his worldview and his demeanor might seem strange is that he's the end result of living that life. I like his interviews. I really like his approach to playing guitar and the truly esoteric things he says about music. He's an interesting guy who has lived an interesting life, and rather than living that life in a puddle of excess and egotism, he chose the thoughtful and introspective route out of himself, out of the go hum world and into something more rich and strange and true than what most of us could even imagine. He's a student of Gurdjieff for goodness sake--that isn't like bring a member of the Elks Club.
That bit he told about going in the bathroom with the guitar and having time pass without even realizing it is probably recognizable to any artist or musician working on their craft. It reminds me of a thing I read in a comic strip years ago ('For Better or For Worse' by Lynn Johnston)...
The grandfather had given his granddaughter a harmonica, and the mother asked him how she would be able to tell if her daughter had any talent for an instrument. He said, "When you have to yell at them to stop playing instead of yelling at them to practice", or something to that effect. I always thought that was a great line.
I had the Good Fortune of recording a couple of albums with Richard in fact he helped me get sober good dude I hope you're doing well Richard it's been a long time
"In the meantime I'll practice."
Lol!!
Richard Lloyd is genius. I just bought his book and DVD The Alchemical Guitarist, Vol. 1. Can't wait.
Wow that was amazing! Great ending. Thanks for posting a great video!!
the world will turn....VIZUALIZATION in it's most fully flowered form.
can you imagine having Richard over for dinner? what an fn character. i would love to ask him how he feels about Richard Hell. Just finished Hell's book and i do not think there is any love lost between Hell and the rest of the original Television lineup.
Fascinating story.
yessssss!
Wooooooo!
Ahhhhhhhh...
Wow, it must be cold out there in outer space
I saw Television in the mid 2000s, stood pretty close to the stage, and I would never recognise this guy as being Richard Lloyd
horsedoctorman And back in the mid 2000s you probably would not have recognized him as the Richard Lloyd from Television's heyday in the 70's, when he was model-level gorgeous.
Right? Right now he kind of looks like his younger self again. Maybe he got leaner
Gosh that Luke Doucet is quite a looker.
he he! mad as a box of frogs!
I AGREE BUD
THE GODS MAY GET DRUNK ALSO
I think he's not drunk, he had some serious illness years ago. But indeed, he's a GOD.and VERY funny.
antwaang He suffers from bipolar disorder from what I've read, probably is on some serious meds.
Messiah complex?
I get misty eyes...
Poor Richard
Until it got to the John lee hooker story Richard was sounding a biiiiiit of a crack head (possibly due to all the shock therapy) but we love him all the same
It's unfortunate how insane he's become.
drugs took a toll on richard... he spins some wild tales.
stay away from 53rd and 3rd man
what a shame, and poor figure. is he drunk, or doped (or both)?
nice a guy, but certainly not a poet, he sounds like he has been living too far from New York for too long
his personality and Tom's were perfect; I hope they could get back together again...
