Very few guitar nerds have respect for Richard Lloyd, but homeboy played (sick as hell) lead guitar in Television, one of the original and best NYC Punk bands. He's been killing it since 1974 or so, and he obviously loves the guitar and knows a ton about it. So, that being said, RESPECT, listen, and learn.
He's one of the most influential players of the last 30 years.
There is so much scope and depth in the "Alchemical Guitarist", parts 1 &2, that it will take you years to appreciate and master. Well worth the effort.

His solo record Alchemy has become one of my most played albums.
Its really a great record and has some great stuff in it.
It Also helped me identify what he was playing in the television records.
Blue and grey has a days feel to it fir example.
I went in a different musical direction, but Richard and his playing with Matthew Sweet was one of the most profound influences on me (and he continues to be). It was a radical departure from the pattern/box-based stuff which so many guitarists stuck in, and a singular voice. And that's the thing - have something to say, say it well, sound like yourself and draw the listener in . Listening to him now, three decades on, still unveils new things. Eternal thanks, Richard Lloyd.

Richard Lloyd is one of the best things on one of the greatest rock albums of all time, Television's 'Marquee Moon'. Those who would diss him should bear that in mind.
A fantastic and different way to understand intervals, with some relevant history.

Who the hell are all these people claiming that he's high and quack? I am a musician play classical, blues, jazz. There is nothing crazy about what he's saying, and I think he does a great job of explaining this foundation of theory.

"...we get more and more troubled..." "...and he demands resolution..." My God, I have never heard music theory discribed so darkly. I love it!

+dangerousrhythm77 sory for being late, one time me and my family went and spent a whole week in the hamptons with him and my aunt, he was one crazy dude, he would go outside and stair into the sun for like 30 minutes at a time, he called it sun gazing and he taught me and my sister how to do it my parents didnt like it though. he was really cool and nice, at the time i had no idea who he really was and my parents just told me he was in a band. he also told me this one story about how he used to do drugs with peter frampton which was cool. recently he got maried to my aunt and tyna and another member of the talking heads where there. also from what he said television screwed him over for the royalties to marquee moon. over all he was a pretty chill dude

People! For the love of Pete, RELAX! He's not drunk, high or anything like that. I know lot's of musicians, and the more talented, the quirkier they are. People at this level of musical theory are operating on a different plane than the rest of us. It's just the way it is. When he says " well, now we're deep into it..." or something like that, it's his way of expressing how that note interacts musically with the rest. Brilliance. Sheer brilliance.

I'm two minutes in and just LOVING hearing him talk. To be fair, I'm into all this esoteric "woohoo." Pythagoras, pentagrams, 4ths and 5ths... Growing up they tell you that all you have to do is practice and you will be good. Which is true, but music also has GEOMETRY. Which is something NO SCHOOLS teach and it's a damn shame. Can't wait to hear him play!
Read his book, "All Things Are Combustible", you'll love it!

This guy is very special.
It takes a lot of dedication. You're not going to be able to sight-read quickly, but when you can it's very rewarding just like anything else on the guitar.
With his method. Its a good feeling to be able to go from. 1st fret 6th string to 24th fret 1st string without hesitation. He's like a stepfad. Not my dad but taught life RL. Rules!!!!
All right Richard !! and yours is an excellent teaching on the origins of musical harmony. However Pythagoras had his famous school in Italy, but not in the island of Sicily, but in Kroton that is in Calabria, where it all began ..... great

Richard Lloyd and Tom Verlaine are a big reason that Wilco sounds the way they do. If you listen to the song "Marquee Moon" and "Friction," and then listen to Wilco's "Spider's (Kidsmoke)" and "Bull Black Nova," you'll see a definite connection.
"Impossible Germany" aswell! The latter half of that song is such a sublime tribute to Television, love Nels Cline's playing on that one
You have to know the physics involved in music and the instrument you want to play and master.
This lesson is a perfect introduction.

when you realize this guy was basically taught by Hendrix, once removed, your brain explodes realizing that Hendrix was a HUGE influence on the NYC proto punk scene.
WTF are you talking about? He had a few second hand lessons from Jimi. He learned a couple of hammer-on's for crying out loud.

Richard Lloyd definitely is in a league of his own imho. Everybody knows about Television, but check out what Lloyd accomplishes on the albums and live performances he did with/for Matthew Sweet in the 9t's. He absolutely takes the Matthew Sweet-songbook to a higher level with his great style of guitarplaying.. :-)
Meet John Doe is another prize waiting to rediscovered again and again. Richard's playing and John's singing and songwriting is a double whammy not to be missed.
Lloyd with Robert Quine.. Matthew is lucky to have them on his records..

Anybody who doubts Richard Lloyd's chops should listen to "Field of Fire" from his solo album of the same name. Lloyd is a monster guitarist, his work with Tom Verlaine and Television seminal. Listen to his solo on "Days" (Television: Adventure). Just a perfect bit of playing.

This was Great esp "the devil's tritone" (opening riff of Black Sabbath of course)
while Tom Verlaine's vocals are somewhat outdated, Richard Lloyd's riffs are truly timeless and what makes Marquee Moon incredible. Such an underrated player.
Im partial to most vocals on most tracks except torn curtain, can't stand the last song on marquee moon

What you feel is still based on hundreds of years of musical development. A pop song is as international as a chemical formula.
