Only 554 views for such a breathtaking piece of art. You Sir, deserve way more glory for all your hard work. One of the most underrated channel in the entire universe
A smith's desire to self express creatively is exactly historical - especially back in an era where all armour was an individual's personal kit. made to order. So-called purists unrealistically rely on surviving pottery, sculpture, and reliefs which is limited and narrow.
@@ThakIronworks I mean plenty of real life examples exist and they basically all look the same, judging by era with very minor differences that is. The Greeks seemed to have a very uniform way of approaching art over many hundreds of years. But there's nothing wrong with creating historically inspired armour. Seeing the finished set before watching these, it struck me as somewhat of a more historical leaning fantastical product. That doesn't remove value though (especially personal), and I'm happy to see something that leans more towards the source material than something like the 300 set (which I think you brought up in the helmet video). Btw, I took you for a misfits/Danzig fan straight away. Not sure why, but hell yeah, good taste
The helmet might not be "realistic" but it sure is incredibly faithful. I greatly respect how you even acknowledged you used the shorter front of earlier helmets with the ear holes of the later ones. Honestly, that recognition alone is all I believe necessary to grant you kudos for knowing your stuff, even not calling this a Roman helmet puts you leagues above most people 😂 Don't let the purists throw you off, you're making what you want and doing in it a very considered way which is something that should be greatly praised and appreciated, not belittled
I absolutely love this helmet! I am one of those guys into historical accuracy but I am also a sculptor. Historical accuracy is overated because there were probably so many variations of the Corinthian Helmet. I am sure that the armor smiths of Ancient Greece weren't hung up on accuracy as much as following the guidelines of what is an accurate "Corinthian Helmet." I am sure that these helmets were made custom and then decorated to suit the needs of the client. This helmet style was not only popular in Greece. It was also extremely popular in ancient Italy. But this is a beautiful work of art. I love how you approached the crest and how you incorporated the bull of Minos into the design. By the way, they still jump over bulls in Spain! I am sure an ancient Spartan would have been proud to wear that beautiful helmet. That opening for the ears made a world of difference to hearing commands. That is a perfect example of how there was innovation that resulted from facing adversity in actual battle conditions that caused these helmets to evolve into newer styles of helmet like the "Attic helmet." There would not have been other styles of Greek Helmets if the armor makers of antiquity got hung up on accuracy. If they did, their competitors would have been more than happy to oblige to their clients needs! I have thoroughly enjoyed watching you make this incredibly beautiful helmet. Once I started watching, the world stopped and I was mesmerized watching you work your magic! I can't thank you enough. = )
I am loving this Greek helmet body armour series. Love your work. Thank you for letting us into seeing your talent. I subbed a few vids back. PS Love the "...thick black cork..." comment. Love the humour.
Very beautiful work! I love bronze armour. Of course the Iliad describes the armour they wore as polished and shining in the sunlight. Since you do not have hoards of slaves and captives to do the polishing I guess you have to make due. You are an extremely skilled gentleman and being Greek I have a particular partiality for this armour style although I personally coudn't fight my way out of a wet paper bag.
Amazing work! You, sir, are a legend. I prefer the more traditional historic style of crest, but I do appreciate seeing your own take on it. It's cool because there's no other helmet with the unique "Thak Ironworks" flavor like yours!
Man the skills!! Very much appreciate you sharing this with us. Such an inspiration to many especially combined the " typical " blacksmith skills with the reposse and finish work...wholey purple pillars of handy work!!!👋🏻👋🏻👋🏻👋🏻👋🏻👋🏻 🙏 Blessed day and well wishes Sir Crawford out ⚒️🧙♂️
Its just awe inspiring, the shapes.. just art. Excellent job. I would have liked to see you put it on, perhaps when the project is completed and all the pieces are assembled.
Thak Ironworks, The Minoan culture actually had a lot of influence on the Greeks. The Minoans were very fond of horned bulls and it translated to the Greeks myth of the Minotaur and the maze.
Amazing result, it looks outstanding. I wonder what the Greek artificers used as hairspray? Also I'm not sure they were aware of thick black caulk. I'm sure they would have loved it if they had it, but so long ago, Home Depot wasn't even thought of yet. ;-)
Its really good and even better from the past time.I would love to see you doing one historically based which wouldn't be so huge.No matter what keep up the hard work. You inspire and lot of young people. If you need info for the historically perfect and smaller one i would like to jelp you.
I'm trying to make leather armor, my helmet is done and I was really wanting to put a crest on it. I'm not sure how to go about it, starting the chest and back pieces today, gonna carve some dragons on it. But looking at the helmet it would be awsome , kinda difficult now that it's all together....
Amazing video! Only one suggestion for video editing - would add background music for when you're doing the busy work. Loved the advertising for Got2b, hopefully, they'll come through with an endorsement. Keep up the wonderful work!
Sir your workmanship is amazing! I do some knife and sword making and really want to do some armor. Something simple to begin with like a gauntlet, would you have any non frustrating way's to begin lol!
Hi Rob I'm not really into history stuff , so my opinion is based only on what I see . And mate I love what I am seeing , the work of a true Master of the trade. (:
Incredible work, as always. Almost thought the hoplite suit was a forgotten project, at this point. Seems like the crest sits a bit too far at the back of the helmet, in my opinion. About 2-3 inches longer towards the forehead would have been more accurate and aesthetic. As in all things, 2 inches do make a difference. Still incredible craftsmanship. Subscribed and looking forward for more Ancient armor builds !
I agree on the historically accurate but disagree on aesthetic .....but I guess that is subjective. The backplate video is being edited now and should be out in a week or two...hope you watch and comment
@@ThakIronworks indeed, your're the one wearing it, in the end anyways ;) That's cool ! Will watch it for sure. Your channel really needs a push by that youtube algorithm. No clickbait, no bullshit, no dubstep or "insert generic female modern folk music made by a man with a guitar and a high pitched voice". Just a good ol and dirty manly man with a hammer creating things.
The bull is sacred throughout the Greek ( Hellenic world) even today is in military use as symbol in Epirus. The difference is , the pattern you use is pre dark ages n the helmet after .. different periods
Purist here. As long as you're not claiming it's historically accurate (which you say right at the beginning that you're not), I don't see the problem. We have the examples we have, and there's not much more we can say. Taking inspiration from history to make your own work of wearable art is a time-honored tradition, and anyone that has a problem with that is probably not a very pleasant person to be around in the first place. We're pretty sure Achilles' Mycenaean-era armor didn't look like how the Classical Greeks depicted it on their pottery, but that wasn't the point; the point was to draw from their history (or myth, but then the two were hard to separate back then) and make good art. I think they'd enjoy your work. Also, anyone who can look me in the eye and say some rich Theban landowner wouldn't absolutely salivate over this helmet is kidding both me and themselves.
I was just imagining....during the time of the Corinthian era...how they produce 100.000 pieces of helmet and body armour and legs armour for the soldiers ?
If the Greek Geeks are unhappy with the 'bling' adorning your bronze kip then they ought to show us how it's done. In the meantime I watch with great vigor.
In quel tempo che non esisteva la corrente e tantomeno la saldatrice come facevano a tenere i pezzi ben saldati ? così è troppo facile costruiscilo come facevano in quel tempo allora potrai dire con orgoglio cazzo l ho fatto io
Man bronze is beautiful
Absolutely
The best hairspray commercial ever.
excellent use of that thicc black horse caulk.
Minoan Culture is 100% Greek-just so you know-tell a Cretan he is not Greek and you risk your life. You are truly gifted, and inspiring!
Thanks brother

When i see someone make a semi historical thing i make a backstory in my head to help me not get upset

i agree.....only a thin slice of examples have survived

Really love your channel!! Loving this Hoplite series
It already looked complete without the crest but now it looks even better
I just recently finished a bronze helmet based more off of the 300 style. Very simple but i like it. Wearing it now haha.
Beautiful helmet!! Well done!!

Glad you didn't have to wait that long ;)
the overall shape has phrygian overtones but i think this is a very achilles of troy esque helmet
I was looking to make the horse hair crests for my own helmet... I guess it comes back to the old faithful Got to be glue hairspray

Amazing craftsmanship! Beautiful piece. Do you have plans for the inside, to make it easier and more comfortable to wear?
yes i will get it padded to fit my head
Amazing!!! 🛡️⚔️👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Just 30 hours for that helmet (and another 30 hours for the crest)? Nice job, especially for a first try!
Why nobody tries these on? I want to know how they fit for a costume.
That is gorgeous, do you sell them???
Email me at info@thak.ca for pricing inquiries (yes we do)

I have to ask. Do you own any band T-shirts that aren't complete bangers?
no.....all total fucking bangers
Looks (somehow) similar to the thespian-corinthian helmets
It's my toy I can play with it as I want 🤣🤣👍

Greek yogurt, how appropriate.
