Exactly! This era of lifetime was BONKERS. They didn't pull their punches, all the stuff was basically true crime and ripped-from-the-headlines type stuff. I was like 9 - 12 years old watching this stuff and the LMN of today could NEVER.

The actual story is why more messed up. His friend knew that Bobby was going to kill her that night because they planned it together. Where they killed her was actually very close to the school and in a body of water in the woods. After Bobby killed her his friend helped him put her body in the water with the weights that they brought with them. It's incredibly disturbing. They had us watch this in health class in middle school so that students understood consent, the signs of an abusive relationship, and the signs of a victim crying out for help.

i think what makes this movie so, so jarring is up until this point, the main characters lived. they survived, there was a happy/satisfying ending. so going into it, even if it doesn't make sense, you're expecting her to be found, to be reunited with her mom and best friend and survive. even if it doesn't make sense, you hold onto that. especially at the time this movie came out. but they went the realistic route, the true story route, showing the devestating reality for many women and young girls. and i think that's what makes it so jarring. so many movies didn't, and still don't, go that far. especially with how washed out everything seems to be today. movies are surface level and tend to end on a lesson but still a happy ending. it's all wrapped up neat with a bow. so seeing a movie that goes the other way, it leaves you with this gut-punched feeling. and i think that's so important to the message of this film and why it remains so good.

Lifetime Movies used to do a theme thing, don't know if they still do. So movie after movie of women getting murdered by their significant others. Then the next day there would be movie after movie of stalker movies. The next day the theme would be their children being threatened. So just having the channel on in the background you'd lose track of where one movie ended and another began.

I was 13 when this movie came out and I still remember stumbling across it on Lifetime and being absolutely scarred. no way did I think Fred Savage could be that brutal! at that point, I only knew them as DJ Tanner and Kevin Arnold. I was sorely mistaken...
