- KCRW and CAP UCLA proudly present an exclusive concert with South African vocalists Ladysmith Black Mambazo.
In early March, South African group Ladysmith Black Mambazo was en route to the U.S. to resume their tour, which had already been rescheduled due to the death of their founder, Joseph Shabalala. Then the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak forced them to cancel many performance dates. Except one: Ladysmith Black Mambazo chose to perform an entire concert at the University of California, Los Angeles. On stage before an empty Royce Hall, the group performed to an audience populated with three camera operators, a few staff and a modest crew.
Now, KCRW - in partnership with the Center for the Art of performance at UCLA - debut that intimate concert for the first time, bringing the joyful music of South Africa to the world.

Mambazo is an African heritage music and it should be preserved for ages to come. It's very colourful and inspiring.
Thamsanqa does it elegantly end effortlessly. Thulani resembles his dad the most. Sbongiseni reminds of their other group, Shabalala Rhythm.

I've luved Ladysmith Black Mambazo since the mid 1990's when I first heard them. 💖they are such beautiful people with amazing voices. I hadn't got the CD's out for yrs before tonight. Such wonderful memories.

I think when I'm older, and this pandemic is behind us, I'm going to think back on it, and remember how much this performance comforted me when was so scared about everything that was happening. It reminded me of how beautiful life can be in the midst of so much fear, and I will forever be grateful to them for that.

My 19 year old daughter just discovered you, and she came to me excited and wanted to introduce me to your music. I just smiled and played the Graceland album for her. I have listened to this concert 3 times since it was first aired the other day, and it gets more uplifting every time! Your concert and Bob Dylan's very beautiful new song , "Murder Most Foul", released just yesterday are two of the most wonderful musical gifts to the world in a long time, even if ALL music is always a gift.
