    We did it!! We did it!! We purchased all four of these items, mixed them together, placed moist soil in containers, and planted some seeds in this homemade fertilizer. It has been a week, and some of the seeds have sprouted. We are waiting for them to get a certain size before transplanting them into the ground or larger containers. We just wanted to say....thank you and God bless you!!

    I wish I had that bin for mixing up big batches like that. The zone I'm in I have to start my plants all indoors under lights then transfer them outside in the summer. So, I'm doing what you are, just inside my house during the winter, but in smaller batches. Peat moss is acidic too, so having some lime in your mix wouldn't be a bad idea either, depending on what you are growing of course.

    Many soil recipes have you add some lime to raise the PH and add calcium, especially if you are using lots of peat moss in the recipe. Peat moss is acidic, so you;d need a small bit of lime. At least according to many people that make homemade soil recipes.

    Thanks so much for all the advice and great content! I made my own soil after using this as a guide and planted canteloupe in it - it's growing like crazy! One thing I didn't realize though - the packaged peat moss is dried out and a little hydrophobic, so it wasn't holding onto water very well at first in my containers. A few good soaks in the containers and adding water to the rest of the mix before using it in the garden fixed the problem!

    • @Miiiikeyyyyy415
      @Miiiikeyyyyy415 Рік тому

      Yes you can. It’s pretty much a container mix. Perlite adds good air flow for the roots and the moss hold water.
      The difference is texture. I personally don’t use peat moss and perlite for my ground soil i only use it in containers. I just use cow manure, top soil, native soil, worm castings and some slow release organic fertilizer for my ground soil.

  • @mercedesbenzs600bash

    Wonderful video!
    However, as to peat moss ... this is a product that takes a very, very long time to make. It's not an industrial product, it's dug out of the ground from Pete bogs. These bogs take hundreds of years to produce the peat that's not only used in soil, but that is still used as bricks in parts of Ireland to heat fires. In some small villages, it's the main source of fire "wood". Also, Peat is a main source of flavoring for some of the world's best whiskey/scotch.
    Yes, it's a renewable resource, but it takes 10s if not 100s of years to produce. It cannot be manufactured. It cannot be mass produced. And when it's gone, it's gone for perhaps a hundred years or more.
    A better solution is cocoa coir.
    There are tones of cocoa products from coconut in many forms, to cocoanut oil, and last to the leftovers that are cocoanut coir.
    It's compressed and you can take slices as needed. It will rehydrate, amend the soil for water retention, provide nutrients, and Is many times more sustainable than peat moss. It's even acceptable for some reptile habitats.
    STOP using Pete Moss!
    If there is something in particular in Pete Moss that your soil needs, figure out what it is and then amend with alternatives. Please, for the love of all that is holy, don't use Pete Moss.
    Yes, it's a renewable, but only after a hundred or so years.
