What, you've never heard of Gae Bolg, the legendary "Spear of Mortal Death", wielded by the warrior Cuchulainn? Come on buns, it's been in like every FF!
Probably a game most hardcore people know about but its an odd one that for sure. Fun fact, I had like 60+ hours in this game on the PC then I had to replace one of my drives and lost all my progress.....I burn. Ya ever lost a crazy amount of game progress? Share your pain with me
A long time ago a had a ps2 emulator and also had Kingdom hearts 2 final mix plus (english patch). I had over 110 hours on the game. Had defeated 8/13 data battles and beat terra. Until my dad wiped the pc and I lost everything. I feel your pain
I lost all my LittleBigPlanet data at one point, but I think that may of just been because I switched over to another PS3 console, but regardless I still need to go back and do everything again, and that includes finding people that are 1 - half-decent at the game and 2 - want to actually go through all the boring challenges again so I can get every item in every level. And don't even get me STARTED on completing all the levels without dying. I'm lucky I'm interested in speedrunning the entire thing.
Until you do the Base fights and suddenly it's possible to literally get completely stuck because they're 2-stage fights and you can't escape after the first.
Anyone remember ''Lost odyssey''on the xbox 360 it was a great JRPG developed by former square employees that had a final fantasy style combat system with it's own quirks and a bunch of likeable characters who were cursed to be immortal and had lost their memories so they needed not only recover their memories but also save the world in the progress and tying to the amnesia thing it even had short stories related to the characters in it you could read that were like actual books written by your favourite author of choice that each made you feel a different type of emotion from sadness to joy to hate. Kinda like the books in skyrim but a 1000000 times better.
I absolutely love The Last Remnant. I played the ever loving hell out of it. Also, from what I've read, it's actually basically just Romancing SaGa 4, but with a different name because that series has never really worked out in the west like it has in Japan. Like how FF XIII-3 was basically just Valkyrie Profile 3.
Gae Bolg is a legendary spear from Celtic mythology and like Thor's hammer Mjolnir probably a good 75% of JRPG's and anime series name a weapon after it.
I'm glad the director of this game went on to direct FFXVI. Hiroshi Takai's games always have well-directed cutscenes and great set pieces, I'm glad Square Enix continues to trust him with projects.
It was a little different with how the party was controlled, but I liked. Also people like me who played the older games would have found Vaan out of place and unrelatable as we grew up, and the espers are useless. The only real problem I have with the game is certain super bosses like Zodiarc have the ability to take over combat when critical so your actions are constantly pending. If that found throughout the game, people would be justifiably ticked off.
Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings final fantasy 12 does have a sequel it's called Final fantasy 12 revenant wings and was released on the DS. And if you want to be somewhat lenient on the definition of a prequel final fantasy 12 also had prequels in the forms of the tactics games.
Final Fantasy XII is actually a prequel to the Final Fantasy Tactics games. The party thwarts the Occuria (the closest thing Ivalice has to gods, but they're actually just immensely powerful control freaks who have been controlling everything since forever, which means free will is a lie) in FFXII, which leads to a gradual decline of the state of the world, geological and political upheavals, and eventually causes Ivalice to regress to a medieval level, and gives the Lucavi (basically demons) an opportunity to create a plague which causes people to grow desparate and eventually dabble in dark magic, thereby summoning The Lucavi into the mortal world, setting the stage for FFT.
While I agree with most of what was said (especially the scenario), combat isn't nearly as random as you made it out to be. Based on positioning, formation and teammates (yeah, lots of micro) there are various ways to make characters choose certain actions compared to others. What you didn't mention though, which is its strongest point, is its progression system that is simply amazing. It's incredibly hard to be overleveled, farming doesn't solve the issue, you just have to get good
Confession: When you said "The Last Remnant" I thought "Oh that game on the 360? Yeah, that was fun-" and realized only like a forty seconds in that actually what I was thinking about was "The Last *Odyssey*"
The Last Remnant is one of those games that I keep telling myself I should play but once I finally have time to play a new game I forget about it, lol. Still, I have a friend who's played it and he seemed to enjoy it enough.
loved the last remnant, though i always got stuck on 1 particular fight that seemed waaaaaay to hard compared to the last fight. tried to grind it out, but always found a new shiny thing before i got done. Gae Bulg is a spear from Irish folklore btw (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G%C3%A1e_Bulg), and many spears/lances from final fantasy games shares the name, though naming a gun after it seems quite odd indeed,
Of course I still remember The Last Remnant! One of the best games from Square I played and this game was released 10+ years ago. Though I do understand that casual players will have a tough time. Loved your review though!
Another square-enix game on xbox360 "Infinite Undiscovery" is better than this one in my personal thoughts. although the graphics are poor in modern standard, the battle system is still one of my favorite.
Had an itch to play this game, which led me down a UA-cam rabbit hole on The Last Remnant, and here I am, 8 years late to a SuperButterBuns video. 10/10 accurate review on this only fun and incredibly frustrating game that I have yet to finish…
Got this on the 360 mainly because I saw the Square Enix logo, then the PC last year and the HD remaster for the ps4 recently Because I simply just love the game that much
I love The Last Remnant, especially on PC. Funny story, I beat the game long time ago, but all these time I never knew you could press a button to know which specific attack/action are being used instead of the generic attack with mystic art! or attack with combat arts!
I tried playing this game back in my 360 days as a rental and i'm glad it was a rental. This game just didn't do it for me but what really killed it for me was my favorite Momma knight character dies and her boring daughter comes in to take her place. Like she has barely any emotion her mom died it;s like "Oh mom died, can i take her place? Yipee! I'm a Main character now! "
I didn't remember this game was a thing until you started showing the game footage and I was like "Oh yeah that looks familiar, maybe I have played this once or twice"
Interesting to see this now in 2019, I'm currently playing the remaster and its honestly fucking beautiful! The gameplay is also very complex and requires you to understand its personal mechanics. I'm enjoying it so far, my only TRUE negative gripe with the game is that there's no way to tell where you have to go next.
I own this game!! I should actually try and play it again... Also the Gae Bolg is a legendary spear from Irish folklore....it shows up in several JRPGS.
Obviously the Gae Bolg thing was a joke but it actually has relevance and is a famous weapon used by Scathach and more notably Cu Chulainn (if these sound familiar it's because both are common personas/demons in the megaten franchise).
Its funny I've been coming back to this video since I'm playing this game again on the switch. Looking back on it the Last remnant reminds me of a SaGa game which makes sense since a lot of the team did work on the SaGa series
I thought this was going to be about Revenant Wings. The Gae Bulg, while being a common Final Fantasy/Squenix item, typically a spear, is a spear from Irish Mythology.
Heads up, there's a patch for the PC version which basically fixes all of the technical issues completely. At least when I installed the patch, I never had any texture pop-in, or framerate dropping.
i get you, i droppped the game after a boss because honestly, the dude just made my over the top killer team enemy and that same team oblivorated all my other ones and i was like "meh" and stop playing it.
I really like that you're doing videos on obscure games~! :D It's helping me remember games (that I've at least one's that I've heard of and wanted to play) and/or telling me about new games that I didn't know about before. I was wondering, are you going to do a similar one on the game "Rule of Rose." It feels perfect for this "obscure game/"do you remember..." series" :D Anyways keep up the great work!
Hopefully Buns does a revisiting video for TLR sometime soon because of the PS4 remaster existing now. However, just to let you guys know, the PC version is still perfectly fine and looks nice. The only different thing about the PS4 version is the inclusion of better lighting and a run button, (a run button mod probably exists out there for PC). You can't buy the PC version anymore legally unless you find a code for it on some third-party website, and if not, yo-ho-yo-ho. It's actually a good port that runs very well.
I remembered playing this, and I got "stuck" when I fought with the enemy's "army"... it's like they have never ending cycle of attacks. It was really annoying, too bad I was really enjoying the game. The difficulty is pretty unforgiving and I am a HUGE JRPG fan and do grinds.
Gae Bolg was a legendary spear wielded by Cú Chulainn granted to him by his teacher... whose name I can't recall. It was a cursed spear that always hit the heart of it's target.
Whiteout, Black Out and all that Unit Combo,Weapons Skills, Hidden End Game Boss, Side Quests that actually matters within the game that intertwined and somehow made the Mary Sue cliche plots of saving the world from ending a little bit more complex, unpredictable outcome of any simple battle because the turn base+strategy+formations factors...I guess you haven't really go that far for this game isn't it? this game is definitely harder and was meant to older generations of JRPG that quite bored with the all that "Instant" to get a super boss into punching bag.
I loved the battle system for this game but goddamn the difficulty was insane at the age I originally played it at killed it for me. Made it half way through the second disk and couldn't take it anymore.
I didn't really play Final Fantasy XII when it came out. I didn't know of Final Fantasy's existence at the time and did not have a PS2 at the time. So I really didn't get to experience it. Which is why I want an HD remake of this game. Come on Square-enix you remade X and Type-0 in HD. Which was my first time playing both. I just want to experience XII now.
I own this game on a 360. I'll have to check but I think this is one of the games we're even when you finish it you don't get the Chima stating that you finished it and I was super salty. Also you have to install the game on the 360 because it's unplayable otherwise
The reason you all had trouble with it is because it poses a challenge from the start. Most people see challenge and start grinding. Thats where you fucked up. Everything scales with you. Just take it easy dont linger and after a bit you'll be doing good.
Only on 360. Everything scales with you on PC and PS4 *up to a point*, and the scaling is much less aggressive overall. You actually do need to grind a little bit for better Arts, but thats about it
I bought TLR on a whim at Game stop on sale back in the day. Played it for 5 hours and said nope! Then I bought Lost Odyssey and LOVED it. Hey Buns.....do a show on Lost Odyssey!!
Hey SuperButterBuns, I'm curious if you've ever played MagnaCarta2 for 360. It was personally a really enjoyable game, took a while to take off, but I loved it.
you know it's really funny how many different franchises have the Gae Bolg, and the immediate urge of the fandom to instantly call it the Gay Bulge is always behind it
What, you've never heard of Gae Bolg, the legendary "Spear of Mortal Death", wielded by the warrior Cuchulainn? Come on buns, it's been in like every FF!
And Lancer from Fate was based on Cu as well, and also Persona has Cu too
There's even a Cuchulainn in FF12, but he's NOTHING like the Irish warrior of legend, haha
Rc3651
What i meant to say was, FSN has a warrior who is literally cu, he's not the only lancer from legend
Damn you beat me to it haha
MrInuhanyou123 I was just saying that it's funny that Cu is in FF12, the game that Buns spent a lot of the video talking about, haha
I lost my entire ff13 data when i was finally at grand pulse i still havent caught up
I once lost my save file for Journey and had to start all the way over. The dark times were among me then.
I lost my FF12 progress once when I turned the game off while it was still saving. It corrupted the whole save file and I had to start all over :(
The pc version auto saves after every battle. DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH LOVE THAT MAKES ME FEEL!?
Xedhadeaus loads?
Until you do the Base fights and suddenly it's possible to literally get completely stuck because they're 2-stage fights and you can't escape after the first.

Kinda like the books in skyrim but a 1000000 times better.
I've been wanting to play Lost Odyssey for a very very long time. But alas, no Xbox 360...
Erick Landon mentioned it.
I still can't believe that there is no remaster for it. I really loved it
Erick Landon is AMAZING
I love how buns manages to balance her have great humor AND be really clear and informative
it's just, reaaally great
I absolutely love The Last Remnant. I played the ever loving hell out of it.
Also, from what I've read, it's actually basically just Romancing SaGa 4, but with a different name because that series has never really worked out in the west like it has in Japan. Like how FF XIII-3 was basically just Valkyrie Profile 3.
Just to screw with you years later you can get this for your phone in the app store
I always pronounced the gun "gae bulge"
the legendary weapon known as "gay bulge"
Fun fact: this was the first Steam game I ever played. As in, the one I couldn’t play without first making an account after I bought it
Gae Bolg is a legendary spear from Celtic mythology and like Thor's hammer Mjolnir probably a good 75% of JRPG's and anime series name a weapon after it.
I don't know who you are or why you are in my recommended videos, but I'm glad I found your channel. Very funny and informative stuff :)
I'm glad the director of this game went on to direct FFXVI. Hiroshi Takai's games always have well-directed cutscenes and great set pieces, I'm glad Square Enix continues to trust him with projects.
The micromanaging in this game is something I adore. It also has four armed cat people, so that's cool.
Why do people keep shitting on FF12? That game was good.
Haters gonna hate, man. And by the way, that game was amazing! xD
(Vaan aside, of course =P)
It was a little different with how the party was controlled, but I liked. Also people like me who played the older games would have found Vaan out of place and unrelatable as we grew up, and the espers are useless. The only real problem I have with the game is certain super bosses like Zodiarc have the ability to take over combat when critical so your actions are constantly pending. If that found throughout the game, people would be justifiably ticked off.
it's one of the best games i've played in my life
I've hardly actually seen anyone who dislikes it, it's mostly people talking about how people disliked it
Sure, if you pretend that your character matters in any way. And my god, the plot.. political intrigue isn't exactly the genres forte.
Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings
final fantasy 12 does have a sequel it's called Final fantasy 12 revenant wings and was released on the DS. And if you want to be somewhat lenient on the definition of a prequel final fantasy 12 also had prequels in the forms of the tactics games.
I think XII is actually the prequel to Tactics as several species are extinct during the leon heart war.
I loved Revenant Wings!
Antlo Avina There was also a planned console sequel that never was.
Joshua Caine < promote this man!
I LOVED The Last Remnant! Even though I literally could not beat the final boss because of linking too many groups of enemies together.
While I agree with most of what was said (especially the scenario), combat isn't nearly as random as you made it out to be. Based on positioning, formation and teammates (yeah, lots of micro) there are various ways to make characters choose certain actions compared to others.

RNG is right, i died during the tutorial fight........main character got killed with a critical.....really tutorial...really =___=
loved the last remnant, though i always got stuck on 1 particular fight that seemed waaaaaay to hard compared to the last fight. tried to grind it out, but always found a new shiny thing before i got done. Gae Bulg is a spear from Irish folklore btw (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G%C3%A1e_Bulg), and many spears/lances from final fantasy games shares the name, though naming a gun after it seems quite odd indeed,
I like it. I've never beaten it, but it's a really fun jRPG that really nails the feeling of a massive army at war.
Of course I still remember The Last Remnant! One of the best games from Square I played and this game was released 10+ years ago. Though I do understand that casual players will have a tough time. Loved your review though!
SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO anyone else come to this video after the announcement of the remaster today? xD
yo what about lost odyssey dude. a grate JRPG made by sakaguchi that also flew a bit under the radar.
It's so good
It's getting a remaster for the ps4 so maybe it's time to remember the last remnant.
I love this ehm... series of yours, keep it up. I love to be reminded of games that could have been/should have been great but never were.
Had to look this up due to the remastered version coming out for Switch today.
same that's exactly why I ended up here too
Another square-enix game on xbox360 "Infinite Undiscovery" is better than this one in my personal thoughts.
although the graphics are poor in modern standard, the battle system is still one of my favorite.
well... at least published by Square-Enix....
i played this game for about 3 hours on PC and couldn't figure out what to do or how to do it...especially the combat.
Had an itch to play this game, which led me down a UA-cam rabbit hole on The Last Remnant, and here I am, 8 years late to a SuperButterBuns video. 10/10 accurate review on this only fun and incredibly frustrating game that I have yet to finish…
I thought she was going to talk about Final Fantasy XII Revenant Wing on the DS.
"Come on guys, let's kick some A!"
Fun game. Sadly I never beat it - I kept getting distracted. Also its soundtrack is awesome as hell.
i have the 360 version and you were not lying about that slide show but i still like it overall
and now it's getting delisted. :C
Still playing this game to dis day to DIS DAY!
You deserve so many more views for these videos Buns. Awesome quality :3
Glad I have this game on steam!
I saw you playing this on steam i was like AAYEEEE awsome XD i remeber my brother playing this he loved it i wacthed him most of the time
Got this on the 360 mainly because I saw the Square Enix logo, then the PC last year and the HD remaster for the ps4 recently

3:15 Fun fact that is a reference to the myth of the Irish hero Cuchulain it was the weapon he used to kill people instantly
I didn't remember this game was a thing until you started showing the game footage and I was like "Oh yeah that looks familiar, maybe I have played this once or twice"
Oh man, those combat scenes bring up memories of 'Activating Combat Mode' from you already know what. ;)
Interesting to see this now in 2019, I'm currently playing the remaster and its honestly fucking beautiful! The gameplay is also very complex and requires you to understand its personal mechanics. Just bought the remaster on Switch. Can't wait to jump back into this jem.
This is the first video I've seen of yours, and you are hilarious! You got a subscriber.
Miss Buns I just recently Got this game and boy are you so right! Them texture loadings....lmbo ^_^

This game was cool, played it aswell.. I adored its music too.
Although this game hardly has replay value though.. Nice experience though.
OMG the humor! especially the character describing
Wow, I've never heard of your channel before but I'm now completely on board. This video had me rolling. Excellent job.
i get you, i droppped the game after a boss because honestly, the dude just made my over the top killer team enemy and that same team oblivorated all my other ones and i was like "meh" and stop playing it.
I got so into this game and then my Xbox broke I cried for days
I really like that you're doing videos on obscure games~! :D It's helping me remember games (that I've at least one's that I've heard of and wanted to play) and/or telling me about new games that I didn't know about before. Gae bolg refers to the spear of irish myth which is thrown by a "fork of the toes" It's basically a barb wire bomb.
the Tain is fucking great
I remembered playing this, and I got "stuck" when I fought with the enemy's "army"... it's like they have never ending cycle of attacks.
Scathach.
Downloaded this game on the Switch and I love it!
You are hilarious! I love your presentation and reviewing skills, you honestly made me laugh. Great stuff!
I almost farted laughing when the spreadsheet pop up.
I love the background music
Whiteout, Black Out and all that Unit Combo,Weapons Skills, Hidden End Game Boss, Side Quests that actually matters within the game that intertwined and somehow made the Mary Sue cliche plots of saving the world from ending a little bit more complex, unpredictable outcome of any simple battle because the turn base+strategy+formations factors...I guess you haven't really go that far for this game isn't it?
this game is definitely harder and was meant to older generations of JRPG that quite bored with the all that "Instant" to get a super boss into punching bag.
I adored this game even with all its flaws. And it has amazing music.
this is probably one of the funniest reviews I've ever seen
and the fish people
Rest in peace grandma
So, the good thing about this game was that it served as warm up using unreal engine for future games?
I loved the battle system for this game but goddamn the difficulty was insane at the age I originally played it at killed it for me. Made it half way through the second disk and couldn't take it anymore.
I didn't really play Final Fantasy XII when it came out. I didn't know of Final Fantasy's existence at the time and did not have a PS2 at the time. So I really didn't get to experience it. I own this game on a 360. I'll have to check but I think this is one of the games we're even when you finish it you don't get the Chima stating that you finished it and I was super salty. Also you have to install the game on the 360 because it's unplayable otherwise
The Last Remnant is a good game and it can be very difficult if you dont use different strategies to defeat the harder fights in this game.
You actually do need to grind a little bit for better Arts, but thats about it
The number of scene transitions hurts my brain x.x
Buns honestly i love your content so much its serous and with tons of comdey i love it
I bought TLR on a whim at Game stop on sale back in the day. Played it for 5 hours and said nope! Then I bought Lost Odyssey and LOVED it. Hey Buns.....do a show on Lost Odyssey!!
I bought this game for PC a year or two ago.......then I remembered that my computer is a potato in disguise.
I want a beginner guide so much
Hey SuperButterBuns, I'm curious if you've ever played MagnaCarta2 for 360. It was personally a really enjoyable game, took a while to take off, but I loved it.
Gae Bolg is an actual weapon. I think it was from Irish Mythology, wielded by Cú Chulainn. The only reason I know this is because of Fate/Stay Night.
you know it's really funny how many different franchises have the Gae Bolg, and the immediate urge of the fandom to instantly call it the Gay Bulge is always behind it
I never knew this game existed till now..
Funny, I re-played this like few month ago.
I actually own this game! I thought it was pretty great.
And yet ANOTHER rerelease...on the Switch. Someone at SE loves this game.
Played it twice, loved it
Gae bolg is a legendary spear like the Excalibur kinda thing
I ACTUALLY REMEMBER THIS
i missed your channel alot
That moment you realize Vaan was Aladin!
Wow forgot about you dunno how but your so funny and dead on in these reviews always make me smile thx so much lol
Just found your videos. Very good!
Look what’s getting a remaster.
I love this game. Can't wait for the remaster! Played it on PC though. :D
