    To explain vaguely the reason why Hulk's eye pops out when he's trapped and about to be punctured with the needle. Basically, it has to do with the various animal DNA used to experiment on Banner. In this movie it explains his regeneration capabilities much like how some amphibians can do this and even regrow limbs. What you're seeing with his eye is like what some animals can do (can't find or remember the specific animals) which is when they're faced with danger they can make that part of them larger. You see it again in the dog fight as well when Hulk is being bitten in the shoulder. He grows his shoulder until the dog's jaw breaks. Just wanted to mention that because many people think it's a design problem when it's actually a trait of the Hulk in this movie.

    • @gagetaylor192
      @gagetaylor192 2 роки тому +20

      @@Cloud-fk1ms Yeah the whole prologue of the movie is basically an exposition of explaining the Hulk and his abilities and to drive the point of the DNA experiments. I guess it's not as memorable seeing as it kinda drags so people just don't remember this little detail. Many people's critique of his design comes down to people thinking the directors were like "hey wouldn't it be funny if we just made him super green and gave him these traits for no reason?"

    • @Wolvahulk
      @Wolvahulk 2 роки тому +5

      If I remember correctly rats can actually pop their eyes out of their sockets a bit and make them look larger.
      It isn't exactly why the Hulk can do that but it has a part in actual nature. Overall I'm pretty sure they use it more of a sign of affection but I think they can use it when they feel endangered?
      As for body parts, I also vaguely remember that octopi or other similar invertebrates can enlarge and shrink their limbs in a way.

    • @pezorama
      @pezorama 2 роки тому +7

      I'm gonna disagree here and say it was simpler than that. he just Grows more the angrier he gets, and that part was growing in front of us, up close, making it look weird. but the culmination of the scene, which is him breaking out of that foam that holds him, only happens because he grows bigger.

    Danny Elfman's music is unlike any other. Sure, the super hero movies of today have epic scores that fit the tone. But they all lack character. Each song is forgettable and can be swapped without anyone noticing. But Elfman's music in Spiderman and Hulk were memorable. They have character, and can easily be recognized. When you hear those songs, you think "oh yeah. That's totally Hulk."

    This movie was misunderstood hugely. People expected a superhero smasher. They got a psychological metaphorical thriller. The film the plot was so good...its unfortunate that it still gets huge ignorance instead of respect.
    Another light-hearted hulk film with better CGI was 2008 incredible hulk. MCU Ruffalo hulk is the worst of them all as it is nowhere near the exploration of the psychological depth the hulk character posses.

      @@OklahomaBoomer That is exactly the reason why I don't enjoy nor can get into the MCU movies anymore. Everything is treated like a joke. Everytime when an MCU movie tries to be more serious and compelling, the dramatic moment and seriousness is always underscored by some cheap gag, completely squandering the tone and mood of the moment. Like Fat Thor for example. Thor is depressed and in seclusion out of guilt for not killing Thanos to stop the snap, but Endgame decides to turn Thor into a fat, beer guzzling gamer to drown his sorrows away and thats the joke!?

    Hulk was a psychological thriller,that was also a study on the issues surrounding fatherhood,memories & even more so around mental health issues,which just happened to be based around & on the Hulk character.
    It used some unique,artistic ways to shoot a film as if it was a comic book but not near as good as the way Sin City or Scott Pilgrim achieved that same feat to perfection.I didn’t really like it the 1st time I watched it, but it was a film that’s grew on me more & more with each viewing over the years. I’ve ended up watching it way too many times to count. I think I’ve watched this more times than any other film based on a comic book character,apart from maybe ‘Nolan’s ‘Batman Begins’,which is the best comic based film ever,imo.

      @@thelonesurvivor3955 True, but I don't recall saying this film was a perfect film, just that I think it was a very deep film that most people don't get.
      But yes the film does have problems, like certain cgi scenes, some slow paced moments, and certain transitions, but overall I thought it was very good.
      I think it's a film that has it's problems, but it's also a film that feels very inspired by the 60s-70s hulk comics as to hulk's character and background.
      Also like I said, it's art, not everyone sees the same thing in it or likes it the same for the same reasons.

    I think the shit Hulk 03 gets for the CGI is because, well, it's a giant bright green dude. The following films toned down his color significantly. I think the damn near neon color of him throws people off.
    I think the texture of Hulk 03 is starting to show it's age, but he mostly still holds up. He's composited into scenes amazingly well. His weight and movement never feels off. He's one hell of a creation.
    There is more to the believability of a CGI character than just sheer detail of the model. It's how that model is integrated in the footage.
    It's the Jurassic Park principle. In isolation those original dinos in the first film are indeed showing their age. But the reason JP is always used as a reference point on how good CGI looked back in the day is because of how strategically it was placed and how well the models where rendered with weight and movement.
    The Hulk in the 08 film just looks like dog turds most of the time. The model REALLY let's him down. He looks like hard rubber or plastic most of the time. There's no give or natural movement to his flesh. He's like a rock hard clay man or something - like of you gave Stretch Armstrong veins and left in the sun to dry out.
    I think the Hulk in the first Avengers takes the overall win for best overall design and CGI though. While Hulk 03 takes the EASY WIN for best film.

      You should've played Doom 3 before they changed it so you can use both flashlight AND gun at the same time, before it was one or the other, then you would have known why it is the origin of one of the primordial memes, the "can't see shit captain!", also you'd be able to watch that scene effortlessly, for example, i've watched Alien vs Predator: Requiem and managed to see almost everything in the movie just because i've had played Doom 3 years prior rofl, when people started complaining about the darkness issue in the movie I was like "I don't get it, it looks fine to me", but back to the topic, 2003's Hulk will always excel for me, it is a tragic story and I knew that even tho I was 11 years old when it released, guess I knew what I was getting into thanks to watching The Incredible Hulk tv series from 1978 while growing up(still love The Lonely Man by Joe Harnell to this day), the only superhero movies that I respect as much as this one is Watchmen(another polarizing movie among the public) and Logan, I don't know, more grounded and character-driven superhero movies always enchant me, not to say that I didn't like Sam Raimi's first 2 Spider-Man movies, X-Men, X2, BvS Director's Cut or Justice League Snyder's Cut, because I liked all of these, but 2003's Hulk, Watchmen and Logan hold a special place in my heart.

I absolutely loved this film as a kid, I loved how deep it got with its characters and the drama in the film was excellent. Also the CGI in my opinion still kinda holds up in places, Industrial Light & Magic really did a great job at bringing The Hulk to life.
    Also the scene that I still find beautiful and heartbreaking was when they kill Bruce’s father with a missile and Bruce while still underwater has the only one good memory of his dad, when he hugged his dad and he wished him good night. It personally hits me hard in the feels.

  • @jeromyperez5532
    @jeromyperez5532 2 роки тому +8

    The reason the CGI looks better in Ang Lee's Hulk is several fold-
    2003 Hulk had a LOT of money spent pioneering simulations for just about every single conceivable level of believability. Everything from the Hulk's body-fat content to his musculature, to his vascular system, and tendons, all that jazz. I remember as a kid obsessing over the special features and being blown away with all the work that went into that movie.
    They made sure that they captured the light, and kept it natural using multiple reference photos- including a capture of the set at the time of shooting using a reflective ball- they also had a ball painted to match the Hulk's skin and gave it the same level of reflectivity so that they could match it to the photos that day.
    Ang Lee also said that he wanted all the rage to be under the surface, like someone is trying to fight it. When they started doing Mocap, everyone wanted to go over the top and exaggerate the movements. And he kept pulling it back and making it more and more subtle.
    Credit to the 2008 Hulk though, much of the CGI budget was gobbled up by reshoots and late stage reworks. Marvel and Norton clashed on what the finale should look like and how everyone would look as an end product. Overall, all that clash and indecision meant that less time and money was spent on the CGI for that film.
    The fan favorite Avengers Hulk has the most robust CGI of the three, but I agree doesn't look as believable despite being more grounded than the others. And I think that's because the lighting doesn't feel as real. Hollywood's cinematography over the last 10 years or so has just become a series of insecure copycats mimicking eachother out of fear of critique and it's pathetic.

    watching this as a kid religiously, every time i hear that sound track to this day I just get goosebumps and flashbacks of all the suspenseful dramatic scenes of the movie wash over me. It really stuck with me over the years and sticks out more than anything I've heard before, its a hero movie but with the soundtrack of a horror, it's serious, as it should be its the hulk. So help me god i could be in the middle of my first borns birth if I heard that music I'm stopping what I'm doing and thinking about that movie.

    honestly the theme music of this movie is still one of my absolute favourites. I think it captures the concept of the hulk perfectly. Also the effects when his Dad get's his power and fuses with an object still looks and sounds amazing and also still love this final battle. Yes this movie has flaws but I certainly would not call it terrible

    @Alexander Meek, I am a long time Hulk fan, from the mid 1970s. I like Ang Lee's Hulk, and in my opinion this version is far better than the "Ragnarock" Hulk, the "Infinity War" Hulk, and the "Endgame" Hulk. "Why?" Great question.
    Here is my answer. Ang Lee demonstrated the two immutable Hulk laws very well:
    * "Hulk is the strongest one there is!", and
    * "The madder Hulk gets the stronger Hulk gets!"
    Ang Lee also demonstrated the following Hulk abilities:
    * his quick healing factor,
    * his great invulnerability,
    * his ability to easily defeat the US Military,
    * his "never quit, never surrender" attitude,
    * his ability to jump vast distances in a single bound,
    * his super speed, and
    * his psychological/emotional issues.
    Ang Lee also did an excellent job demonstrating that Bruce's father:
    * is/was quite abusive, and
    * murdered Bruce's mother.
    The MCU utterly failed to establish all of the above Hulk mythos. In fact, the MCU has utterly destroyed the Hulk's mythos. Currently, She Hulk is continuing the unwanted destructive process.
    Note, the Edward Norton Hulk, and the "Anengers" Hulk depicted the above Hulk mythos very well.
    Note, the "Age of Ultron" Hulk was a transition Hulk (i.e., from the real Hulk, to the soft, weak, and irrelevant Hulk).

    The only movie where Stan Lee appeared twice.. At the university talking to Big Lou, and in San Francisco, at the window of the house the soldiers were on the rooftop... By the way Bruce overloaded his dad with power equivalent to 70 exatons of tnt, making him a moon buster, but he's 'a million times more powerful, more radiant' which makes him a large planet buster.. His size in the movie is no coincidence because world breaker Hulk is around 12 feet tall.. This Hulk is too OP

    It’s so refreshing to see people have such a positive outlook on this absolute classic GEM of a Hulk movie, it was one of the first movies I ever remember watching and it’s still a special one to me now as an adult, I always wanted to see this take of Hulk expanded on and continued into another movie, it’s a shame The Incredible Hulk acted as a soft reboot and sidelined this take. I know for the sake of consistency with the MCU they would’ve had to have made some sacrifices, like Hulk not growing physically when he got angrier, wouldn’t work well in an Avengers movie so I get that, but still, I’d love to see another standalone Hulk movie again. It’s been too long since we’ve had full focus on him.

    Thank you so much for doing this video. I am from Sri Lanka and I first saw Ang Lee’s Hulk on a VCD when I was 6. I made sure to watch it at least once a day and visitors at my house had to go through the pleasantry of watching it whenever they came to my place. It was probably the only movie that I fully watched so many times instead of only resorting to the action scenes. It spoke to me in a singularly unique manner and it changed my life ever since. The aesthetic Lee created was etched in me from the first watch.
    What a ride!

    The Hulk creature is better directed. Ang Lee shows how it feels to be the Hulk, he put a lot of effort on the physics of the Hulk and it has Hulk in the desert against the military, that's the most marvel comic book style, straight from the Hulk comics.

    I absolutely agree the Hulk CGI from 2003 looks 100x better than current day Hulk. Everytime people say it looks bad I’m jus like “🤨”… when Hulk has the mud on him, that’s one of the most realistic Hulk shots. Having your cgi character interact with the environment and touching “real” practical things certainly gives off the illusion he’s real. The MCU Hulk it’s too detailed, almost as detailed as everything around him. The MCU hulk looks good, but there’s always something off about it

    Agree on the cgi. I NEVER understand when people mention the cgi as a negative. This movie is way ahead of its time. The shots of the hulk when he's covered in dirt are genuinely amazing still. I think it's because of how over saturated he is, thats the main reason people view it negatively. It's the only explanation for me. Otherwise, it really confuses me whenever somebody bags on the cg here. Its genuinely really good for its age. Full cg character in 2003.

    Agree completely about Danny Elfman’s score. Legit stuck in my head since first watching the film.
    However I don’t think 03 Hulk looks more realistic or “better” than 08 Hulk. Ang Lee’s film feels more tangible, like the hulk is actually physically DOING what he’s doing (throwing tanks, running, etc) While Edward Norton has a more realistic looking hulk with muscles and veins, striations, the movement is much more cartooney

    The movie is definitely really underrated, the only real downsides is that it's really long with pacing that is really slow, the sets can also seem really cheap at times almost looking like something you would see in a porn video. Also some of the stuff this movie goes into like the affects of child abuse/ childhood trauma, murder, and of course how to deal with your anger, it can make this movie feel extremely depressing with how seriously these things are taken by the movie and just how much of it Bruce has gone through personally but that's how hulk should be written because his story is inherently sad and that process of him struggling to learn how to cope with his trauma, depression and anger while also still trying to keep those around him/ the people he loves safe and do the right is what makes him such a relatable and interesting character because everyone has delt with these issues at least to some degree at some point in there life (at least in his early story arcs anyways before he joins the avengers). But yeah it's really underrated, as long as you can handle the depressing story, the slow pacing and the some what cheap looking sets I'd definitely give it a recommendation to watch especially if you're a fan of early hulk stories before he fully embraces the hulk and joins the avengers.

As a child, you simply don't comprehend it well enough to enjoy the movie for what it is. There are ofc the HULK SMASH scenes, which every media including Hulk probably includes, but they spent time establishing characters and an overall plot before the first transformation scene. Of all of the films that have used Hulk, this one is the only one I think really reaches the same depth as the Hulk comics.

I love the chemistry between Eric Bana and Jennifer Connely, the deep dive in Banner's dark past and psychological state, Sam Elliot's general Ross is not just a douchebag, what he does, he does because he feels is the right thing to do and is able to compromise. It's a dark movie, a beautiful movie, the tragedy of a cursed man, which is exactly what an Hulk movie should be. But I guess people are not interrested in that. All they want is "HULK SMASH" "ANGRY ANGRY" and jokes every two seconds.

    She Hulk had me thinking about back when Hulk was kind of scary before the MCU made him a joke. So I was curious and I just rewatched for the first time since it came out. I was surprised how much better it was than I remembered! I still think it’s got a lot of issues. Ang Lee’s decision to make it look like a comic book hurts it. Also the Ending is the weakest part of the film in my opinion and it brings the whole thing down.
    However I was impressed with its slower pace and its decision to focus on child abuse and trauma. Eric Bana might be my favorite Bruce Banner now. Jennifer Connelly is way better than Liv Tyler! It was also refreshing after all the superhero movies we got in the past several years. It would never be made today!
    The 2008 Hulk my still be might be my favorite Hulk movie, but now I can appreciate this one for its mature themes artsy approach. There’s a lot of great stuff in it and it’s a shame it’s taken me until now to realize it.
