  • At this week’s China Chat we are joined by Grant Rhode for a discussion of his book, “Great Power Clashes along the Maritime Silk Road: Lessons from History to Shape Current Strategy.”
    Grant Rhode teaches and conducts research at the Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University and at the U.S. Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island. He is Associate in Research at the Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies at Harvard University and Faculty Affiliate of the China Maritime Studies Institute of the U.S. Naval War College. He has been a Visiting Scholar in Taiwan at both National Chengchi University and National Taiwan University. He trained in Chinese studies in the UK before his doctoral studies in Asian Diplomatic History and International Relations.
    Dr. Rhode’s current research focuses on China’s role in historical and contemporary Eurasian maritime affairs. He has recently returned from cruising the China coast.

    Thank you very much for the presentation and adding greatly to my knowledge of the history of Asian land and Maritime trade and also Naval traditions. I'm not finished watching the presentation, but I hope you mentioned something about the Chinese Fleet in I believe the 1400s that reached South Africa at the same time the Portuguese were coming around the western coast of Africa
