    That clean tone + chorus and reverb just SCREAMS 80s.

      It was the BEST of times and... some of the worst of times too. The 80's must have been one of the most FUN decades in the history of the world for kids to grow up in even without "social media". Social Media back then was showing up in PERSON to interact with your fellow Humans, unlike "socializing" with fake A.I. Facebook bots and cellphone texts or the ridiculously Uber Narcissistic online cults of today that beg to pass for a social life.

    40 year old amp, and you don't even have to worry about the condition the tubes are in, because there are none! - just plug and play.

    • @markuskoivisto
      @markuskoivisto 6 років тому +10

      at that age both solid state and tube amps are going to have capacitors drying out and the service is basically the same for both.

      really what all guitarist "should" be feeling when they 1st pick up their instrument...however...i find if you pick up your guitar when you've had a great night restful sleep and then grab a coffee and quietly start to check your tuning on your Quality Acoustic Guitar 1st and if need be (like i do anyways) i dial up some awesome Jazz/Soul backing tracks to get my thinking turned 'on" then after about an hour 45 mins...i then grab my custom Strat or Tele and then start digging into more aggressive Steve Luk or Lee Rit stuff and after a few hours of that THEN..i plug in my gorgeous George Benson GB300 and then dive straight into Pat Meth music the rest of the next 2hrs and then i'm good for the day@@!!

    Don't mind me. I'm just here waiting for all the people to decide it doesn't sound good anymore once they find out it doesn't have valves.

    • @Sorc47
      @Sorc47 8 років тому +56

      I really hate that. I remember somebody asking about a Blackstar HT amp. The guy said it sounded really good, but decided not to buy it because it wasn't 100% valve. Somebody recommended buying a different amp and putting a tube screamer in front to keep it all valve...

      I own the new JC-40. Yes, the 120 had a terrible overdrive channel. the 40, however, is wayyyy better! The whole notion of solid state is worse than tube needs to stop. Some of the best records out there couldn't have been produced without the Roland JC series. I slap a JHS Charlie Brown in front of my JC-40 and I get tone compliments all day. For some of us clean players who don't need to shred all day, the JC series offer more clarity and allow the nuances of my guitar playing really shine. Just try one sometime. What type of amp you play through?

    • @akaiboi_89
      @akaiboi_89 8 років тому +6

      +John Smith lol I totally accept that. I'm just saying, those who own the new 40 should know to tweak to taste. Very subjective I know but I swear it sounds good lol. Appreciate this not turning into a dumb argument.

    Thanks to Pete and Mick, and that beautiful intro, I bought a JC-40 (about a year ago) - best amp I've ever played. So perfectly clean. The Chorus is "other-worldly." Add any OD or Distortion pedal for some dirt. This is a great demo!

    Personally I'm a big fan of Johnny Marr and all his jingly jangly guitar playing, particularly the earlier stuff. I'd been playing Fender and Vox amps in search of the right tone on which to base my own, when I stumbled upon these Roland Jazz Chorus amps. Hands down my favorite amps ever. Solid State reliability and killer clean tones. The best sounding chorus in the world. Also it nails all those intros in Cult songs.

    Some things they don't say in this vid:
    - The JC120 has an enormous, bold, loud, beautiful room-filling clean. Something's wrong with the one in this video. I agree with the other commenters that one of the speakers is probably wired out of phase.
    - The chorus is not just a signal processing effect. One speaker plays the dry signal, one plays a pitch-vibrato modulated signal, and they mix in the air. That's why it sounds so huge. Each speaker is driven by a separate power amp--it's basically a wet-dry rig in a box.
    - The distortion in the JC40 is a complete redesign as I understand it. Even the greatest lovers of the JC120 don't say good things about its distortion. Given that Roland/Boss also makes the Blues Driver I'd say they should be capable of good solid state distortion.
    Also, the JC120 is known for its hiss. I haven't yet heard a JC40 live. I'm really curious as to whether they have got that hiss under control as I've heard mixed things.

    • @richardharrold9736

      Have you encountered a JC160? I was wondering how they compare.

    • @mpt1750
      @mpt1750 8 років тому

      Actually I never even knew the JC160 existed until your comment. Now I'm intrigued, especially on finding that the stereo effect for the JC160 comes from running the wet/dry speakers in an X pattern.

    • @richardharrold9736
      @richardharrold9736 8 років тому +1

      mpt1750
      It's a rare beast, along with the Lab Series L7 (also a 4x10 combo). Somewhere else in the comments on this video is a JC160 owner I was talking to - he says the bigger cabinet and greater speaker surface area of the 160 gives it more bottom end than the 120.

    • @ChiggidyChuck
      @ChiggidyChuck 7 років тому +1

      the hiss is there buts its really not too noticeable and when your playing its non existent

    • @stevencross8836
      @stevencross8836 6 років тому

      Sadly the JC40 does indeed have the same old ungodly hiss problem. I love the sound of a JC120 and I was really excited when I heard about the new JC40. I bought one a while back and it sounded absolutely great but unfortunately it had to go back because of that hiss.
      People keep saying it is not noticeable when you play but that is not entirely accurate. It depends on what you play and where you play it. If you play quiet music in a quiet environment that hiss, IMHO, is very obvious nearly all the time and it is completely distracting. A real shame because, as has been mentioned above, sitting in a room with one and playing it is amazing! The definition of the word lush.

      +John Smith not sure I ever claimed ownership of the idea or that it was original. I was in fact simply stating that, given a large lottery sized input of cash, this beautiful sounding amp would make a great partner to my amp. I am at worst guilty of stating the obvious.

      Sorry for that kind of unnecessary response dude. I'm kind of looking at the same kind of thing just with a different amp for the dirty. I haven't decided on what I want to run in that area, but a JVM would definitely be a high up choice, though they're just so damn expensive.

      Well finally got one this past month! It IS everything I had hoped it would be and then some! Super lush tones in stereo and crips cleans through the right channel too. I use the Distortion with the treble turned down and then set to 2-3 along with my other Distortion and OD pedals and it works great as a boost. The Chorus and Reverb are excellent too. The Vibrato is decent but I prefer Tremolo more so I use a Boss TR pedal for that. It's also 40 watts but is louder than my Katana MKII 100. The headroom in this amp is amazing too! I used this with my Billy Duffy Gretsch White Falcon and it's so damn good !!!

    Hey guys, thank you so much for reviewing the JC-40! I've been researching the JC-120 for awhile and thinking about a used one, but now with the JC-40 RI I think it's sealed the deal for me. My only question is, even though the onboard distortion is semi-passable, how does it sound with some nice dirt pedals? Would I be able to get a passable tube emulation sound, or would you recommend running this amp mostly for cleans and a tube amp for dirty tones?? Thanks!

    Thank you for the demo. The JC amps seem like quite a niche product. The stereo effect with both speakers miked is really nice. Both the chorus and vibrato are great. I don't if anyone ever uses the built in distortion, though - it's just not good. I saw Nokie Edwards of The Ventures using one in one of their live shows in Japan. He seems to like his sound squeaky clean, so this is the perfect amp.

To answer the question of the age of the JC-120 in this video, the fact that it has the big flip switch for the Chorus circuit indicates that it is older than 1990. In 1990 Roland had to change the design to use a rotary switch because that big flip switch was no longer available. So the youngest that amp can possibly be is 32 years old.

    I've hoping you guys would do the JC-40 for a while now and stunning playing. Quick questions tho; does it still sound this rich at lower volumes (e.g. home but not necessarily as low as 'bedroom') and can you get a good raunchy bluesy tone with pedals if you want to?

    JC40 is fantastic. I'm a fan of 2x12 amps for live situations. particularly if you're the only guitarist performing in a band, but I'm a big fan of both.

    I love when folks balk at solid state amps but... how many of their dirt pedals are tube driven?

    I just picked up a JC-120 locally for $535 US. It's in mint condition and serial# dates it from Dec 1982. It sounds SOOOOO amazing. I think my fave guitar with it (although they all sound really good with it) is my centerblock Gretsch. This pairing is so good even at low volumes (guitar vol on 10, amp on 2). So happy to have one of these iconic amps.

    Great vid - how was the background hiss when playing at bedroom volume? It was pretty noticeable whenever there was dialogue and I'm guessing it was from the amp and not the signal chain

    I found out yesterday that Joe Newman from Alt-j uses one of these! That's how he gets his sweet clean tones.

    Would you guys do a comparison of chorus effects from different pedals on a popular clean amp vs. effects on the Roland Jazz Chorus amp? I think it would be cool and potentially useful to a lot of people, especially if they are interested in the sound but can't spring for a new amp.

    I had an old JC120 from the 80s. Sounded good, but no where as nice as this JC40. So I decided to look for a JC40 locally, and found one. My god... I need it.

    With a little bit of compression, some mild OD ala Boss Blues Driver, a slowly pulsating tremolo and the chorus and reverb kicked in this amp could very well be on of the best rootsy slide amps out there. I NEEEEED one ASAP !
