Hello, I'm from Thailand and to me Sri Lanka is always our close related in Buddhism. First Buddhism did greatest prosper in Sri Lanka while slowly declined in India. Then our ancestry, Siam adopted Buddhism from Sri Lanka as Lankawamsa Lastly when Buddhism in Lanka was declining after invasions by western colonizer, Lanka retrieved the lineage back from Siam as Siamwamsa / Upaliwamsa. We are related via Buddhism. I love you Sri Lanka.

My path to becoming Buddhist was through a Sri Lankan Buddhist vahara here in Tampa, FL USA. I am very thankful that Buddhism survived against all odds in Sri Lanka.

I am a Tamil Catholic woman, born in Trincomalee. But being from a lower caste, my father had me educated in the Sinhalese medium. I had many Buddhist friends, and often went to the temple with them on Poya days. After that I went to Peradeniya to study medicine, and eventually became a doctor. The fact that I was able to do so is a testament to the tremendous progress that Sri Lanka made after independence. I worked at a hospital in Colombo for a while, and was very happy. I left the country with great sadness at the start of the civil war, and though I often think about it I have never been back there.
You should come back. The war is over. People get along here and other than trouble makers who are as usual trying to stir division, Sri Lanka is finally starting to actually unite again like it was over 1000 years ago.
Thank you for this excellent history. I am practicing in a different Mahasangha tradition but very much appreciate the Sri Lankan Buddhist community here in Pittsburgh in the US. _(())_

Sri Lanka and Indonesia should have done like Japan, and off'd the people who came to convert them right? But, then again that would be against Buddhism's greatest ideal.
@@srwla2501 Japan not as black and white, the Emperor had a laissez faire approach to how the Shoguns responded, and in Nagasaki the Shogun allowed the Catholics entry as they weren’t causing problems- at the start. The Catholics did not cause external problems as they were busy conducting a subterfuge operation to infiltrate and replace the Shogun, which the Jesuits were successful in doing. The Emperor cracked down when he learned of this along with Intelligence that that region was being used as a staging ground for a Portuguese conquest which never came due to the crackdown itself. In the case of Lanka, Missionaries came as traders and would scout out the island for weak points, relaying the information to the Portugese Navy who conducted a direct invasion. They first hit Colombo to attract Sri Lankan armies then hit Devi Nuwara (near Matara) and laid waste to in order to divert the armies from Colombo to the south, in doing so weakening the Colombo defenses and sacking it. @@NarasimhaDiyasena The European entry into Asia, commencing with the Portuguese in the 16th century, was driven by two principal factors, namely the aim of colonizing Asian countries for purpose of trade and exploitation of natural resources, and converting the inhabitants of these lands to Christianity. The Portuguese had as one of its primary aims the propagation of the Christian faith in the newly ‘discovered’ lands of Asia, including Sri Lanka (called ‘ Ceilao’ by the Portuguese) and the realization of this aim was accompanied by steps taken to suppress wherever possible all other religions extant principally Buddhism. The Portuguese destroyed Buddhist Temples wherever they found them and forbade the practice of Buddhism. It was the era that is more accurately referred to as the Portuguese Inquisition which took place in all Asian colonies of the Portuguese Empire. In Goa, India aghast by the local traditions followed by Hindus, the Portuguese were angered by the locals following a religion other than Christianity and ordered all temples within the colony to be shut; this marked the beginning of the bloody Goan inquisition that comprised of gross human right violations and mass executions of the local Hindu, Jew and Muslim populations. The Goa Inquisition was not an act of colonizers attempting to take control of the economic activities of Goa. It was a well-planned deliberate exercise to convert the religious beliefs of the indigenous people of Goa to Roman Catholicism of the Catholic Church in Rome. The philosopher Voltaire wrote these famous lines: “Goa is sadly famous for its inquisition, which is contrary to humanity as much as to commerce. The Portuguese monks deluded us into believing that the Indian populace was worshipping the Devil, while it is they who served him.”

Sri Lanka's Debt to King Anawrahta of Burma In 1069, King Vijayabahu I of Ceylon (then called Sinhale) asked King Anawrahta of Burma for aid against the Chola invaders from Tamil country. Anawrahta sent ships of supplies in aid of Buddhist Ceylon. In 1071, King Vijayabahu who had defeated the Cholas asked King Anawrahta for scriptures and monks. The Chola invasions had left the original home of Theravada Buddhism with so few monks that it was hard to convene a chapter and make valid ordinations. King Anawrahta sent the monks and scriptures, and a white elephant as a present for King Vijayabahu. The Burmese monks ordained or re-ordained the entire clergy of the island. In return, the Sinhalese King gave a replica of the Buddha Tooth of which Sri Lanka (then called Sinhale) was the proud possessor. The replica was then enshrined in the Lawkananda Pagoda in Pagan. Sri Lanka has been a Buddhist-majority country since the time of the Buddha. There were a couple of short periods when Buddhism was overtaken by resurgent Hindu movements. The Portuguese, the Dutch and the British proselytised only in coastal regions of the island, but the Kingdom of Kandy remained solidly Buddhist. Ironically, the last few kings of Kandy were Hindu in their private lives, but even they had to represent themselves as Buddhists in public, to their subjects.

Reparations is another issue that must be dealt with. However attractive it is to forget the dark side of the crimes of the Conquistadors the victims and their descendants still carry the memories of repression, genocide and plunder in Portuguese colonies. Time for accountability and payment of compensation for the damage done during the colonial era.
The historian Paul E. Peiris observes: " They i.e. Portuguese, found in Ceylon a contented race, and a fairly prosperous country .. and it is melancholy to reflect that they succeeded in producing nothing but chaos. Out of a long list of high - born Hidalgos whom Portugal sent to Ceylon, it is difficult to point to one name as that of an enlightened statesman and high - principled administrator. No stately fabric remains as compensating for that religious fanaticism to which ample witness is borne by the devastated ruins of those lovely structures which the piety of generations had strewn broadcast over the country Their bequest to the Dutch was a colony of half -castes, a failing agriculture, a depopulated country, and a miserable and ill - conditioned people They had in Ceylon an opportunity almost unique in the experience of European nations in the East, but their moral fibre had proved unequal to the occasion.
Sinhalese and Buddhism are inextricably linked. The Sinhalese believe that only if Buddhism is protected, the Sinhalese and Sri Lanka will be protected. Therefore, any sacrifice is made to protect Buddhism. Because of this, Buddhist monks are highly respected in Sri Lanka. Sri Lankan tradition for thousands of years is that the kingship of the country belongs only to the person who owns and protects the tooth of the Buddha. Even today, Sri Lankans appoint only a Buddhist who can protect the Buddhist religion as the President of the country. When Sri Lanka was a colony, the British government negotiated with the Buddhist monks and promised an agreement to protect the Lord Buddha's tooth. Despite that agreement, the tooth of the Buddha was secretly hidden during the entire colonial period.

Kirthi sri rajasinghas time there were monks in Sri lanka but not fully ordained monks. And only 20 monks were fully ordained by Thai monks. And after all we 93% of sinhalese are therawada buddhists now ..only 6% sinhalese are christians.
It’s a misconception that Hinduism is an organized religion. The more accurate term for it is sanatan dharma, the collective Dharmic paths of which there are many. People have the freedom to explore and choose their own path as all lead to enlightenment if properly practiced. Although, it’s well known that Ravana was a great devotee of Shiva. It must have at least been known to them through thousands of years of contact with the mainland.
It is a laughable when someone says Hinduism Jainism, Hindu is civilization and Jain is part of this civilization. Lord Buddha gave preaching to those seeking for answers but never call it a religion, the word religion, ism or महजबcame and belongs to Abrahamic scholars and system. There is no translation of religion available in Any of Bharatiya language including Singhli language. But world of Abrahamic religions don’t accept it and are trying from last 200 or maybe 300 plus years to label Hindu+ism Jain+ism and so on to creat trouble between all Bharatiya civilizations or Astha ( आस्था ) Christian Missionary and Islamic scholars are putting lots of effort through NGO,s to invent some historical Myths ( मिथ्या is an Sanskrit word means Lie ) to break all Bharatiya आस्था (Astha no translation available) to attract them to their their belief system. Ancient Bharatiya system is not based on Belief system like Abrahamic religions, but is based on self seeking. 🙏🏻

You said, "in 1796, the Dutch were defeated by the British and they surrendered their colonies to them", Actually this needs to be qualified somewhat. The Netherlands had surrendered to the French in the Napoleonic Wars. As a result, in International Law, sovereignty over Dutch Ceylon had passed, arguably, de jure, from the internationally recognised Republic of the Seven United Netherlands to the internationally unrecognised "Kingdom of Holland". The latter was a puppet entity of the Napoleonic, French Empire. As a result de facto sovereignty over Dutch Ceylon passed from the Netherlands to France. However, the French were not physically on the island. The British in India did not wait for the French to arrive, and invaded and conquered Dutch Ceylon before the French arrived to take over. Johan van Angelbeek, the Dutch (de facto French) governor who was still in Galle, the capital of Dutch Ceylon, offered only token resistance before capitulating. Eventually Great Britain and its allies won the Napoleonic Wars. By the terms of the Treaty of Amiens of 1802, France formally ceded Ceylon to the United Kingdom of Great Britain. So, in International Law, the British took over Ceylon, not from the Netherlands, but from the France. A British Crown Colony was declared over the former Dutch territories in coastal Ceylon in 1795. from then until 1802, British rule remained de facto only, but became recognised internationally as a British colony only in 1802. The Dutch civilians who chose to remain in Ceylon, together with the Burghers who were of mixed-race, willingly became British subjects and even left the Dutch Reformed Church in droves, to worship in the Anglican Church or were baptised as Catholics. It must be remembered that from 1802 to 1815, there were two sovereign countries in Ceylon. They were the United Kingdom in its coastal Crown Colony and the independent Kingdom of Kandy in the central highlands.
But the Dutch governor surrendered the keys of the Colombo Fort only after the Dutch stadtholder, who was in exile in Britain wrote a letter to him ordering to surrender to the British. The letter which is now known as the "Kew Letter" because the stadtholder wrote it from the Kew Palace.
Check on Wili about BudhaGhosha- He is a Telugu Brahmin set up to come to Srilanka and steal the original Sinhala Buddhist Texte and destroyed it. The details of the Mahavamsa account cannot readily be verified; while it is generally regarded by Western scholars as having been embellished with legendary events (such as the hiding of Buddhaghosa's text by the gods), in the absence of contradictory evidence it is assumed to be generally accurate.[16] While the Mahavamsa claims that Buddhaghosa was born in northern India near Bodh Gaya, the epilogues to his commentaries make reference to only one location in India as being a place of at least temporary residence: Kanchi in southern India.[7] Some scholars thus conclude (among them Oskar von Hinüber and Polwatte Buddhadatta Thera) that Buddhaghosa was actually born in Amaravati, Andhra Pradesh[19] and was relocated in later biographies to give him closer ties to the region of the Buddha.[7] The Buddhaghosuppatti, a later biographical text, is generally regarded by Western scholars as being legend rather than history.[20] It adds to the Mahavamsa tale certain details, such as the identity of Buddhaghosa's parents and his village, as well as several dramatic episodes, such as the conversion of Buddhaghosa's father and Buddhaghosa's role in deciding a legal case.[21] It also explains the eventual loss of the Sinhala originals that Buddhaghosa worked from in creating his Pali commentaries by claiming that Buddhaghosa collected and burnt the original manuscripts once his work was completed.[22]
Yes and no. Not all Sinhala original scripts were given to him as some monks were always suspicious of him given his background. Some originals and their entire copies were kept around the nation. Agree with the rest.

Buddhism is a great philosophy very helpful to all mankind to conduct their lives peacefully and successfully. However, since 1948 it is being sold in Sri Lanka as a tribal religion full of senseless but habit forming rituals initiated by a team of self-appointed , team of crooks on yellow robe, calling themselves head monks, teaming up with politicians for mutual benefit. They both are vying for power and money and use the religion to hoodwink, command and control the unsuspecting people. For 75 years, they robbed the country left and right, and in order to strengthen their survival, religion was tied to the country's constitution . The result is a total disaster. Today, Sri Lankans are leaving the country in millions. Undernourished, they have become the poorest in Asia. Country's sky high foreign debt in defaulted. There is no end to the sufferings of the people, who are continued to be kept poor, in order to sell the religion.
To Speak as you do ,it meant, wars of religions won't stop tomorrow. To be proud of something, it's not a quality valuable. ( There's selfishness behind. )

There are few things about the introduction here. The story of Vijaya is a story only. No historical archeological evidence available to prove it but mahavamsa tells this story. Kuweni is not a Tamil queen but a yaksha tribal queen. Sri Lanka has had a very long history before this incident and there are so many archeological evidences found to prove it by now. Evidence to prove that authentic Buddhism was there established even before the arrival of Ven Mahendra (Mahinda) was also found by now. But Mahendra Thero made it an official event to accept the Hinayan tradition from India sent by Emperor Asoka as the religion of Seehela(Ceylon), today’s Sri Lanka. Early Buddhism in Sri Lanka had been there in Deshaye bhasha (Prakrit language) which might have been so much similar to what Siddhartha Gautama Buddha spoke. Letters even were somewhat similar to Brahmin letters. Prakrit got developed towards Sanskrit. Yet later Hinayan Buddhism was expressed in Pali which is an arbitrary language found only in the written form. That’s how today’s Theravada scriptures moved away from real Buddhist philosophy while many of the Mahayana scriptures are closer to practical side and to what Buddha actually taught. Most of the present day Sri Lankans do not even know that Buddhism was fully eradicated from the island few times and then it was brought to the island back from Thailand, Myanmar and Cambodia. Certain Vajrayan worship items are being worshipped in SL without knowing that those are originated from Mahayan/Vajrayan Buddhist traditions. (eg: Buddha’s footprint carving image- which is an artifact) 😊

Hello, I'm from Thailand and to me Sri Lanka is always our close related in Buddhism.
First Buddhism did greatest prosper in Sri Lanka while slowly declined in India.
Then our ancestry, Siam adopted Buddhism from Sri Lanka as Lankawamsa
Lastly when Buddhism in Lanka was declining after invasions by western colonizer, Lanka retrieved the lineage back from Siam as Siamwamsa / Upaliwamsa.
We are related via Buddhism. I love you Sri Lanka.

Portugese only last 50 years in Sri Lanka, and out of the 6,000 total invaders only a few hundred survived- a disastrous defeat to the Portugese

Sri Lanka's Debt to King Anawrahta of Burma
In 1069, King Vijayabahu I of Ceylon (then called Sinhale) asked King Anawrahta of Burma for aid against the Chola invaders from Tamil country.

This is great work. Buddhists the world over are starved of Buddhism related Historical content. This area has been monopolized by the Western media and their acolytes in former European colonies. The Indians are challenging the West over the distortion of history to suit the Euro - Christian agenda. This has gone on unchallenged ever since the print media started. Not anymore. You are doing a valuable service. Earlier we were forced fed with Western colonial propaganda on how good their belief systems were and how evil or savage the Dharmic religions were. You have now broken their insane monopoly. They are now at the receiving end of accusations, ridicule and humiliation. Tit for Tat is the only language they understand. Keep up the good work.
@@senakaweeraratna741 Thanks. I am humbled by your comment and thanks for the article. I have gone through this comprehensive document, which provides new insights into the entire episode. Colonisation was a painful period for humanity.
@@BodhisattvaTravels Portugal has a huge moral responsibility to account for the Portuguese Inquisition conducted in Goa, Ceylon, and the rest of the colonies in the Portuguese Empire in Asia. Reparations is another issue that must be dealt with. However attractive it is to forget the dark side of the crimes of the Conquistadors
the victims and their descendants still carry the memories of repression, genocide and plunder in Portuguese colonies.

Few things are wrong..
No facts to say that ancient hinduism was practiced..it was clear to say brahminism was there..but largely people were worshipping natural things..not any particular organized religion.
Tripitaka was written in Matale Alu wihara..not in anuradhapura.
King Wimala dharma suriya invited burmese king to provide monks but no monks came here from mynmar .

But world of Abrahamic religions don’t accept it and are trying from last 200 or maybe 300 plus years to label Hindu+ism Jain+ism and so on to creat trouble between all Bharatiya civilizations or Astha ( आस्था )
Christian Missionary and Islamic scholars are putting lots of effort through NGO,s to invent some historical Myths ( मिथ्या is an Sanskrit word means Lie ) to break all Bharatiya आस्था (Astha no translation available) to attract them to their their belief system.
Ancient Bharatiya system is not based on Belief system like Abrahamic religions, but is based on self seeking. 🙏🏻

what about the Bhikhunis?
During the 16 th century Portuguese attacked Kerala ( An Indian state ) province like Kochi,Malabar & Travancore.I think they might have been attacked Buddhist monasteries also.In Alapuzha district in Kerala , Archaeological department found a local Buddha diety named " Karumadi Kuttan" from a Christian Church.I think the place named Aroor in Alapuzha district. So it is a clear evidence that during 16 th & 17 th century Buddhism also prevailed in Kerala ( history written by the Brahmins denying the claim ).In Alapuzha & Kollam district lots of other "Theravada " Buddhist shrines found from Hindu temple also.( Which is under the custody of archaeological department ).
Moreover in Kerala there are lots of places named with "palli " ( local name means non Hindu devotional place ) like Pallipuram, Ayini palli,Pallikkavu,Pallipparambu,Ayyan Pallikkavu. These places are not related with any Christian or Muslim church. In Sri Sankara University of Kalady, Kerala there are researches carrying over Buddhist study. I am concluding with a statement that , once Kerala was a great centre of Buddhism👃
Buddhism is the only religion which gives equality to all the followers , if u work hard u too can become a Buddha , no caste. Creed , rich or poor or gender discrimination, one can reason , we believe in karma n compassion

Thanks for the valauble input !!
Buddhist religion is the excellent religion than anyother religion.Thank you video.

There is a place called Mahendra ghat in Patna (Patliputra), it is said that prince Mahendra was seen off by King Ashoka in his journey to Srilanka.
Check on Wili about BudhaGhosha- He is a Telugu Brahmin set up to come to Srilanka and steal the original Sinhala Buddhist Texte and destroyed it. The details of the Mahavamsa account cannot readily be verified; while it is generally regarded by Western scholars as having been embellished with legendary events (such as the hiding of Buddhaghosa's text by the gods), in the absence of contradictory evidence it is assumed to be generally accurate.[16] While the Mahavamsa claims that Buddhaghosa was born in northern India near Bodh Gaya, the epilogues to his commentaries make reference to only one location in India as being a place of at least temporary residence: Kanchi in southern India.[7] Some scholars thus conclude (among them Oskar von Hinüber and Polwatte Buddhadatta Thera) that Buddhaghosa was actually born in Amaravati, Andhra Pradesh[19] and was relocated in later biographies to give him closer ties to the region of the Buddha.[7]
The Buddhaghosuppatti, a later biographical text, is generally regarded by Western scholars as being legend rather than history.[20] It adds to the Mahavamsa tale certain details, such as the identity of Buddhaghosa's parents and his village, as well as several dramatic episodes, such as the conversion of Buddhaghosa's father and Buddhaghosa's role in deciding a legal case.[21] It also explains the eventual loss of the Sinhala originals that Buddhaghosa worked from in creating his Pali commentaries by claiming that Buddhaghosa collected and burnt the original manuscripts once his work was completed.[22]
Yes and no. Not all Sinhala original scripts were given to him as some monks were always suspicious of him given his background. Some originals and their entire copies were kept around the nation. Agree with the rest.
Long live dhamma. ❤️

Learning about Buddhism and the history of Sri Lanka is my source of courage.
I Admire about you Sir. As a Sri Lankan I bow my head and respect you. Please keep protect this v.clip for future generations. IMPORTANT story to understand our Lord Buddha's era & what happens to Our precious Damma.
This is documentary is wrong. Buddhism was (Theravada) originated in Sri Lanka, not in India
Srilanka become Buddhist because of us ancient Bengals ...
Couldn’t agree more, monks participating in politics (like in recent 2022 people protests) is not as per the dharmic rule.
world best religion .buddhism❤️..☸️☸️☸️☸️🇱🇰🇱🇰🇱🇰
To Speak as you do ,it meant, wars of religions won't stop tomorrow.
To be proud of something, it's not a quality valuable. ( There's selfishness behind. )
Buddhism is a part Hinduism. It's not Dhamma it is Dharma. Hinduism is real Dharma. It's way of life to right path. Hindu Dharma symbols "Om" used in Buddhism. Concept like Dharma, karma, maksha (nirvana), sansar, samadhi, Yoga, dhyana, Mantra. Buddha itself hindu his knowledge base is Hinduism that's you can see repetitive in Buddhism. Buddha given new concept worshipping god based on his knowledge and experience like Adi shankaracharya, Madva charya, Ramanuja , Basaveshwar, many more..
I came across that considerable number of Sri Lankans are having this idea that Buddha was born and lived in Sri Lanka. Here i'm saying to the world that this happened because of few lunatic buddhist monks in this country.
It does NOT matter where the Buddha is from. Even if he's from Ethiopia or Somalia we should follow his Dhamma.
These morons does not follow Dhamma instead they are so interested about Buddha's citizenship.
"Pańńawathō ayan dhammo, nãyan dhammo duppańńassãthi" - Anuruddha Sutta
(This Dhamma is for the wise, not for the unwise)
Some of Nepalis saying Buddha was born in our country, some of Indians saying Buddha enlightened in our country and some of Sri Lankans are saying Buddha is from Sri Lanka.
These are direct result of "avijja" or "avidya" (ignorance). It is hard to believe that they will ever comprehend the Dhamma.
yes as a srilankan i can say i deal with some blind srilankan who believe a buddhism without proper knowledge those srilankan believes buddha from srilanka i agree with your opinion =sorry for my english
The Buddha visited Sri Lanka more than 3 time during his life time. You have completely omitted that FACT
Your videos are so very important. The history of the Dhamma must be remembered.
Love Buddhism ☸️🇮🇳
We Sri Lankans owe emperor Ashoka and arahat Mahinda generations after generations for giving us the greatest gift of Dhamma. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Buddhist country forever 🇱🇰☸️
