When looking for power for your layout, don;t overlook the Marx [sometimes marked 'Allstate'] #1859 150 Watt transformer. You can often find this monster in good condition for less than $50!
Yes. The only difference you will notice is the Marc's transformer has a lower maximum voltage at around 16 volts instead of the 18 volts for a typical Lionel. Therefore the top speed will be a bit slower than with a Lionel power pack.
I use 8 gauge uninsulated copper as my common bus wire. Feeder wires to the track are 12-16 gauge. For accessories, it depends upon the power drain - for something with a motor like the MPC drawbridge, I use heavier gauge but for LED signals I use surplus 4 or 5 conductor telephone cable. Stranded provides better continuity and less resistance, especially for moving parts (like wire from pickup rollers).
I have two Marx trains one is Allstate smoker and it runs slower that the non smoker 1960s Marx. I think I need a bigger transformer for the Smoke train
I have the same one i just bought was in with a bunch of lionel stuff a big piece of the case is gone and the knob was changed, but it checks out ok everything works if anyone needs the transformer or for parts let me know i don't collect Marx stuff
Nice!
I didn't know they made this one.
I always learn something new from your videos.
Thanks.
Thanks for watching!
Great video

Will this 1859.trsnsformer will work on Lionel marx 3 rail tubular track

How volts does the off position read
What gauge wire do you recommend for the track and accessories? which is better: solid or starnded?

The smoke unit will draw a little more power.

Can they be serviced like the Lionel ZW? Really like all the videos. You make em’, I will watch em’.
The design is much simpler than the ZW, so anyone who is comfortable enough with electricity to crack one open should be able to service it.
