  • A video I made for my Civics students that I decided to upload to UA-cam. It gives a general introductory overview of the current political spectrum. Keep in mind for historical purposes political ideologies between the major parties in the United States have changed over time.

I think libertarians do belong on the right half of the political spectrum, despite being socially liberal on some issues.
Truthfully, the libertarian social position is more laissez-faire than liberal, and the differences between these social attitudes becomes more apparent as liberals increasingly use state power to prosecute culture wars. Take gay marriage and abortion as examples. Libertarians want the government uninvolved in these issues, which overlaps with liberals to the extent that they believe that both should be legal. However, once liberals push for government subsidies for abortion clinics, mandated abortion coverage for health insurance, and forcing Jack Phillips to bake the cake for a gay wedding, libertarians are off the train. Opposition to the growth of the state is not the same as social liberalism, it’s a separate disposition that sometimes overlaps with the left and sometimes overlaps with the right.
Libertarianism is economic “far-right” and socially split.
