  • In the Bhagavad Gita, Sri Krishna has said that the mind has to be fixed on Him. He says :
    मय्येव मन आधत्स्व मयि बुद्धिं निवेशय |
    निवसिष्यसि मय्येव अत ऊर्ध्वं न संशय: || 12. 8||
mayy eva mana ādhatsva mayi buddhiṁ niveśhaya
nivasiṣhyasi mayy eva ata ūrdhvaṁ na sanśhayaḥ
Meaning, Fix your mind on Me alone and surrender your intellect to Me. There upon, you will always live in Me. Of this, there is no doubt.
Whosoever happens to be your chosen deity, fix your mind on that deity alone. Let your intellect enter into that deity.
If you want to attach your mind to God, you have to detach it from other objects…from the objects of the senses.
The easiest way for you to do it is Japa. Repeat the name of your chosen deity. Think of His various divine Leelas. As you keep practicing this, you will slowly start developing a taste for it.
With practice and perseverance, you will be able to keep your mind in God. Study the Bhagavad Gita and ponder over it's teachings.
Study the life and teachings of Sri Ramakrishna. You will get answers to your questions in the inspiring life and teachings of this Great Master.
In this section of the UA-cam video Swami Sarvapriyananda discusses a question asked by a follower of Sri Ramakrishna during one of their deep discussions. The question, which was about fixing the mind on God, is considered fundamental in spiritual life. Sri Ramakrishna's answer, given in simple sentences, covers the entire range of spiritual practice. He suggests singing the glories of God, practicing meditation in a secluded location, and engaging in philosophical and spiritual discrimination. These practices represent the paths of Bhakti (devotion), Raj Yoga (meditation), and Jnana Yoga (knowledge), respectively. Sri Ramakrishna's answers may seem ordinary, but they hold the key to realizing God.

First you have to realize that this world will never satisfy you and only causes suffering. Even pleasure turns into suffering. Once you understand it, you will turn inwards and seek god and once you realize God, you love God with all your heart and mind

@@sudarshansharma9807i dont dispassion is the answer. You do dispassion because you want to avoid the worldly things because you are frustrated with it. In a sense vairagya is also a selfish approach towards protecting yourself. The real thing is thinking and realizing that we are not this body and the senses . We have to be equipose and equinamte keeping that in mind and try to see god in everyone. That is correct approach according to me

The beauty of the question and the answer is that Master M did not ask any question afterwards to Sri Ramakrishna till his mahasamadhi. Now we can understand the profoundness of the query. Even Swami Vivekananda used to say about Master M that he has attained the highest by asking one doubt and others including him are having so many doubts..

I like the third point. As soon as a thought, promoting Raga or Dvesha, enters the mind we need to use our discerning power and destroy that thought using the reasoning of permanent over temporary. I, on the other hand, secretly nurse such thoughts until they become so powerful that it starts dominating the mind. One can compare such thoughts with small time local goons whom we ignore and they turn into Dawood Ibrahims.

The shop is left behind but you deliberately recall the picture and the taste of the sweet. You repeatedly do the same. Now that thought grows stronger and enters your mind without your permission. Gradually you lose the control and turn back to go to the shop and buy what you are not supposed to eat. The power of the desire does not allow you to rationally think of the harm it will cause until you gobble up couple of the pieces. How can I fix my mind on God ?.....Ask GOD in a way that is natural for you and you will receive an answer in a way that is natural to you ....don't try to work it out with cleverness or technique and definitely do not outsource your intelligence to someone else who claims to know. Proxy relationships are poor substitutes for a 1on1 with God.....Simply enjoy the fact that God's mind is forever fixed on you and in you as you and then nothing need be fixed.

How could I know that the yearning i'm feeling to realize god is a genuine one and not a temporary whim? When I could expect a guru to enter into my life to guide me through the path that I've been seeking so that I could get rid past this cycle of death and birth? Is it too much to expect for one who knows nothing of spirituality apart from what he's been reading in books?I know Swami Sarvapriyananda ji is too busy a monk to reply to questions from a layman like I'm,yet asking if there is anyone listening...

    • @omanshsharma6796
      @omanshsharma6796 2 місяці тому +23

I shall try to answer to the best of my ability
I don't think there is anything as non genuine yearning for God, Shri Krishna, in gita, describes the types of bhaktas:
Arta: The distressed devotee who seeks God's grace to alleviate pain and sorrow.
Jijnasu: The seeker of knowledge who feels ignorant and yearns for divine wisdom.
Artharthi: The devotee who desires material gains and prays for wealth and prosperity.
Jnani: The wise devotee who has realized the true nature of the Self and seeks union with the Divine.
So even if you are seeking God for material reasons, you are a devotee. That's alright, the goal of life is to move higher and higher, none of us are born perfect, if we were perfect we wouldn't have been born.
As far as Guru is concerned, he/she comes when the time is ripe. I don't remember the exact quotation but Swamiji in Raja Yoga said that if the disciple is ready, Guru won't be in wanting (i.e. Guru will arrive). So till that kind of eligibility comes, you may consider your favourite deity as your Guru, pray to him/her with sincerity, even if the prayers are mechanical it's alright, remember, we have to move higher gradually. Take up rule of Japa, do Japa of the name of God, it does not require any kind of initiation. Try to make a rule of certain number of Japas (Japas are usually counted in terms of number of malas, 1 mala equates to repetition 108 times), you may choose to do it once or twice a day... just try to be regular. Before eating, offer the food to your chosen deity mentally. Throughout the day, apart from japa, try to practice remembrance of God whenever possible, it can be through the name of God or through form of God, I have heard that one should focus on the name of God first (just focusing on sound would do), the name eventually evokes the form of God. Have faith on your chosen deity, rest assured all will come in time. Even the slightest of yearning, nay, thought of God won't arise in mind if there were not the grace of God. So please know that you already have been grace, now just take baby steps having complete faith in your chosen deity. Pray to God with sincerity, tears in eyes if possible. When time is ripe your chosen deity in form of a human guru shall come, till then pray to God in this way, "O Lord, I don't know anything, I don't have any devotion or knowledge... how will I attain you if you don't teach me to do so? please either come in form of guru or let me know what is to be known to reach you." (you get the sentiment).
Name of God in and of itself in completely capable of leading to God realisation, so don't think that anything is in lacking. The final stage of naam jap is constant repetition, like the ticking of clock, if you attain to that state through practice God realisation will come. So you have the method, try practicing it, rest leave on God.
Try to love your chosen deity, consider him/her your friend or mother or father or child or beloved... whatever relation you feel the strongest. I think it was Swami Vivekananda, who said, "Goal of spirituality is humanizing the relationship with divine and divinising the relationship with humans (i.e. loving them knowing them to be manifestations of God)." Apart from that I strongly recommend that you read the Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna, it contains all that is required for God realisation and more.
May God Bless you, all the best!! just don't be discouraged, be patient, you already have all you need!!
PS: if you know hindi I found the satsang of Swami Premananda (www.youtube.com/@ShriHitRadhaKripa) ,apart from lectures of Swami Sarvapriyananda ofc, to be extremely helpful. It depends on the tilt of mind, my answer has been from more of a bhakti perspective since that is the best I know. If you have a knack for Gyana (Jnana) or Raja Yoga, checkout Complete works of Swami Vivekananda (pdf is available online)
PS2: AND OFC THE LECTURES OF SWAMI SARVAPRIYANANDA ON THE GITA AND UPNISHADS ARE WONDERFUL!!

do not assume all the burden is on you.
there is something called grace - when you take a step towards god, god takes a step, or perhaps 10 steps, towards you.
when you put the time, energy, devotion, and attention into your practice, help will come to you.
but for now, you don't need a guru to move in the direction you want; you can start a daily meditation practice. even starting small, just a few minutes a day, will help. once established, you can increase the time as you are ready.
patanjali's yoga sutras have excellent wisdom on how to transform oneself, to move towards liberation.
make small gradual steps when you are ready, don't overdo it and burn yourself out with big sudden changes.
when you've truly decided in your heart that liberation is what you want, nothing will be able to stop you.
      🙏

The mind could never be permently fixed on God, so a bit of a silly question, mind just thinks thought, and God is not mind or thought, the nearest one can get to God in a permanent manner is consciousness, more pacificly superconciosness or Samadhi, which is a permanent state, beyond mind, when mind is transcended, from reaching maximum concentration, from the practice od Dharana, Dhyana, or Mantra, or any other means. But Samadhi is the only permement state of anything, so to have ones mind permently on God is not possible, but to sit in superconciosness, which is in the image of God is possible, and this is surely what was meant by the question asked.

There's no god. The whole nature, the all living being are god. You are the god. For man ,his own mind is the real god. God is not outside. It's inside. To realize this truth, we have to follow, practice the truth ,discoverd by Buddha. That's, the path of, morality, mindfullness, and wisdom. This is the path of Anapana and Vipassana meditation. This is the way of liberation from the unending cycle of birth and death.

    devotee:
Why does the mind waver violently with worldly thoughts and desires? Why does it refuse to calm down in meditation?
    Reply of Shri Datta Swami:
First of all, you must know that meditation is not the real path to attain the grace of the Lord. Meditation means fixing your mind on a form or formless God. You can imagine only anything, which is in the realm of the space-time. This means that you can meditate upon only a part or total creation and not upon the creator. God is not the creation and is also not in the creation. If God is creation, you are also God and there is no need of any meditation. If God is in the creation, all the changes in the creation must affect the God. Kapila says ‘Asangohyayam purushash’, which means that God is not associated with creation.
Gita also says the same (Nachaaham Teshu...). God enters a small item of the creation and pervades all over that item for your service, which is only the proven love. Did you meditate upon your parents or wife or children? No, because you have real love to them. You serve them directly and not their photos or some other inert objects keeping as their models. You serve them in their human forms. They are different from their human bodies as souls. But you are serving the soul through the human body.
Similarly the Lord enters a human body and available for your true love. You must take pains to detect him. Have you not taken pains to search a suitable girl for marriage to show your true love? Take the help of the divine knowledge. Vedas and Gita have given the procedure to detect the human incarnation. To cut your bonds with the family members, who are also, human beings, another human form of God is only the equal competitor. Formless objects, statues and photos cannot compete. Your body is also a human form.
The bond with money is only for the human forms. If you develop the bond with human incarnation, which is Lord Himself called as Sadguru, He will bless you with divine knowledge, which alone can cut your worldly bonds. Since you have not fully realized, your attachment persists. The attachment is violent only due to the high intensity of ignorance, which is nothing but mis-interpreted and twisted wrong knowledge. Such ignorance can disappear only by the light of true divine knowledge.
The source of that knowledge is Sadguru. Therefore, you must catch a Sadguru and hear His divine knowledge constantly. You must clarify your doubts at every stage. When you are fully clarified, the ignorance disappears like the darkness in the presence of sunlight. Thus, the root cause is only ignorance and root remedy is only true knowledge. When the ignorance is associated with egoism and jealousy, it is like diabetes associated with hypertension and kidney-failure. Your case is not serious because you are with ignorance only. It will be easy to treat you.

As per my experience, the way to fix one's mind on God happens when one has tried all that one could to make oneself happy and failed at it, so the only option left then is God.
Ramakrishna's answer is theoretical not practical.
That is why one reads that unless one has suffered through the dualities of life one can't possibly aim for non duality.

@@lazyyogin333 'The word was god' is not in the Genesis but in the S. John gospel.
Om is even not Deity itself. Let me explain.
When we recite this mantra we can say it is 3 letters and the sound connected to them. But then there is the deep meaning of this mantra. The human language is too imperfect to explain this especially in modern dialects. It is impossible to define this meaning because any definition is a limitation and OM has no limits. So you cannot say what OM 's meaning is, you can say just what it is NOT. It has NO limits, it is NOT an object, it is NOT a sound, it is NOT a thought, it has NO relations with whatsoever. It is NON DUAL, so it can be said it is has many parts but in the same time it has no parts. 3 matras A-U-M are not the ultimate reality. Turiya is amatra, without part, avyavaharya, unmanifested, prapancha- upashama, perfectly non dual This is OM-KARA, beyond the 3 matras.

There's nothing called "God" or anything even remotely equivalent in Indic context. It's basically a Germanic term which means something like "all good" - 'good' and 'god' are basically two forms of the same word root, just like come/came or began/begin/begun.
"Fixing mind on God" isn't remotely comparable to "samadhi" or even "dhyana".
Trying to translate your narratives from one context to another the apparent strangeness is pretty easily visible - on one hand you talk of "fixing the mind on God" and on the other you talk of "no mind".
Just throw the word "God" away and speak directly in Sanskritic vocabulary, with clear references to yogic practices. Whitewashing it misleads a whole lot of genuine seekers.

Why do you need to fix your mind on anything, what is God? but a creation of man. It's a concept, what you really need to do is align your karma with dharma, which unfortunately very few understand.

    • @kaushik._.327

good but faulty concept. if God is only a creation of man, that would also mean that man itself is his own creator. if that is so, why is man unable to explain the natural processes that he claims is made by him.
we must indeed align our karma with dharma, but not in the sense for ourselves, only for the supreme.
It is stated in the Bhagavad Gita, that whatever we do we must do for God(check the description of the same video for exact shloka).
Read the Bhagavad Gita thoroughly and also the Ashtavakra Gita, to understand this concept clearly. this is no hate comment, I just wanted to clear your concept about the supreme. your idea is good, but for the wrong purpose.
a man's desire is unending, as man is part and parcel of the supreme itself and hence always wants something better than he already has. hence, doing our karma for ourselves is useless, as we will never be satisfied. do whatever you do and leave the expectations of fruits of actions to the Supreme. May Radha be with you. Shri Radhe🙏. Hari Om Tat Sat🙏.
