My name is Zara Beth (zeezee25 on tiktok) and I post videos about disability, neurodiversity and what its like living with Tourette's Syndrome, Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) and a chronic illness called Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS). Tourette's syndrome is a neurological condition causing involuntary movements called tics.
I use my social media (TikTok, UA-cam and Instagram) to advocate and raise awareness for my conditions and show what it is like living with a disability as a neurodivergent person.
I am also autistic and share my sensory struggles along with my experiences with mental health disorders.
I show what its like having a disability and the accomodations I have to help my daily life. I am also an ambulatory wheelchair user showing my life using mobility aids and how symptoms change from day to day!
I am also a musician with a popular song called "She's Mine" available on all streaming services - I wrote, produced, mixed and mastered all my songs myself! I am also an artist and a writer. I love reading and I'm currently writing a novel and a book about my life!

For anyone who thinks someone would use a wheelchair just for the heck of it or for attention, you’ve never had to use one. They’re HARD to use. Especially on your arms/hands. People really take walking for granted.

Yep. I remember this one time we went to a kind of science museum, and in the outdoors area there was a sort of obstacle course for wheelchairs with slopes, gates, tight spaces, and cobblestone. Can confirm, it is difficult to go about in a wheelchair at least when you're not used to it. I remember getting stuck in a few bits.

@@elpelicanojiji This is the kind of well-meaning question abled people are constantly asking disabled people. I mean no offense, but if it were that easy to solve our medical issues, they would be solved. People only end up being disabled longterm when their issues are hard/impossible to solve, to the point that a team of doctors and physical therapists can't figure out how to make them better. Also, the fact that you used 1 mile one day and 2 miles the next day cracks me up because I once walked 2 miles and couldn't walk for 9 months. Walking 1 mile is super dangerous for me. I guess it's just interesting to see how differently disabled and abled people conceptualize distance. Again, I mean no hate/disrespect. Just trying to communicate how most disabled people feel when these kinds of comments are made.

It’s happened to me, but luckily I had family with me to see it happen and stop them.
I can’t self propel much so mainly have someone to help me when I’m out.
Went to a shop, and wheeled myself a little way to look at something more interesting, because it was on the handles I didn’t really even feel it, until my dad and seen and shouted which made me turn.
They didn’t manage to take it, as my dad saw, and unfortunately the police didn’t do anything because the person didn’t manage to actually take it, and stated they were “just making sure it wasn’t rubbing on the wheels” so there was no real evidence.

I am always so paranoid of this whenever I use my wheelchair. What I do is I will put my backpack on the chair with the zipper facing my back, so it's on 'backwards', and then I take the waist strap and clasp it around the back of my chair. That way even if someone tried to grab my bag and run, they wouldn't be able to get it off my chair.

I fell down a flight of uneven concrete stairs when I was 17. I was holding my baby sister at the time, so I wasn't paying attention to how I fell, only on protecting her, so when I landed, I wound up on top of my left ankle and my knee was splayed out in a weird direction. I didn't realize anything was wrong for around 2 years. Turns out when I fell, I broke my foot, damaged the supporting tendons in my ankle, and damaged the meniscus in my knee. I went to physical therapy for several months, but they basically told me that it wasn't going to get any better and that I could only salvage what was left. Nowadays, I walk with a cane and am about to get a wheelchair due to the amount of pain that I'm in, so I'm excited to be seeing videos of other ambulatory wheelchair users! Especially the comments on this video, so many people sharing in similar situations where on their good days they can walk and on their bad days they can't. I’m having to consider becoming an ambulatory wheelchair user in the next few years. I have chronic pain that mostly acts up when I am standing, and sitting once I’m in pain only causes a temporary break for the pain right now, and it returns when I stand up again (the longer I stand, the more pain I’m in). The pain will get so bad that it will feel like my back, feet, and hips are broken at the same time. I want to go to med school when I finish college (thankfully my college I doesn’t require much standing), and then go into residency that will require a lot of standing. As a result a wheelchair would greatly help me, and I’ve used one before a few times by renting them at zoos and museums when I’ve gone to help combat the pain (when I first tried that, the lack of pain was almost life changing). I’m glad more ambulatory users are sharing these things on social media! There is so much misunderstanding about it. People think just because we don’t ALWAYS need to be in a wheelchair, that we must not need it at all. Not all wheelchair users are paralyzed and there are so many reasons someone might need a wheelchair part-time. I use one for fatigue, chronic pain, and if I’m anticipating a lot of walking. Most of the time I walk using leg braces, but I do use my wheelchair occasionally. I’m actually looking into getting a more custom wheelchair (My current one is kind of a nightmare to use because I’ve had it for years and it’s not very custom), so if anyone has any advice, I’d love to hear it!

I'm an ambulatory wheelchair user too. My Ehlers-Danlos flareups combined with my other health issues have been limiting me a lot over the last few years. I usually use a cane when I go out on the day to day (quick stops at the grocery store or the doctor) but shopping or going out for extended period of time has become out of question. My wheelchair is giving me back life and fun. I can spend my whole day at the mall again (not all stores since wheelchair accessibility is still sparse, but still) and go to the zoo or the museum and on adventures with my family. And it's all with a Canadian Tire 150$ chair. Is it comfortable? Not really. Is it ergonomic on my bad arm joints? No. But it's so much better than the alternative of not doing anything. I hope to eventually be able to afford a good, quality, wheelchair which will keep me going for years, but until then, I'm just happy to have more freedom again.

Zara Beth, I was so happy when I started watching your videos because you educated me on abulatory wheelchair use. I have disabilities that can affect me in some similar ways as it affects you. At times I will also have extreme fatigue and debilitating physical and menatl health symptoms and this prevents me from going out often. There are many times where I cant even leave the house to buy groceries and necessities and on days like this I am unable to really do things like dishes, preparing food, any everyday activity. This also keeps me from many social interactions, family gatherings for holiday days and birthdays, going out in the woods or hike up a mountain, hang out with friends (I dont have many since my disability can get in the way of hanging out and even talking on the phone at times). Thank you so very much for everything you do. Now I will be able to approach my medical team regarding getting my own wheelchair. The hope of being able to live a "normal" life again is back in full swing. I'm tired of missing out on so much

Get a seamstress to add some snap tabs on the sides of the bottom seam of your jacket so you can leave it full length when standing, but can fold the bottom inside and snap the tabs to hold the bottom about the height of your hips and keep from sitting on the end and creating pressure points that causes bruises. The mods are not expensive or difficult and it makes fashion much more wheelchair adaptable.

I have to use a wheelchair when I walk longer distances, i get bullied in school sometimes because of it. I bring it to school because there’s different buildings so it’s a long walk to lessons most the time. People always stare and make comments when I stand up from it but it’s like I’m not parallysed 😂

Suggestions on the chair! Really curious what type you have and what exactly you look for. I love the angle of the wheels and how much easier it seems to make it! Most of my friends in wheelchairs have electric ones, but I need to need self propelling and, I had a super cheap one that worked not badly, but it wasn’t fit for me at all. Then I got a drive one that at least I could measure for, but it is hell to push! Can’t take myself anywhere at all.

If you can't have caffeine and are at a cafe you can order a steamer. It's essentially a latte but without the espresso. (So milk and flavoring) if you're dairy free they usually have options for that. Oat milk is the non dairy go to where I work for us. (Except for when I use coconut milk to make knock off Pina coladas). You can also usually get whipped cream or other toppings to go with it. Never feel like you can't enjoy yourself if you have dietary restrictions. There's often ways to work with it! (My list of dietary restrictions is hella long. I have become VERY creative when out and about) there's also often apple juice available and you can ask them to steam it and add cinnamon and caramel sauce to it for another fun treat!
And I hope with summer around the corner that some of your pain eases. In my house we often find that the weather greatly impacts our chronic pain (I have rhumatoid arthritis, my sis has scoliosis, my mom was in a bad car accident that wrecked her jaw and back, my dad also has RA, my grandma has arthritis from her cancer. We got a full house of shit-sometimes literally with my lactose intolerance and my sister's IBS lol) I hope the same goes for other where warmer weather allows you greater mobility. But not so hot that wearing mobility aids becomes disgusting.

I had to be in a wheelchair just for a week as my knee stopped swelling and I can't imagine having to deal with it and the stupid people that think just because your legs work means you're using a wheelchair without a disability. I couldn't physically get up but the amount of people that looked at me like I was disgusting for getting special treatment was mad. I had people literally huff at me because we went to a museum when it was raining in London (the line was doubled up and went outside the museum gates) and me and my family were allowed to slip the line*.
*not completely but so we weren't at the back in the rain bc when we got there we had already been waiting about 30 minutes in the rain in the line. Ppl were just wanting to go in so they didn't have to be in the rain not actually to visit the museum.
