Dune (titled onscreen as Dune: Part One) is a 2021 American epic science fiction film directed by Denis Villeneuve with a screenplay by Jon Spaihts, Villeneuve, and Eric Roth. It is the first of a planned two-part adaptation of the 1965 novel of the same name by Frank Herbert, primarily covering the first half of the book, and is the second film adaptation of the novel following David Lynch's 1984 film. Set in the far future, it follows Paul Atreides, as he and his family, the noble House Atreides, are thrust into a war for the dangerous desert planet Arrakis, between the native Fremen people and the enemy invaders, the House Harkonnen. The film stars an ensemble cast including Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Zendaya, David Dastmalchian, Chang Chen, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Charlotte Rampling, Jason Momoa, and Javier Bardem.

nah man. this was a perfect film. yeah, you can complain about how it was just a first part and needed more, but it was beautiful. it took the material that is... just... much, and made it more than simply consumable. it was inspiring and among the most beautiful movies ive ever seen. a lot of your negative criticisms are judging this as a complete film and not a part of a series. i can already feel this as something that will be seen as far exceeding the lotr trilogy

    • @spectre111
      @spectre111 2 роки тому +8

In the past it was a matter of casting necessity. Paul is supposed to be like 14 when the book starts and like 20 when the book ends. That would be hard to pull off with live action, so they split the difference and try to find an actor that's in the middle. Chalamet seems to be doing a good job of playing brilliant young prodigy who is slowly losing his naivety.

This film really is a marvellously accurate portrayal of the book. I've been reading Dune in readiness for the movie.
Keeping the Emperor off screen is a great move, in my opinion. Just like the original Star Wars, it adds to the mystique of this figure who rules over everything.

    • @thefishking7582
      @thefishking7582 2 роки тому +10

Being an accurate portrayal of the book is what made this flop for me. It was way too long with nothing really happening half the time. I love the Dune books, but I don't think they really are adaptable to the screen in any way that could be considered exciting.
You mentioned Star Wars. A lot of this movie felt like the boring Trade Federation Embargo peace talks in the Galactic Senate.

I would argue strongly that the miniseries was a far closer and more accurate portrayal of the books with this version cutting out major characters and plot points for simple and not overly exciting action scenes. Having the Emperor off screen is an interesting choice but at the same time seeing his reasons and his plots and WHY he sides with the Haarkonen's is a big part of the book

I remember the news about the filming of this film. The director was complaining about the studio not letting them shoot parts 1 and 2 back to back. So maybe not everyone initially knew this would be a two parter but a lot of people did, maybe that's why they left it out of the marketing, idk, doesn't seem like a GREAT excuse though. They should really make it more obvious.

Well, I got the second half. This is Paul's story viewed from his perspective. He starts dutiful, privileged, and semi-naive. He lives in the grandiosity of the Empire. By the end of the first half and thru the second half, Paul is becoming more disconnected from the everyday, more mystical but just as privileged in his assuming the Fremen way. The action and drama happen around him, but he flows thru it toward his destiny. On one level it is a power trip, on the other, it is a cautionary tale of power.

It’s funny because even the stuff they changed worked and still made sense for their characters. There are a few scenes I wish they kept, and felt they could’ve. At least the conservatory scene and maybe the dimmer part scene. But my main gripe is how the attack played out since in the book, they made a big deal about the emperor hiding his involvement with the trap. And that the sardukar were supposed to be dressed in Harkonen armor. But they are changes that aren’t a big deal, and I can over look them.

(I'm pretty sure they didn't filme it though) My only complaints about content was that they didn't keep the longer debate between Paul and Mohiam about the sisterhoods goals and that they underutilized both Yueh and Piter. I love the portrayal of the Sardokar and how Denis really hit hard on the various forms of language used in the Dune universe. They don’t have to say it outright, but the Sardokar communicate in their own “battle language”, while House Aetredis use of sign language is finally depicted to ramp up the paranoid tension.
It was also genius NOT to show the Guild Navigators and the FTL effects. It leaves more to the imagination, while what was done with the Mentats to highlight their “human computer” functions was a very clever way to get the point across.

In my personal opinion this movie is amazing.
one thing that you pointed out about the actor who played Paul and how he portrayed him being very average that's exactly what his character is in the book. My main issue with the David Lynch one is just that the characters KEEP fucking doing pointless inner-monologues. No, I am not complaining about exposition, but they _really_ go heavy on "tell, don't show" and you have scenes of characters describing shit that is happening or they're doing, half of that time it felt like the Miramax cut of "The Thief and the Cobber", you know, the one Doug reviewed where they completely miss the point that it's silent storytelling and add inner-monologues that mean nothing and feel like they need to SAY what they're feeling instead of just showing it.

Agreed re the Harkonnens. I suspect they didn't want to show the Baron's sexual proclivities because of potential offensiveness, and also the makeup for Stellan Skarsgard was so onerous that they probably couldn't put him onscreen all that much without Skarsgard threatening to kill them. Which gets to a fundamental issue: doing the Baron with prosthetics was a bad idea. Skarsgard's fantastic in the role and I wish we saw as much of him as we did in the miniseries, but clearly, the prosthetics imposed limits on giving us good villains.

Haven't seen this new one yet (really excited tho), but I think that Dune was a bizarre and complicated enough sci-fi story that it needs time to sink in. If you read the book, you'll understand what I'm talking about. Dune isn't like Star Wars where there's a bunch of action and just simple enough concepts for the general public to get a grasp on. While there is action in Dune, it focuses on more complex ideas a lot more, it takes some getting used to. That's kinda why I think splitting the new one into two parts is a good idea.

It is something they made up for this adaptation, so we have no way of knowing what it might mean. In the books, the worms are described as giving off a churning or rumbling sound and a lambent glow from deep within from furnace-like chemical processes. There are similar scenes to this in the later books, but with another character thousands of years later who can seemingly communicate with the worms, but this was never a thing with Paul. They did probably mean for it to signify some type of foreshadowing though, even if it might might irk the nit-pickiest fans, like myself.

If you haven't read the books I can see why you didn't like it. As someone who read the books it seems to skip on things I wouldn't have and add a bit where they could've trimmed a bit like I wish they explained why they don't use energy based weapons and that Paul was training to be a mentat as well as his mother training him to be a bene gesserit. As they are both very important in his survival and overall success. This could've given the doctor a bit more character not much but a bit more. Honestly I didn't find issue with the second half because I wasn't expecting it to have an end it felt like the middle of the second act and I was ok with that this was because I knew way more had to come. If they need to tack on 30 min to this movie to give the doctor a bit more time and explain a little more I wouldn't care. This would've been a better miniseries with episodes an hour long each and like 6 episodes but it's a movie so it is what it is.

Finally got around to watching the movie (not in the theatre, unfortunately) and it's a beautiful movie, gorgeous in its size and scope, and... That's it.
Like Doug said the first half was REALLY good. I never read the books or watched other adaptations so I wasn't as excited for the movie, but the first half made me excited, and it got me interested in the second half. The second half is also good, but not that good, and didn't get me too invested for the second movie. I'll probably watch it when it comes out because it will clearly be a good quality film, but I won't be too disappointed if it doesn't come out either.
The biggest strength of the movie is it's cinematography, makes the movie(s) worth it just to look at the incredible worlds. But the movie did get me interested in the books though. Maybe reading the books will change my level of anticipation of the second part.
(One thing I think is the movie's biggest flaw is that there needs to be more Oscar Isaac and Rebecca Ferguson and less Zendaya. One or two of those flashforward scenes was fine but it was getting to be too much in the second half. Focusing a bit more on the family would make people more invested in the tragedy that befalls them and be interested in seeing how they would rise up again.)

This movie blew me away. I'm not easy to surprise and, even though I didn't expect much from it, I think its timing is perfext. It's true that if you expect a big action Star Wars movie, it's not that, and it was never meant to be, and that's why I love it. It's about the characters and their progression, not about the plot. I bought the book just after watching it and can't wait for part 2.

    If you're not a Dune fan, I don't know why you'd see a Dune movie, period. :)
I liked it a lot, but I didn't love it. I would say it's the best Dune adaptation so far, but there's not a lot of competition.
I will say one thing I think the screenplay nailed: Giving the viewers the proper perspective on the Bene Gesserit. It's very important to understand that the Bene Gesserit *planted* those myths on Arrakis. Paul is the messiah because they *made* him the messiah through the myths they planted.
There's one other thing the movie does really well, but it's a spoiler, so I won't go into it.
The thing I didn't like was where it ended. I think they could've ended it like 15 minutes later just to get Paul settled in with the Fremen.
The slo-mo actually worked for me. I think it worked well with what the focus of those scenes actually was. It wasn't the action. The focus was him living out things he'd seen in his dreams.

Thought the world building was very cool. Visual everything was really fantastic. Most characters I thought were interesting. However, the entire third act board me so much with how slow the pacing became, and by that point in the story, I was very lost about what was going on.

As a viewer that knows the story but haven't read it in a long time, I've enjoyed the film.
It's a good thing they've cast a young actor, but he lacks emotion display. He looks blasé throughout the film, except in the tent scene. Even his father looks more alive, displaying the small cracks beneath his mask of total control. Special mention to the actress playing Jessica, who makes a terrific job.
The OST is good and memorable, although too much oriented on "ambience". Can be seen as good or bad depending on the audience. Silence usage is on the spot: it's rare enough in today's films to be highlighted.
Some exposure scenes are somewhat "cliché". You could guess the incoming problem in the harvester inspection, miles away. However all the "exposure" scenes blend in nicely and don't feel forced in or weird, like some other movies.
The feeling of threat is somewhat mild, which is a disappointment. Only a few scenes manage to carry a true urgency or make you hold your breath.
Overall, even with its few flaws, it's a good film, rather contemplative than action-packed: people should be aware of that when seeing any movie from Denis Villeneuve.
