  • A train driver and worker have died overnight after a train traveling from Sydney to Melbourne came off the tracks.
The incident happened near Wallan, north of Melbourne, with 153 passengers on board.
At least 12 people were taken to hospital for treatment with authorities saying it's a miracle that there weren't more deaths.
The train was 12 hours from Sydney when the track buckled, shifting four carriages at least 10 metres off their normal trajectory.
All passengers were extracted from the train, and emergency services established a crisis centre at a nearby service station.
The Transport Safety Bureau has established a crime scene.

'Typical derailment, typical derailment'....Shocking comment. Then the worst repeated comment (insult): "We are very fortunate, very fortunate".
This should never happen. What caused it? That's all these muppets should be concerned about, plus the murdered victims.

The railroad builders should have listened to Isambard Kingdom Brunel, but no. They wanted to save some quid with a narrower gauge. Now we are stuck with an unsafe standard.

Glenn Howden the derailment occurred because the down end points at the Donnybrook loop were set in reverse and the signal showed full speed rather than slow to diverge. The standard gauge has absolutely nothing to do with the derailment. It was a signal fault. Good on ya for trying to look intelligent though.

If anyone has ever been on the xpt from Bris to Sydney, they know the sections around Grafton are dodgy. All of NSW public trains are useless.
