The first term is mathematically undefined so it can never be 0 hence also any subsequent calculation is false. If you plot a function it will show no zero point.
It has no solution over the set of real numbers; but, over the set of complex numbers, it does have. Also, since 1 is not a root of the given equation, "a" must be some other number (in fact, a complex root). Thus, a-1 is a non-zero number. And as shown in the video, this was part of the manipulation process.
