Guinevere, Morgan le Fey and Nimue, the mystical lady of the lake have been cast as heroins, virtuous women and wicked femme fatals by the many people who have retold the legend of King Arthur over 1500 years. I'll sketch the highlights of the story, galloping past the oft retold battles and quests of the knights of the round table and focusing on the many parts women had to play. Then take a look at the way the legend morphed through the passage of time and some of the reverberation the inhabitants of the Camelot have had on real history.

A strange twist on the mermaid mythology… instead of a fishtail, the women now have swords to identify their true nature. Are these sword-gifting women who possess a sword, a graphic phallic symbol, or better yet, the EXCALIBUR SWORD the real power behind the sword? She gifts her hero with a sword - a phallic symbol - which also speaks to the fact that it is the feminine who controls the male, thru sexuality, giving prowess to go to war and the most important power, that of a king maker. Once again, this myth speaks to the meaning of Gaia or earth mother, who controls nature. Guinevere also means “land or earth”. When the king or the male hero learns of the power of the feminine - it drives him mad - and once again, it is the woman who have the power to heal. Merlin understood all this and this is how he controlled Arthur. The King Arthur and Knights of the RoundTable is a myth with layers of magical and spiritual symbols of the journey of the soul, vis a vis the Feminine Power or the Gaian initiation.

Perhaps Britain may find herself more helpless given the fact that Queen Elizabeth ll has failed The Church of England since now towards the end of of her long reign, we now see a Catholic Prime Minister, divorce is now very ok. The First and Second World Wars were bad but every Unknown Soldier is buried with a Cross. For Isaiah to have been sawed in half, let's face it, anything goes. And Mary Stewart’s Arthurian series, which was written in the 70’s and 80’s and were the first books since TH White’s “The Once and Future King” to deal with the Arthurian legend. It was because of popularity of those books that “Excalibur” was made. When I think of Elaine floating down to Camelot in her boat I automatically think of Anne of Green Gables when Anne gets into the leaky boat on the Lake of Shining Waters to be Elaine and her boat springs a big leak.

If there was one time I could go back to, it would be that Golden Age of Avalon, of Chivalry, Kindness, Compassionate Virtues, Morality and Courage. We desperately need those valuable Arthurian morals and virtues today. It is fast coming back. I highly believe all the great Arthurian figures did exist. All stories have foundation in fact and in truth. Thank you for doing this. We really appreciate it.

"The Mists of Avalon" is a fantastic mini-series (and yes, I've read the book, too, and yes, I've since become aware of what a horrible person the author was). The story is great, the sets and costumes are gorgeous, and the soundtrack is AMAZING. Not just for its inclusion of "The Mystic's Dream" by Loreena McKennitt, but also for the wonderful score and the haunting voice of Aeone.
My other favorite take on the Arthurian legends has to be the musical "Queens of Avalon" by Heather Dale (Minor spoilers ahead). In that, Guinevere and Morgan Le Fay meet as eight-year-olds on Avalon, brought there for ten summers to learn magic from the Lady of the Lake. As a child, Morgan is shy and cautious while Guinevere is an outgoing tomboy. They vow to be "sisters forever". As they age into the roles fated for them, they begin to mirror each other's childhood selves: Guinevere wants nothing more than to be a devoted wife but is trapped in a loveless marriage as her husband is more preoccupied with being king and chasing glory. Morgan, meanwhile, bitter at Arthur's very existence since it caused her father's death and her mother to push her aside, projects the image of "a strong woman who doesn't need a man and will take what she wants". She constantly pressures Guinevere to leave Arthur because "he isn't giving you what you deserve" and threatens to harm him via Mordred in order to "free" Guinevere. And after the tale's traditional ending goes down, Guinevere confronts Morgan about it: "Did I ever ask you once to save me, or indicate that I needed saving? I CHOSE THIS!"
Not only is the show a great take on the traditional legends, but it also has some amazing commentary on both ancient and modern roles expected of women. Plus, it's a musical by Heather Dale; the soundtrack slaps.

Nicely done! I'm a huge Marion Zimmer Bradley fan, and I love the Avalon series of books. If all you want is King Arthur, "The Mists of Avalon" is the one to read. It's told from the pov of the women, Igraine, Viviane (Lady of Avalon) and chiefly, Morgaine. It's also a good explanation of Druids and paganism. The real conflict is the encroachment of Christianity on the Druids and pagan beliefs of the people. "Mists" and "Ravens of Avalon", which tells of Queen Boudica's uprising against the Romans, are probably my favorites. MZB also wrote "The Firebrand", which is Troy, from the viewpoint of Kassandra, priestess and princess of the doomed city.✌🏻🐱

I highly suggest reading "The Mystery of the Grail: Initiation and Magic in the Quest for the Spirit," by Julius Evola which summarizes the whole point of the very convoluted Arthurian literature (the quest for the Holy Grail - being the Initiation, and the Hero - who fulfills the Davidic Covenant/Davidic King), and will sit at the 13th seat that's been symbolically left open at the roundtable, awaiting his arrival.
It ties everything all together and makes it all seems much more meaningful and spiritual. Wish I'd read it a long time ago. 😂

It was a much more realistic telling of the story. Did you read Cornwell’s Grail Quest series? It’s very good although it’s rather violent and gory.
