Shane Burcaw (he/him) is the author of several award-winning books about disability. He is the President of a nonprofit organization called Laughing At My Nightmare, and a renowned public speaker who has performed across the country at places such as Harvard University, The University of Florida, The University of Connecticut, Princeton University, and many more.
Hannah Burcaw (she/her) graduated from Carleton College, where she studied Sociology and Anthropology. She films and edits the “Squirmy and Grubs” vlog, which has over 800,000 subscribers on UA-cam. Hannah has spoken at prestigious universities and Fortune 500 companies alike about the realities of ableism. On her popular Instagram account, she advocates for acceptance of all people and works to improve the way society thinks about disability.
Shane and Hannah have been together for over four years. They got married in September of 2020 in the midst of a global pandemic in their backyard, with their officiant conducting the ceremony via Zoom. Their interabled relationship often confuses people, because much of society still cannot fathom people with disabilities being involved in loving, intimate relationships. Anyone who watches these episodes will quickly see their relationship is just as “normal” as any other. Sure, Hannah helps Shane use the bathroom and brush his teeth, but those activities do not detract from the emotional, intellectual, and physical connection they experience together.

No one wanted her? Where was that? I don’t know why I continue to be amazed when I come across statements like that. I hope your sister never had to hear that. I believe one of the main problems that needs to be fixed if we actually want to create a better world is the proprietorial attitudes towards children. They do not belong to us, we are custodians if we are lucky but that brings responsibility, not ownership. It takes a village to grow a fully integrated human being who acts positively with consideration of all life, rather than reacting against fear and grasping for status.
It takes a certain privilege to be as loving and honest as this couple always seem to be, but we are not free until everyone is free. We cannot fix everything in a day, and our tools are always limited. We cannot be told, only taught by example. These people are a beacon amongst a barrage of bullshit. So refreshing, so humbling, something most of us desperately need.

True story! I adopted our little from DFPS and back then (17yrs ago) we totally weren't prepared for the amount of issues that eventually cropped up. It hasn't been perfect though I don't regret it. We had a lot of surprises along the way with how much her adoptive status and how she landed in foster affected her (we ignorantly believed her being so tiny would result in barely any memories of neglect) as human instincts are shaped a lot in infancy. It's not an easy process, and post adoptive service should definitely be a part of any plan so you have access to support system, but definitely don't regret having my daughter be my baby and now she is an adult!

That is great to hear! My husband and I adopted our daughters from foster care a year ago, they are 14 and 16 so not small children. There are definitely (as people are mentioning) many challenges that come with being an adoptive parent, but it’s also very rewarding. Would you consider older children? As terrible as the circumstances that lead to children needing to be adopted are, the alternative (aging out of foster care with no permanent healthy family) is much worse. Permanence and stability in a healthy family are wonderful gifts to give children who have come from very hard places through no fault of their own.

    • @JustFamilyThings

We foster teens - primarily those who identify as LGBTQI - and we’re part of a special program that is often the final family home before kids age out of the system. We help our older teens learn how to register for college, manage a budget, find housing, shop, cook …. And then we have to turn them loose into a very big world.
I deeply appreciate parents like yourselves who are adopting older kids. The need for love and support doesn’t end at 18. ♥️

    What an exciting adventure!
I’ve been blind and have had mobility issues most of my adult life and I fostered two teenagers (15-17 and 12-15) and then a baby (3 months to 15 years) and loved it.
I’m regularly in touch with the first two who have gone on to be great adults and parents.
Sadly not really in touch with the last one since they blackmailed me after I’d willingly given them a few thousand pounds, but they demanded even more and I don’t give in to bullies.
It can be fun and terrifying at the same time, but I feel privileged to have had the chance of being a parent when I didn’t want to pass on my genetically wonky genes.

Yay for you two figuring out how to get your family.
Here are Unasked for Thoughts from an Adoptee (directed to anyone reading this. I don't assume what Squirmy and Grubbs know about things): Please know that Adoption is a Trauma no matter what the child's story is. Even from birth, Baby is taken away from all that they know (even at birth, they know the gait, smell, and voice of the person they grew inside of) into the arms of people they don't know. This does neurologically affect babies. Babies are hard-wired to look for the person they came from and when they time and time again try to find that person, their bodies are put into a state of stress. This stress becomes a Preverbal trauma (trauma that happens before the age of remembering trauma). Preverbal Trauma affects people in ways that are hard for them to notice much less work out because they don't remember the trauma that happened to them. The baby eventually figures out that their adopted parents will be there for them and are the ones to rely on.
If you want to adopt, please research how adoption (or surrogacy) even at the youngest of ages affect children and how best to support your child knowing that no adoption happens without trauma(s) -Even for Adopted from Birth Kids. -every kid.

    • @therese4089
      @therese4089 2 роки тому +1

Not every adoptee has trauma from adoption. There are plenty of people who feel their situation was win-win-win, don't have attachment issues etc. Adoptees are not monolithic, and adoptees who had a good experience are much less likely to post on forums talking about their experiences, because it tends not to be the place/relevant to them. Same with adoption support groups, why would someone go there and talk about how wonderful their life is? It's just not appropriate.
Of course Adoption Trauma exists, and today there is much more support for everyone involved which is good, and the potential for relinquishment trauma should be acknowledged. But it is NOT inevitable as you've presented it.

I wish you the very best. Especially wish you good health and abounding love. Hoping that you get your dream. Bless you
