    Well done, nice work, and I like the sense of humour with the substitute baby riding in the cradle, it makes all the difference, knowing that a "baby " is using it.

    you can make it go for longer by putting a simple pulley system on the weight. for example if you want it to go for twice as long make it so you have the cable come down from the spool, then go around a single pulley attached to the weight and then return up to an anchor on the frame.

    Nice project. I'm looking forward to seeing additional improvements that might extend the running time. what do you think about extending one of the vertical arms upwards of the fulcrum and adding a counterweight atop? you might be able to regulate how much counterweight is being applied by raising or lowering the weight in respect to the fulcrum. Have you tried that? Thumbs up , thanks for sharing.

    Thanks for sharing this interesting project! I'm a bit curious whether adding more weight to the bottom (the bob), in addition to the simulated baby, would have any effect on negating the effects of air resistance or if it will simply cause more friction within the pivot point bearings.

    Scott would you consider doing one to sell. Also wondering about the safety issues. When a crib rocks and should the baby get up, how will the baby stay safe with the crib rocking? Even if the crib is not rocking when baby gets up, there may be a possibility that the baby would try to climb out and possibly fall into the wheel assembly. Interested in hearing your comments. Thanks. Je

      +Jerry Eisner It would need a fair amount of refinement before I would feel comfortable putting it to use. The mechanism can be more efficient, pinch points need to be blocked, etc. You could probably build something in that would trip when the basic swing is disturbed (i.e. significant activity from our passenger) and prevent from the escapement from releasing. Overall efficiency gains need to come first though . . .

    This is pretty amazing. There's something really beautiful about the way you've done it. Instead of the gearing you could put the bolt axis directly on the escapement using 1/6 bolt diameter and go twice as long, but would require supporting the free end of the bolt. I would put lacquer or maybe wood glue on the remaining wood contact points to see if the harder surface makes it more efficient. If it helped , then I would epoxy aluminum cut from cans onto the contact points. Does the escapement have a name? I was looking for one like this that drives only 1 size. How long did the project take to reach this point?

      I don't know which category it would fall under but it took about 2 weeks to get to this point.

    Watch the pendulum during the time lapse part at 3:44.Interesting effect that occurs when the frame rate isn't synchronised with a rotating motion. The same effect causes CRTs to look like they are flickering when filmed. Not sure If it has a name.

    What about incorporating a simple wind up clock spring? And that would be simple to scale up to larger weight(s).

    Can an escapement wheel be made out of a circular saw blade? I've been contemplating building a weight powered rotisserie spit. My intuition tells me the saw blade would have to be one with a negative tooth rake, or at least a zero rake. Do you agree?

      It certainly seems like the right shape, not sure on the tooth angle, you could probably make most blades work with some adjustment.

    A simple arm going up with a pull would allow the weight to start higher resulting in a longer run time.
    I'm not trying to nitpick. it's a great project. Just trying to give ideas.

    You are skilful woodworking person. I'll suggest lighter weight on larger drum, better for bearings.

    Triple the time... Rather than hang the weight from the shaft/spool, run it up and over a pulley attached to a pole or tower. Add a heavier weight and run it trough a block and tackle arrangement with several "parts of line".

      It is a wonderful idea. I was looking for applications of the escapement mechanism in architecture, and your cradle is very inspiring. If you know of any other similar projects or good references, please let me know.

    Easiest way to get more time out of it is an arm and a pulley. Lift that wight 8ft up in the air and it'll run for 90 minutes.

    The author does like to from scratch, ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxbnOKZBE4evMO5V2vroHeCjq6d_MV6wJO shaping and trimming wood from large blocks into fine finished products. As another reviewer mentioned, most projects require a lot of high-dollar equipment that most of us don’t have the room or budget for. But, knowing how to do these things, even if we won’t be able to practise the full stack project, is still great.
