  • In this follow up video, the basics of construction for this escapement mechanism are reviewed. This device was not particularly hard to build and can be simplified beyond what was shown here. In the prior video of this piece, the operation and various parts were identified as simple machines making it ideal as an instructional tool. Possible lessons in physical science concepts may include such concepts as, potential energy, kinetic energy, simple machines, compound machines, mechanical advantage and friction.

      thanks reddiep75, nice to hear you stayed with the channel. Also thanks for reminding me about the information box, I sometimes have to post a video 2 or 3 times before it actually gets published. In some cases the sound may not be right or I'll decide to change something before hitting the publish button so I don't put much effort into what goes into that space. Today I forgot to check it closely before publishing, I went back and changed it a bit and will add more to it over the the next day or two.

    Despite modeling, seems like some things fit and just work better when you put them together and draw it out.
    I like the flywheel, that it's able to constrain the pendulum movement while giving its energy somewhere to go. I like how you used two pulleys on the weight too, that seems to keep it from turning into a pendulum itself.
    Now we just need a Rube Goldberg machine to incorporate this as some sort of time delay haha

    • @reggiep75
      @reggiep75 4 роки тому +2

      This is only a guess, but when I spotted it I thought the tape was put there to reduce friction between 2 pieces where the wood grain is different as there may have been friction issues before the tape was placed.

      Hi Mark, the first thing needed was to get this piece working, now that it does, I have some changes that I want to try to the design that would change or improve it. Some ideas were changing the driving force, length of the pendulum, mass of the flywheel, other options to the flywheel, and other options that can improve its movement. I'd like to do as you suggest and follow the energy flow through the device and show how some of the changes either improve it's operation or have a negative affect.

    Two weeks of hacking finally paid off works like a charm. Lots of variables but kept me busy. Remaining mystery... what is the purpose of all the complex string path?
    Your only comment on the weight is that your turn a 4 lb weight into 2 lbs. Isn't that sort self defeating? Mine runs well on just over 1 pound and with no bearings or bushing and just dropping weight to the side to clear the pendulum
    Great project. Thanks
    Jack

    • @YeanyScience
      @YeanyScience  2 роки тому

      by having the weight lifted by two string I can wrap twice as much string about the crank shaft and it runs twice as long, if I had it lifted by 3 strings I could get 3 time more string around the shaft and it would run 3 times longer, 4 string lifting gets it running four times longer.
