  • The true story of Victor Herman, who immigrated to the Soviet Union c.1930 as a child with his parents. He became a star athlete, but was sent to Siberian work camps when he refused to renounce his American past and identify himself as Russian; he eventually spent 18 years in gulags before being released.
The Gulag was the government agency that administered the main Soviet forced labor camp systems during the Stalin era, from the 1930s until the 1950s.

Thank you for posting this old film. I am so glad the film survived, the music is terrible but the film is still strong. The Victor Herman story should be remade by a modern film maker.

I actually quite like the music, admittedly it’s slightly awkward but it fits well , to me anyway.

My father had a small part in this movie. At about 7:30 the star is running around a track. My dad is the guy holding a stop watch. It's a non speaking part but he's done something that I never did. He was quite happy about it. Greetings from Canada.
