- Part 1/2: Ultimate Mobile Chicken Coop
We're replacing our laying flock of chickens this year, with a fresh new batch that we're hatching ourselves here on the Homestead. The goal for this new batch of egg layers, will be to have them be in a mobile coop that can be moved around the yard / pasture every couple of days, to keep them on fresh grass. It will need to have a coop area to keep them safe at night, and a nesting box for egg collection. The timeline for this build is taking much longer than originally planned, mostly due to weather, and limited availability of some of the build items. For this episode, filming started on 4/2/2020 and ended on 4/18/2020.

Hubby and I were just talking about making one of these for our meat chickens (chubs) it’s still snowing in Northern Michigan and the chubs are almost 2 weeks old. So praying it warms up so we can start building this weekend. thanks for the video..
We love our meat chicken tractor, it's going on it's 4 the season and still just as strong as the day he built it

I was able to special order 4’ hardware cloth through my local farm/home store. Home Depot and Lowe’s should be able to order it as well. Dewalt makes some torx bit sets that I’ve had pretty good luck with. Keep up the great work!
That's what we did. Ordered from Home Depot. It showed "in stock" and would have arrived on April 9th. April 21st now, and it still hasn't arrived. We've making due with what we have for now. Made some adjustments to accommodate.
That 1870's Homestead , yeah I’ve had to make do with 2’ occasionally and it’s a real pain when you have a 4’ opening, lol!
Snap On makes really good torx bits...they carry a lifetime warranty too.
I love this coop I was wondering if y'all share material lists and instructions on how to mimic this? I've seen a lot of similar things in Etsy but this one is great.

I like apex bits.
Robertson screws and bits. You’ll need one bit for life. The one good thing Canada came up with. That and maple syrup.
Even the dewalt bits fray.
I use the first gear on the cheap screws. Even on impact ,makes a diference
How do you find the angles @6:33 for joining that 2x2 flush with the top 2x4?
Do you have the list of materials used? I’d like to try and build this one.
How much would you say this ran you? We used 2x4s on a similar tractor build and it ended up being like $750 when all was said and done. We’re trying to build a second one for not that amount lol!

We had an A frame chicken tractor for years when we lived in town and were limited in the number of hens we couldhave. My husband had the brilliant idea of building the frame out of treated lumber. It was so heavy that I couldn't move it by myself, lol. Even though it was heavy, I loved it! It was so easy to clean up. When we moved to our farm, we had to leave it behind.
That's the time you put wheels on it....checkout EggCartn wheels and lift system....must be under 400 lbs. Otherwise...put it on a wagon (4wheels) so it can be pulled by hand or by a garden tractor. I built the small house on EggCartn and use as a brooder. The big chicken house is built onto running gear trailer that I can pull anywhere...Premier1 Electrick Fence for security.

It's funny you mention those bits. I just bought a few Milwaukee power tools and I've been going through star bits more than I care to admit. I thought it was just me...
Hop on over to the Project Farm channel. He does all sorts of head to head product testing and may have something on the bits. If you can't find anything, suggest it. That's where he gets all his ideas for head to head testing and loves it when viewers suggest particular brands, sizes, whatever.

What are your measurements for the base?
Buy the GRK Torx Bits. Green is t25, and is the most common.
I snagged some Bosch ones on Amazon that so far, a holding up a much better.
Do you happen to have plans of the project. Will be my first wood project and I don’t want mess anything up :(. Wife wants to start raising chickens

What about in the winter months? How will you modify it to close off the wind?
In the winter months they will be moved to my brick house coop. That was always my plan for that to be the winter coop but I am just now getting to execute on it
I want to strap a concrete insulation blanket over mine during the coldest months with it rigged to have sides that can be rolled up according to the weather.

I'm looking to get a chickens, I moved into town and had to leave my coop. Was wondering what size your coop is. I can only have up to 5 hens.
12 feet long, and about 6 feet wide at the bottom.
T-50 staples??? What does everyone have against fence staples. Do it once right and it lasts for years.

Use a impact drill. It will cut down on stripped bits

I've watched quite a few of his videos. I ended up buying some Bosch bits, to finish off the chicken tractor. And they are so tough, I haven't had to toss out a single one yet. amzn.to/3lHbgQa
Might be too late but I'm pretty sure Amazon has the 48 inch hardware cloth... Price might be an issue there though.
I've adjusted since, and changed the build around to support the lack of supplies.
👍🏻 what are the 'floor' dimensions of the base of the tractor and the coop part and how many choices do you think it will handle? Really like this design... Do you plan to go back to status coop for winter or try to use this for winter also?

You have to build something to stop the chickens from sleeping in the nest boxes.
We have a plan for that, hopefully it works. Watch for part 2.
It is time you changed to star bits pal. they give more contact points on each screw. This is my opinion and i am standing by it.
I have changed over. Almost all T-25 screws, with Bosch bits. Those problems are now behind me 😄
Nice coop, I find Robertson’s 2 A better screw design. Philips strip easier
I've slowly been making the switch over to T20 and T25. Much better solution over Philips.

Checkout "CritterFence" ...they have all dimensions...I used black coated for mine.
