Ray Coleman was born in Essington, Pennsylvania, on 3 February 1933. Some 10 years later Ray first picked up the guitar and soon began to play his own versions of hillbilly songs. Ray idolised Bill Haley and was, in fact, known locally as the "Hillbilly version" of Bill Haley. Ray achieved his ambition of appearing with Haley in the late 1940s when they both took part in an all day charity radio show on WPWA Philadephia. There Ray met Rex "Tex" Zario and Haley with his group then known as the Four Aces of Western Swing who spearheaded the 12-hour show as well as acting as MC. Other artists appearing included Shorty Long, Jesse Rogers, Sally Starr and Pee Wee Miller. In 1956 Ray made his first record for Rex Zarios skyrocket records - Fools Dont Care and Toodle-oo-Bamboo. Around this time many country singers turned towards rockabilly and Ray was no exception and following a March 1957 recording session Jukebox Rock n Roll and Rock Chicken Rock were released as Ray Coleman & The Skyrockets on Arcade records. The record was only successful locally. Subsequently Ray recorded many other titles and enjoyed some success as a country singer on Arcade and Arzee Records. Ray died in 1985.
His music sounds so familiar...probability because he lived about 25 miles from me outside of Philly. (especially Rock Chicken Rock). I lived behind the house where Bill Haley and the Comets (Saddlemen) practiced.
