The antifouling project 2/6 - grinding down the rusty keel

  • As always things are not that easy as they seems, first I hand sand down the bow thruster hole and then I sand down the engine leg and the edges of the rudder.
    I thought the keel was a easy job but I was wrong, it is almost impossible to sand down with the sander so I get my old 600W Bosch grinder, 5 grinding discs later I reach my goal and I can then apply some rust converter as the first part in the process.
    IMPORTANT : Do not get the rust converter on the skin !!

    I was going to work on my boat, but then I took a shot of rum every time he said "yeah" and now I'm drunk and I don't know where I am

    Now 6 years later. Did the rust converter and primer work well?

    is there any treatment between rust converter application and the following primer paint, like washing or so?

    • @twiper
      @twiper  10 місяців тому

      The wash before the rust converter is to wash away any salts from the iron surface. According to the Bavaria yard the right way to prep the keel surface is to use a zinc primer called "Zink Powder Paint" in my case I use rust converter as the first coat and then a highly diluted layer of epoxy primer.

      my question was, what did you after rust converter. Did you wash down before you apply epoxy primer or just paint the epoxy primer onto rust converter surface?@@twiper

    Hi Tino, I came across your helpful videos just about right time as I'm about to antifoul my first sailboat ever. The hull is in pretty good condition, but still I'm confused as I don't have an experience with it. I have hard antifouling and small patch of rust on the keel, I'm wondering do I need to go same process as you, or I can do patch priming on the keel? And regarding the hull, is priming mandatory every season or I can sand antifouling and have a new layer on?

    Just remember to use a rust remover for your paint system. If you use epoxy primer, you would need Owatrol CIP instead of normal Owatrol

    What does the boatyard charge per month?

    • @twiper
      @twiper  6 років тому

      In our sailclub it is very cheap to have the boat on land or in the water, it costs 39 US dollars per month. (depends on the boat size) The sailclub is however not the best place for big sailboats due to the long, shallow and narrow inlet and It takes about 3 hours to reach the ocean. But if you can live with the inlet the club is pretty good. Regarding the mast you must also remove it each year.

    Hi what is the name of the rust «eating» stuff you have used on the keel. And how did the keel look the next year. Was the rust back?

    • @twiper
      @twiper  5 років тому

      You can get rust eater (remover) and rust converter, I used the rust converter you can get at biltema : www.biltema.dk/bilpleje/bilvedligehold/rustbeskyttelsesmidler/rustader-2000017147 - check out how the keel looks after a year in this video : ua-cam.com/video/D6JlykYyLn0/v-deo.html

      Over all a good result, but of course hard to grind where the keel is supported and at the bottom of the keel.

    All your videos are very informative. I need to do the same to my iron keel in a couple weeks. Which grinding disc did you find worked best?

    • @twiper
      @twiper  5 років тому +1

      Thanks :) - The grinding disc in the video at 0.55 is effective ua-cam.com/video/RDSPALZCtPM/v-deo.html - I used flap discs first but they are not so effective as the grinding disc. You can also use the flat sanding discs as the ones Mads from "Sail life" uses on his grinder.

    What grit of flap discs did you use Tino? Mines out of the water now and the keel is pretty bad! I need to try and replicate your awesome process ...

    • @twiper
      @twiper  3 роки тому +1

      The flap discs was grit 40

      Thanks Tino. I’ve ground one side off - it’s quite a workout! Did you rub down the rust treatment or just apply the epoxy straight over it?

    • @twiper
      @twiper  3 роки тому +2

      @@TheMagicalArmchair I did apply the primer on the top of the rust treatment. The treatment is to ensure the remaining rust don't evolve under the epoxy primer.

    Hej overvejer en bavaria 32 cruiser fra 2002. Lader til at du kender alle kroge på den. Hvad skal jeg mest være opmærksom på når jeg checker den. Tak 🙂👍🏼

      Jeg har hørt at man skal tjekke omkring kølboltene inde i kabinen ( som jeg ikke gjorde da jeg købte min ) der er noget med at den revner et bestemt sted hvis den har været udsat for en hård grundstødning men man vil nok også kunne se det på kølen udenfor. Også en god ide at være opmærksom på motoren, den skal starte hurtigt og med det samme som en diesel motor skal, hvis den lugter som en gammel bus skal dyserne justeres. Synes ikke jeg hører om Bavaria både med osmose men nok en god ide at kikke efter det. Ved også at Bavaria har en svaghed med ror der kan køre stramt, så tjek hvornår bøsningen har været skiftet. I følge min båd kan en bøsning holde i ca. 10 år. ved normalt brug (fik ny bøsning i 2015 og båden er fra 2004) - men tjek de dyre ting så som motor, rig, sejl, sprayhood, telt, teak, hynder, aptering, varmesystem, luger, forbrugsbatterier. Har set en del både hvor glasset i lugerne er krakkeleret, en rimelig dyr omgang hvis de skal skiftes.

    Your videos are very helpful. Thank you for making them and posting them. I have one request, and I know it's not going to be easy. Throughout your videos, you say 'yeah' many many many times. I realize it is a habit which would be very difficult to break. However, with perseverance, you can do it.
