An amazing thing, rather: some years ago, I had never heard of this work. Then I was reading a book on "The Invisible City of Kitezh," [which I'd also never heard of before], and within no more than two weeks later, Classic King FM played music from this opera. Talk about synchronicity!

It is a lovely piece of music!!! Pity the sync'ing' of the audio and video did not come out perfectly...
I saw this opera performed in 1989 at the Bolshoy theater in Moscow with Svetlanov conducting. The sets were fabulous and added so much to the performance. The scenes would gradually change by moving giant curtains of beautiful colors that hung from the ceiling. This drab black set and costumes ruins this beautiful opera for me. What were they thinking?
shame there are no english subtitles. the sets don't look in keeping with the magic setting of the plot of the opera? i love the overture!

I agree about the sets
Perhaps you don't realize that the company staging the production is the theatre on Sardinia! It's not Teatro alla Scala. But even if it had the resources of La Scala, there's nothing in the music that requires a "fairy-tale" production.
We don't read the Iliad in Homeric Greek to get the flavor of the myth related by the poem. Why should we require the sets and costumes of an opera to correspond to the time in which the action is set? Do we require that Bach be performed only on period instruments? Must we, then, reject Glenn Gould's performance of the Goldberg Variations because he uses a piano?

The issue for you is that this production is not in the "fairy-tale'' style that typifies many productions of such operas at the Bolshoi and other Russian opera theatres. You have every right to call the "mise en scène lamentable", whereas another may consider it "formidable." Neither of you is "correct"; for everyone has a right to their own opinion. And as one does not dispute taste, the taste of those Italians is as correct as that of anyone else.
But it's rather unfair to compare this production with one at Moscow's Bolshoi. Thousands of roubles can be spent on a production at the Bolshoi. It's Russia's national theatre. The Teatro lirico di Cagliari is the theatre on the island of Sardinia! It's hardly the Teatro alla Scala and it certainly lacks the resources and traditions of the Bolshoi.
La différence entre le Covid 19 et la bobo-itude de toutes ces mises en scène intello c'est que pour la Covid, on trouvera peut-être un jour le remède. Pour le moment fermons les yeux et apprécions les chanteurs, l'orchestre, et cette très belle musique. Agree absolutely. It's a pity that the work is so demanding of its soprano lead - Fevronia, and that the subject, unlike that of the Golden Cockerel, isn't so readily accessible to audiences familiar with the operas of Puccini and Verdi. Those who like Wagner's operas, Parsifal especially, ought to be capable of investing the intellectual and emotional energy Kitezh requires for the greatest enjoyment. Though there are many memorable melodies, this is by no means "elevator music."
Most unfortunate in this video recording is the absence of English-language subtitles. So few people have Russian that for this opera to win the audience it deserves subtitles are essential. The diction in this version, btw, is excellent.
The Mariinsky Opera staged a far less traditional production in Mariinsky II, the newer theatre just across the canal from the house many people know. It's a knock-out. Though it has strikingly interesting production values and features superb singing I won't compare it with this production. You should see & hear it for yourselves. Perhaps it will be recorded for release on DVD or BlueRay. Perhaps it will be streamed on Mariinsky TV. Look for it.

да. не ожидал,что в Большом допустят такаго исполнения, а мы ещё критиковали Калинину за дикцию,а Райкова за вокал. Да они просто вкликие певцы, не говоря уже о Светланове.
Калинина звучала чудесно, соловушка))) На мой взгляд, необыкновенно чистая дикция, хрустальное горло))) Страшные люди эти ценители оперы 🤗
Для того чтобы слушать видео не надо. Достаточно ушей и аудиозаписи
pampiliong Смотря какая задача. В данном случае целью размещения была видеозапись оперного спектакля. Не самая лучшая, согласна, но другой на тот момент и не было. На classic-online.ru сейчас семь вариантов "Китежа", включая и эту постановку, и нидерландскую Чернякова, и аудио...Кстати, там и высказаться можно компетентно))))) . По существу.
Жаль, что те, кто оставляет отзывы по-русски, жалуются на эту постановку. Разве среди русских, кто смотрят эту запись, нет никого кроме меня, кто может смотреть нетрадиционную постановку, получить удовольствие и оставить положительный, или хотя бы нейтральный, отзыв! Как будто зрители застряли в XIX-ом - начале ХХ-ого века. Мне почти 80 лет и хотя мне приятно смотреть традиционную постановку, я отнюдь не против этой постановки. Очень хотелось бы прочитать комментарии тех из вас, которые посмотрят бельгийскую постановку "Сказки о царе Салтане" на UA-cam.
@@tserkoslavjanskij что с них возьмешь, они небось в театре последний раз были в конце 80-х. Да и тогда большинство из них не особо что понимали, просто были моложе на 30 лет ,потому и хотят, чтобы было так, как тогда, когда они были полны энергии .
Видел черняковского Салтана и понял, что после этой постановки уже вряд ли смогу смотреть его в традиционной версии . Вот взять даже самый финал " Много я чудес встречал . А такого не видал " - там у Римского-Корсакова совсем не выдающаяся музыка . Создается ощущение ,что он просто не знал как закончить оперу. Но Черняков находит применение даже такой музыке - она оттеняет трагическую развязку ,когда аутист Гвидон долбится в стену , желая вернуться в воображаемое царство 2 акта.
А в постановке Астраханского театра Гришка Кутерьма симпатию вызывает, а не отвращение) Но массовка там посильнее выглядит.

A fine production. If you can’t do a realistic sets then an abstract production is a good solution. However the unsynchronized sound is a deal breaker for me; it makes it unwatchable. Too bad.

Prokofiev went through the hands of Rimsky-Korsakov he didn’t think much of Rimsky’s teaching methods but he clapped TIL his hands were sore at the premiere of this opera.

Легенды не получилось, темно и мрачно.Что означают перевёрнутые лодки вначале? Почему Феврония стучит по земле в 3 действии, что сие означает? Это какой-то только режиссёру понятный символ? Почему не сделать больше световых эффектов в сцене в лесу, в последней сцене, раз это легенда? Моногарова поёт и играет хорошо, но режиссёрская работа слабая.
Корма перевёрнутых лодок превращается в купол храма, это же гениальная находка! Они как бы уже намечают жизнь в отражении.
love the singers/orchestra--but there's nothing magical about the set pieces--its supposed to a be magic opera oh well.
That’s modern staging for you. It’s all about the lowest common dominator, beauty or anything positive is not allowed has to be ugly gross disgusting with lots of sexual perversion thrown in for good measure and usually has nothing to do with the what the composer wanted. Most of these people hate opera and take great satisfaction in destroying this great art form.
Although I can't understand a single word of this Russian Opera and even English is not my language, I have to say that I'm fascinated by this battle theme at 1:30:40 and re-occurred at 1:39:25. It is hard to describe, but it gives me a sense of "inevitability". I truly wish I knew Russian.

Мрак. Не думал что людей без голосов на оперную сцену выпускают. Хуже чем в дурацком телешоу "Призрак оперы" с Киркоровым, Биланом и пр. Членораздельно поёт только Гришка, но вокал у него не дотягивает до уровня сельской самодеятельности. Про постановку молчу, этим в наше время уже не напугать.
Russian is my native language. I do not understand everything.
I'm bilingual and missed hardly a word. But perhaps I know the opera better than you and hence can fill in for sounds that may be less distinct. It would have been good to have had subtitles.

мда. у режиссера вообще отсутствие чувство сути происходящего - примитивно. певческий состав, кроме Моногаровой, очень слабый
Дирижер тоже не особо. Такой скучной увертюры я еще не слышал . И Сеча при Керженце - накала ни на грош, дирижер весь эпизод сидит на стуле как истукан .

О вкусе не споят. Если костюмы и декорации Вам не нравятся, учтите совет Баланчина в связи с хореографии: закройте глаза и радуйтеcь, что так хорошо поют и играют. Кстати, когда и где Вы слушали эту опера? С какой постановкой и исполнением Вы сравниваете эту запись?
There's no disputing taste. If one doesn't like the production values, one should remember the advice of Mr Balanchine, who said that if one doesn't like the choreography, one should close one's eyes and listen to the beautiful music. BTW, where and when have you seen Kitezh? With what production are comparing this one?
I can only wonder what you would have thought of the production I saw in Mariinsky II.

Итальянский хор,браво!В первый раз услышал в "Ой,беда идет,люди"что никто не орет,группы не расходятся друг с другом и с оркестром как во всех советских и российских записях,все ритмично,голоса звучат хорошо и единообразно.Bravi! Моногарова хороша здесь(ее тип).Казаков звучит как в 70+,и как всегда, поет ни о чем .Режиссер идиот.
