Removing Kiwi Grip on Zephyr IV

  • Much of this video is about removing Kiwi grip deck paint and renovating the Deck on Zephyr IV. The original Teak deck wore out and was removed. Subsequently the deck was painted with Kiwi Grip but the surface wasn't properly prepared, so after a few years it started to flake off. It took several weeks of work, using several tools, to remove all the Kiwi Grip. Then the damaged deck was made good with Epoxy filler and lots of sanding and then painted with conventional deck paint. Follow me as I spend weeks on my knees on the deck and see the much improved finish after all my efforts.

    I have used Kiwi-grip on numerous yachts and its always been stable and issue free. I suspect that the previous owners didn’t prepare the surface correctly which is why you had variable areas of durability. However congrats on your perseverance with the tedious endeavours in your refurbishment as it’s truely paid off. I just had the topside hull of my 40 year old yacht repainted in oyster white and it came up a treat.

    • @davesailing
      @davesailing  Рік тому +1

      I think I infer in the video that it was poor preparation that caused the Kiwi Grip to flake off. Lack of degreasing I suspect, also very variable thickness. Where it was properly applied it really did stick and it certainly wears well.
      Yes the oyster white is a really nice colour and the Toplac went on very easily and covered well. Take care ...

    I am currently undergoing a similar project. It appears the previous owner of my boat applied some sort of rubberized paint over the original factory non skid fiberglass surface. I have had to use gallons of chemical paint remover and a wire brush to remove the stuff. Then follow up by grinding and sanding. Its a horrendous job.

    • @davesailing

      You have my sympathy Jason. It's a long tedious and hard job. I definitely don't want to do another. Good luck, I hope it all works out OK.. Best wishes Dave

      @@davesailing Yep. Dave its a big pain in the behind. I must repeat the stripping/wire brush process several times before my sanders will work without the paper getting overcome by rubber goop. Anyway, I intend to redo the deck with the same materials you have applied. My boat is only 35'. But is seems like its 150' long. Thanks for your reply. And nice job btw.

      I know the feeling Jason, you never think you'll finish it. Day after day, then week after week goes by and every thing happens so slowly. And you know that if you don't do it properly then you will, forever, be disappointed with the final finish. I've still got some areas to do, maybe this year. But I'm determined to be sailing by May. I wish you all the luck with it, I hope it all works out in the end. I'm sure it will, us sailors are made of stern stuff and have a can do attitude, well that's what I used to tell myself when I thought it would never get finished.. Dave

    Was your Kiwi Grip not installed correctly? As some of it have came off with a pressure washer washer and other areas it did not come off.
    Most reviews I have read people rave about the product.

    • @davesailing
      @davesailing  2 місяці тому

      Hi Eddie, I think I sort of infer that in the video. It was done before I bought Zephyr IV and it wasn't a pretty job. I don't think the surface was prepared properly before application of the Kiwi Grip and they didn't level it well before they stippled it with the roller. As you noted some of it came off in sheets when using the pressure washer and a foot or so away it was thick and durable and hard to remove. I was forced to do something and having removed it all, I didn't want to replace it with the same and chance a repeat performance a year or so down the line. Hence the video and the re-paint job. I know several people who have used it with good results. But in every case they were meticulous with their preparation. The guys that did Zephyr IV obviously, were not so meticulous. Thanks for your comment, Have you used it or ? .... Best Wishes ... Dave

      @@susanc.8009 hi Susan Google is your friend. I did a search for professional masking tape USA and came up with quite a few possibilities with several that could be left outdoors for 30 days. @@davesailing Did you tape when it was still hot? I’m very interested in this subject now (and saving money) and plan to buy what appears to be the longest lasting outside tapes and test them to see if they don’t break when you take it off or leave a residue. I tried 14 day tape awhile back and that failed the hot Florida sun test. Did you know that tape expires, but no manufacturing date or use by date is put on them, at least not by 3M. Storing in a cool place seems to extend the tape life. I’ll get back to you on test results.

      @@susanc.8009 hi Susan. The painting was done during June July here. Msy and June were the hottest we've had for years. At one stage it was 32 c below so even warmer in the sun on deck. It was the first time I've used the blue tape but I knew I'd be in trouble if I used the ordinary stuff. I needed the tape to be on for at least 6 days before I could remove it. I got the impression that it came off more easily when it was hot. Good luck with your experiment... Dave
