I would actually, I kid you not, watch full episodes of SGS commentating old school horror movies like this.

i love sgs when they go all analytical and stop playing the game. they just argue for like 5 mins about one choice that doesn't even matter and i love that.

And the woman who could have RAN OUT THE FRONT FUCKING DOOR BECAUSE IT WAS RIGHT BEHIND HER! Ran UP STAIRS! I actually think I remember this game is infamous for these reasons ahaha.
I'm totally on the Davis train for this game. Like... say what you will, it's hard on the person with cancer, but you still have to live afterwards... Like... the debts incurred during treatment are still there, she still has to live in the house...i just...i think being sick, even terminal, does not give you the right to be so... self centered...
And it wasn't just while she was sick that she was being selfish. They talk about how they moved into an expensive place in the city because Rebecca wanted to. They talked about how Elena was paying all the bills by herself because Rebecca refused to get a job. (Admittedly, Elena was an ass by discouraging Rebecca's writing so callously, but there's still NO reason Rebecca couldn't have gotten a job and did writing on the side until her writing career was viable.) And did you SEE that collection of horror movies? Given that she didn't have a job, those were probably purchased on Elena's dime, too. And Elena said that wasn't even ALL of them.
Rebecca was a self-centered asshole.

BlinkyDrakkin thank you! I literally went to college to be a writer, but the real world has to come first. Get sustainable, the become a best selling author! And yeah, it would be hard having a significant other that put down what you loved, but prove to her you can be responsible and then show her you can also be incredible.
@RaiOfSunshine How does any of that make the game "bad"? Because one of the characters is selfish that makes the game be bad? If Rebecca had been generous and selfless would the game be "good"? Is Layers of Fear the worst game ever made then? Is a good horror game one where the characters are perfect and have great lives? None of that makes any sense my dude. Them being shitty people is the *entire point*.
I mean, you liked the ghost in the towel, and her running upstairs. Most horror games at least make more sense than that.
I would actually love if the SGS did a Mystery Science Theatre thing, where you guys watch movies, old school or otherwise that you can show on UA-cam, with you guys commenting on and enjoying the movie.
That would be a great thing to have every day or at the very least once every week.
I'm reminded of an Aqua Teen Hunger Force line. "Could you call the plumber? The Indian burial ground is coming up through the bath again"
I gotta say, I'm not feeling much empathy for Rebecca in their relationship (not in regards to the cancer, the cancer is shitty no matter how you look at it).
While she did seem like this free spirit type person, she put the entire financial onus on Elana, while also demanding things like the house in the aesthetics of their lives, while not actively contributing to that dream in any meaningful way.
Rebecca seemed to have this lofty, perfect dream for the two of them, but putting all the work into achieving that dream on Elana. Dreaming isn't a bad thing, but basically using your partner as a tool to attain it while making their emotional attachment to you an integral part of that dream sounds pretty fucking dirty and douchey.
Cobalt360Degrees equally though, Elana knowingly went into a relationship with someone who clearly has a major passion for writing but never took enough interest to read anything Rebecca wrote until she's on her deathbed.
Though, I wouldn't be surprised if Elana saw reading her work as enabling Rebecca's seemingly stagnant lifestyle.
We didn't really get too much into what they saw in each other, but we do find out that Elana seemed to have quite a social dependency on Rebecca.
Also, you can write, and have an steady job at the same time.
Rebecca just seemed to have not chosen that option, regardless of whether it would've made their lives better.
I'm real late to the party, but Elana doesn't seem to have ever bothered trying to convince her of anything else. They're both fucks, and the writing in this is questionable at best.
I appreciate the boys' attitude towards personal autonomy and art, but her lack of employment was putting a strain on the household and her wife. She could have at least gotten a part time job to be considerate of her wife's struggles.
I also completely agree that she should have been more support of her wife's art.
Marriage is a team, and the more supportive you are of each other the better it is. It's a shame these 2 were too stubborn to figure that out.
But, honestly, I probably would been too lenient with her after the cancer diagnosis. As someone who loves to travel, I wouldn't have stopped her. I would have let her do whatever she wanted to do, and lied all the way just to see her smile. And, cried while she wasn't looking. There are some people that don't want to go into hospital debt and would rather die in piece doing what they love to do, or just at home in quiet comfort.
I would have quit my job and maxed out my credit cards to take her to a country were they would still respect our relationship. Probably not the Carabina(?) or the Philippines, but those aren't the only 2 beautiful places in the world. I would have taken her somewhere beautiful where we would still walk around safely. And, if she wanted to die there she would have died in peace. I would have regretted not being supported sooner, but I would not have let her final days be ongoing suffering. I would have decided that no one, not even myself, is more important. I would have spent the rest of my life in debt for her final weeks of joy. And, that's alright with me. And, completely collapsed afterwards.

somebody really liked the intro to firewatch. where that not only gave you exposition but also gave you solely information and choices that also served to build a little character for the protagonist, offers both jokes and very, very intimate moments and engages you through not having you know how these choices will affect your game, this serves mostly as exposition and mood for the player
Something I love about the Squad is how important the decisions are to them. They are fully immersed and care greatly even about the decisions that don’t involve scary stuff at all.
I can't get enough of lengthy-discussions-to-no-actual-result-Squad.
So far, not scary and these two women should have never married. They just don't seem to mesh well together at all. Was funny though when the guys were torn between terror and joy when the naked Rebecca was getting out of the bath. xD
neolithiumproduction I disagree with that. Important thing to remember, we only get the bad. She's depressed because she blames herself for her wife's death, so she's not gonna be reminiscing about whatever good times they may have had, when she's stuck on all the bad.
Violet Snow Still, a clear problem not talking, Rebecca REFUSING to find work but yet constantly wanting, Elena having no backbone...the list goes on.

Yes I know this is old but I just wanted to stop people from destroying the writer,I mean it's not perfect but it's not as horrible as everyone makes it seem, sometimes you date the wrong person,and there's people who married the wrong person and they don't notice until it's too late so.....I think people need to open they're minds a little

I'm literally only watching for SGS' comments, but the game itself is barely even a game. It's just a story of decisions that don't matter because it'll make you feel you chose wrong either way.
Also, usually I'm question Davis' logic, but in the case with moving out of the house, everyone else (bar Jessie, who was neutral), was acting emotionally rather than logically. If they could barely afford the house with two people, how are they going to afford the house with one person who has to take care of two people? Not only that, moving out would mean they had more money for the treatment. They were just arguing that 'because she's got cancer, you should blatantly do the wrong decisions for the sake of making her happy' and claiming it was selfish to do otherwise, but that's just emotional manipulation, because it's equally as selfish for someone who knows they can't physically do anything to expect someone else to do everything and make life intentionally hard for themselves, harder than it already was, in the process.
Please. It's way too obvious that that "blood" is actually just Simon's homebrew. Although to be fair, I could see there being a bit of a twist and have it turn out to be Wendigo blood.
I'm calling it now, the entire story is going to revolve around her watching "The Brain That Wouldn't Die".

I wouldn't be surprised if the entire movie was in this game. I'm pretty sure the entirety of the movie "To Kill a Mockingbird" is in the PS3/Xbox 360 game The Darkness.

This is by far my favorite content, it takes scary games (that I would most likely not play due to lack of free time,) and turns them into scary movies with friends. Also "LEAVE! LEAVE! LEAVE! LEAVE!" What I scream at horror movies a lot.
This is exactly what I keep trying to explain to people, but worded so much better. I also have little kids so playing scary games (or staying AWAKE to play them) is not an option right now.

I wonder if the player character's personality is constant throughout all of the choices. If so, it should be reasonably easy to predict how she'd behave through each option.
She's not a proxy for the player; rather, the player gets to explore different ways she could have gone about doing or saying certain things

This is already the best SGS series.
In a business environment your feelings don't matter if her output in what ever job she is working is not on par with the minimum required by the company of her, she would be fired not just passive aggressive notes.
As a caring person a would want to get this person into psychiatric help, but as her boss, I would not be able to keep her around when I could pay a different person the same amount for more output. To make the passive aggressive note out as the villain let me frame another set of events for you:
For a year this one individual has not performed their duties as assigned to them in their contract at the company, as such someone(s) else has had to "pick up the slack" now this person(s) are not getting paid more, but because of the extra work they are getting home late, because they aren't getting paid more they are in just as much financial hot water as the protagonist, and because of this one girl's admitted desire to remain depressed, everyone around her is negatively affected. She is not the victim her especially not a Year after the passing of someone, get her to a psychiatrist, and give her a final warning to improve her output at work.
cat moth To be honest. Being Depressed gives no excuse to make EVERYONE ELSE feel like shit, If she's been moping for a year straight, she needs a wake up call.
A decent boss would call her in and address it. You don't just let an employee slack for months with no discussion or confrontation. And a boss certainly wouldn't leave passive aggressive notes. It's unprofessional. Bring her in and address the problem/fire her, or keep quiet.

This is actually pretty entertaining. This is my first exposure to this game, but if it is short (where it currently stands feels like the Denouement), then I hope they replay and make different choices to see if the game is different

That thin with the movie reminded !e that there's a thing like that in the 360 game, "The Darkness.". There's a part where you can literally watch the full movie of " To Kill A Mockingbird. ". I love it when games do stuff like this!
I like that I've watched so much MST3K I immediately recognized the movie as #513, Mike Nelson's first episode.
Game is clearly about moving on with your life vs. dwelling on the past.
So if Elana just ignored all the spooky stuff i'd wager that while it would still happen (and be creepy - representing the uneasiness and 'haunting' memories that linger at the back of Elana's mind); but at the end of the game would work out alright because ignoring it represents a positive change for her in not dwelling on the past all the time.
Whereas the ghost stuff is a metaphor for the severe depression that Elana is experiencing slowly leading to her eventual deterioration and demise because she is unable and unwilling to pull herself out of the past. By paying attention it means that Elana is just buying into psychotic break caused by depression and refusing to move on. All the cancer flashbacks and choices are just set dressing to help the SGS get into the mind of the character and bamboozle them into thinking the game is about anything other than being haunted by the past and depression.
In short, pull out boys! You gotta ignore the spoopy ghost stuff so that Elana can move on with her life!
(Please note that this is just my theory, I haven't played the game).

The Squad arguing over these choices is rather entertaining. They've gotten so into it so fast.
during a good portion of this i felt like i was watching 4 grown men play out a relationship argument between two married girls. it was surreal.
When I think of "The Brain That Wouldn't Die" I got straight to thinking about MST3K...literally most of my 50's black and white horror movies are from there... xD
That ringtone vibration thing is just so jarring and extreme.
It makes the Simulacra ringtone feel pleasant, it also sounds like it's not a part of the game/Video.
SGS doing MST3K is something I didn't know I wanted in my life.
