- DS and S2 Tube Phono preamp - My experience these two phono preamps.
This my experience with the turntable cartridges and phono preamps, sound subjective and personal. With sound - Opinions will vary, find the sound that you like and enjoy your music.

Looks like the top/lid may come off for easy access to the tubes.

I e had an S2 for two years. Rolled tubes with matched Mullards. Bass is punchy, soundstage is deep, couldn’t be happier
Good to hear, enjoy!
How did the s2 compare to the ds in terms of sound? Soundstage, detail etc? Thanks for the vid
I prefer the S2 in sound, but that’s me. DS is an old model and I don’t believe its available (could be wrong)
Thanks
I had a S2. Was defective out the box. Had clipped waveforms. In recordings it looked bricked. Wasn't fond sent it back. I was suprised how much a better performer the ifi Zen Phono was and at 1/3 of the price.
Why did you change the tubes after 3 years? Were they weak or did you just want to do a tube roll?
Tubes are really quite robust and they do last a lot longer than 3 years. The degradation doesn't usually cause a quality loss, more just an output level loss. I have tubes that are over 40 years old, from RF sections, so a lot more sensitive than audio sections, and they are still strong and they still work perfectly. Good that you mentioned that heat is the reason not to touch the tubes. So many get hung up on oils from skin, which absolutely never hurt a tube as it is standard glass on tubes.
Sound is always very subjective. Tubes add warmth and the secondary harmonics that a lot do find pleasing to listen to, but there are some that will always swear solid state is better. Personally I do like the harmonic distortion that comes through the secondary harmonics the tubes add to the mix. It is still harmonic distortion, but this is the good kind from secondary harmonics instead of primary harmonics that make thigns soudn awful.
That’s interesting, appreciate the input.
I had the original tubes for sometime and used them quite a lot. Changed them over to the JJ.
I do like the tube sound, tried other phono preamps (not many but a few), but kept coming back to my $500 Project Audio. Though I’m very keen to try the MoonRiver Audio phono pre when it’s released.
What tubes are you using with the phono tube box ds
When I was using the DS I was trying out the Electro Harmonix 12AX7 tubes. I did a quick review on them (my quick thoughts on them)
So how did the sound compare between the S and the Ds?
Hi, the DS is the older model. The S has improved in detail, however much the same. Only other changes come when you swap tubes, but the price of tubes these days - to the price of that phono, be better off maybe getting a new stylus
Hi, thanks for the video. I happened to buy the 2m bronze today and i have the tube box ds. so we have the same set up. i saw you had settings 40db and 100pf on the ds. Is this specifically for the 2m bronze….???? Hope you can help here!!
Hi,
I went with what Project Audio recommended for the 2M Red - input gain at 40db, input capacitance 147pf, input impedance 47kohms
@@concordhifi thank you very much for quick response!!
How do you take off the tubes on the DS?
If I get time, I’ll see if I can do a video on it. It’s delicate and slow going job to take the tubes out of the DS. That’s why I prefer the current model, so much easier.
Nice interconnect cables! Which ones are you using?
There Neotech Origins, there about to be replaced by AudioQuest Sydney interconnect cables.
@concordhifi I would recommandé audioquest evergreen frum your turn table..and after silverquest " dbs " green also ...imo
Psvane art series sound best .
I’ve now got AudioQuest Sydney and Audio Quest Angel rca’s now.
I’m currently reviewing and looking at Chord speaker cables, these are hand made in the UK.
Choobz good!
great vid, thanks. however, the main problem with hifi is people say it's "subjective", yet the goal of hifi really isn't. it is really more scientific because you can actually measure the fidelity (i.e. likeness) of something like sound. so in a way it's strange how people will spend tens of thousands on high fidelity yet still talk about preference and taste.
There are too many variables, so even with expensive gear, personal taste matters most.
Because sound reproduction is about way more than measurements on an oscilloscope. For instance, the audible differences between types of capacitor construction, something expensive brand developers spend a lot of time selecting what sound right in a certain part of the circuit. Tim de Paravacini would never use thiele small parameters for tuning a speaker design.
Would have been good to call it Pro-ject in the title. Not everyone knows what DS and S2 is.
Thanks for the feed back, will do.
Here you go.... ua-cam.com/video/XdZtZzHSEZA/v-deo.html Now I gotta order a matched pair from Upscale Audio in SoCal.
Awesome, nice work.
