Watching my grandson learn BJJ, it starts out as a science I believe. He has learned how not to get crushed by bigger opponents, how not to get stacked, frames, posture, position, anatomy, etc. However, as he progresses he becomes quite creative with the techniques he has learned, setting them up, baiting his opponent, using one technique to transition to another, stringing them together, etc., and he has now become quite the artist. Beautiful to watch!
I went through this process as well back in the day when I trained but my progression was not as profound or accelerated as my grandson's because he is 20x more talented than I was.

My guess. Both. Starts as a science and ends up being an art due to personalization of the art. I'ma see if we are on the same page.

I was one of the first students of the Gracie Academy when it opened in Torrance. I had the honor of doing private classes with Rickson, but Rorion is The Man. Not only does he exemplify the American Dream of going as far as your will and talent will take you, but everyone who trains and teaches JJ or MMA owes it to his energy and perseverance.

Quick question, how do I find an authentic Gracie academy (sorry if I mutilated terminology) but if the academy says Barra Gracie, or Gracie JiuJitsu does that mean it’s authentic? Like certified by a Gracie or one of their direct student’s that’s been trained by a Gracie? I know you have done videos on “what’s a good school” but wanted to know if there is an authentication process from the family of Gracie’s on starting an academy? I guess the main question is a Gracie school an actual Gracie school or can it be bought, with a black belt, a championship and money? Thank you very much in advance for your time in advance.

@@natemurch8267 I wouldnt worry too much about whether a school is "Gracie" or not. I can't speak from experience as I have never trained at a Gracie school but from the instruction I have got from my professors that have no Gracie lineage, I can't imagine that it would be a whole lot better at one of these schools. But to answer your questions in order to open a Gracie BJJ school you need to receive certification. I think it comes in 4 levels with level 4 being the most advanced (I think there is only a handful of them). Also you don't even need a black belt to open a school, I used to train under a brown belt and he was great. Overall i wouldn't worry about the school, as long as the instructors are good and friendly and you get on with the other guys and girls there you will be just fine

@@natemurch8267 there's a website called BJJ Heroes where you can search the name of an instructor and a profile will come up with his main achievements and lineage. Only the most famous go to the website so it doesn't mean someone not being there is a fraud, but if the person is there you know for sure they're legit. And analysing their lineage you'll who was their master.
      About Gracie schools:
Usually the ones on Helio's side focus on self-defense and Carlos' side on sport BJJ.
      - Gracie Academy comes from Rorion Gracie stablishing in the US and have his sons, Ryron and Renner, as leaders. It focus heavily on self-defense and is not competition oriented.
      - Gracie Humaitá comes from the original Gracie Academy in Brazil. It's ruled by Royler and Rolker Gracie. It has self-defense and competition aspects. Leticia Ribeiro, Bia Mesquita, Mackenzie Dern and Royler all had great achievements in sport JJ.
      - Gracie Barra comes from Carlinhos Gracie. It's the most widespread JJ franchise in the world. As far as I knoe, they train self-defense during the first years and focus on sport on advanced classes.
      - Renzo Gracie academy: that's where the probably best BJJ instructor in the world teaches. His name is John Danaher. You should follow his videos. Great content. It's sport oriented.
There are many great schools out there with many franchises. I holp I might have helped you in someway.

Helio had always openly said this until his death. Reyson (another one of Carlos' sons) also confirmed this years ago, he was around to see it all and taught/raised by Helio as well.
According to various family members, Carlos focused more on the the business side of things as his brother's manager, loved knocking up women, but didn't spend much time on the aftermath of parenting and preferred to delegate such father tasks to Helio, a role Helio gladly filled cos he loved kids and the idea of being a father

Good interview, thanks for posting kama JJ. Rorion has always been a great speaker, very charismatic.
While I am thankful for the Gracie's contribution to martial arts and their gift to the world, and find them to be one of the most interesting families in history, I can't help but feel the story Rorion was fed by his elders has a bit of embellishment. Re: Helio being this sickly weak child, there is documented evidence that before bjj, he was a swim competition champion and a member of his school's competition rowing team. In fact, there's a photo of teen Helio posing in his swim jumper, and he was ripped and athletic. More built than Royler. Carlos and Helio might have been small, but they were certainly athletic. So when I hear the stories about him getting winded from climbing a flight of stairs, I have my doubts. Robert Drysdale has uncovered some VERY interesting documentation re: Carlos and Helio's generation in newspaper clippings, police and census records etc that tells a story they don't share.

Helio was sick when he was younger. Similar to Teddy Roosevelt, though, he overcame his frailty with exercise and a strenuous lifestyle. By his teenage years, absolutely, Helio was an experienced athlete. Remember that Helio was the youngest son of his family - Carlos was 11 years older than him. When Carlos was learning from Maeda, Helio was barely walking.

Jason's highlight reel goes on to show multiple submission wins; triangle, kimura, etc. Most recent bio says he trained "Gracie Jiu Jitsu." Did he see the magic and sign up? Regardless, enjoy your videos - thankyou!

Royler is even smaller than Royce. If they picked Royler and won, that would've been even more convincing. But, they picked Royce to fight in the UFC, which tells me that size and strength does matter to a certain extent. Otherwise they would've picked Royler.

Don't have to beat people to a pulp? Not the stories I've heard about attacking people in Brazil. Humans are flawed, understood. Just own the downside as well as the upside. Rener and Reyron are awesome people, just love being around them. Even Relson is a kick, a real character. I am a believer of the healthy diet comments. He is always the salesman.

Rorion is the great "charlatan" - Bser, promoter. The Gracies are great story tellers. Where are they now? Answer hiding under a rock! You don't need to waste 8 years of your life learning Jiu-Jitsu but a a few moths neutralizing it. :)) The story that Jiu-Jitsu would work for the skinny guy was a nice story.
All the Gracies are not competing in the UFC, why because they've lost many times. They were humiliated by Sakuraba in Japan too.
They always look for an excuse.
And my friends they Gracies surrendered to Sakuraba, they threw the towel. By the way, the first UFC followed special rules imposed by Rorion that favor Royce. Royce used illegal drugs and he was defefead many times. The myth was over. Jiu-Jitsu can NOT win in the UFC, look at the statistics.
The Gracies do NOT compete in Vale Tudo nor in the UFC because Jiu-Jitsu alone is not enough to wind and gets your ass kicked.
