Watching my grandson learn BJJ, it starts out as a science I believe. He has learned how not to get crushed by bigger opponents, how not to get stacked, frames, posture, position, anatomy, etc. However, as he progresses he becomes quite creative with the techniques he has learned, setting them up, baiting his opponent, using one technique to transition to another, stringing them together, etc., and he has now become quite the artist. Beautiful to watch!
I went through this process as well back in the day when I trained but my progression was not as profound or accelerated as my grandson's because he is 20x more talented than I was.
My guess. Both. Starts as a science and ends up being an art due to personalization of the art. I'ma see if we are on the same page.
Great interview, Ryan! Thanks!
i dont mean to be offtopic but does anyone know a way to get back into an Instagram account??
I was stupid lost the login password. I love any tips you can offer me.
@River Alexis instablaster ;)
I was one of the first students of the Gracie Academy when it opened in Torrance. I had the honor of doing private classes with Rickson, but Rorion is The Man. Not only does he exemplify the American Dream of going as far as your will and talent will take you, but everyone who trains and teaches JJ or MMA owes it to his energy and perseverance.
This is great! Rickson Gracie next please!
We will see what we can do!
@@KamaJiuJitsu well all the family if possible, you will never run out of material LOL
Bring out the GOAT
Yes!
Yes!
I remember requesting from you a Rorion Gracie bio. Instead, you brought us the man himself. THAT'S EVEN BETTER!
👌💪
So much RESPECT and So GREATFUL to RORION...He is singlehandedly the reason we have GRACIE JUIJITSU outside of Brazil today!.. Thank You Grand Master Rorion!
Cool interview. Rorion taught me my first few classes before Royce took over. What a privilege. I don't think I've ever smiled as much as I did in the 90's training at the Gracie academy!
G.M Rorion is the man.
Without him, we would not be doing this!
Thanks a million
🙏💥👍
this is golden footage
This interview was gold. 🏆
Despite any controversy (and hear-say) surrounding Rorion, certainly I owe all my awareness of jiu-jiu-jitsu and subsequent journey directly to his dream and efforts, and I think i speak for legions, whether they know it or not. This was an awesome 👏 interview. I never get tired of listening to him. Thank you!
Rorion Gracie changed the world.
I’ve got a 3rd Dan in Hapkido and Tang Soo Do and have incorporated BJJ into my training as well. But I’m so happy this book is available. Thank You for sharing your insights, sir.
whats the differenced between tang soo do, hapkido and taekwondo, whats the pros and cons of each? what do you recommend?
@@flowrepins6663 TSD and TKD are tech similar in technical application, lots of kicks and strikes and forms, aggressive kicks. Hapkido is street defense. Very dangerous. Similar principles as BJJ, use leverage and technique. Submissions, bone breaks, ground fighting, elbows and knees, joint locks, etc.::
Personally I love combining BJJ and Hapkido into a Hybrid defense system.
One of the best instructors, business, promotors of Jiu-Jitsu and healthy nutrition
I always thought they just came to America with the intention of starting a fighting event and had it all planned out. To hear him say somebody stole his money and got left in united states and the whole thing happened by accident basically is crazy. This is an amazing interview
This is the podcast I didn't know I really wanted. So great!
I have not ever tried bjj, been watching your videos and now I’m dying to start. Thank you please keep them coming.
Quick question, how do I find an authentic Gracie academy (sorry if I mutilated terminology) but if the academy says Barra Gracie, or Gracie JiuJitsu does that mean it’s authentic? Like certified by a Gracie or one of their direct student’s that’s been trained by a Gracie? I know you have done videos on “what’s a good school” but wanted to know if there is an authentication process from the family of Gracie’s on starting an academy? I guess the main question is a Gracie school an actual Gracie school or can it be bought, with a black belt, a championship and money? Thank you very much in advance for your time in advance.
@@natemurch8267 I wouldnt worry too much about whether a school is "Gracie" or not. I can't speak from experience as I have never trained at a Gracie school but from the instruction I have got from my professors that have no Gracie lineage, I can't imagine that it would be a whole lot better at one of these schools. But to answer your questions in order to open a Gracie BJJ school you need to receive certification. I think it comes in 4 levels with level 4 being the most advanced (I think there is only a handful of them). Also you don't even need a black belt to open a school, I used to train under a brown belt and he was great. Overall i wouldn't worry about the school, as long as the instructors are good and friendly and you get on with the other guys and girls there you will be just fine
@@natemurch8267 there's a website called BJJ Heroes where you can search the name of an instructor and a profile will come up with his main achievements and lineage. Only the most famous go to the website so it doesn't mean someone not being there is a fraud, but if the person is there you know for sure they're legit. And analysing their lineage you'll who was their master.
About Gracie schools:
Usually the ones on Helio's side focus on self-defense and Carlos' side on sport BJJ.
- Gracie Academy comes from Rorion Gracie stablishing in the US and have his sons, Ryron and Renner, as leaders. It focus heavily on self-defense and is not competition oriented.
- Gracie Humaitá comes from the original Gracie Academy in Brazil. It's ruled by Royler and Rolker Gracie. It has self-defense and competition aspects. Leticia Ribeiro, Bia Mesquita, Mackenzie Dern and Royler all had great achievements in sport JJ.
- Gracie Barra comes from Carlinhos Gracie. It's the most widespread JJ franchise in the world. As far as I knoe, they train self-defense during the first years and focus on sport on advanced classes.
- Renzo Gracie academy: that's where the probably best BJJ instructor in the world teaches. His name is John Danaher. You should follow his videos. Great content. It's sport oriented.
There are many great schools out there with many franchises. I holp I might have helped you in someway.
Increíble historia, escucharlo la energía que transmite, el humor es increíble. Bendiciones!!!
Wow! Just learned from Grandmaster Rorion the most important things in life is your health. Thank you sir!!
Really special episode. Thank you for posting this positivity!!
Ryan, thank you for the great interview. I love learning history from the older generations of our martial art. Interesting learning why Rickson left so, thank you for asking Rorion about that. I would’ve loved to hear about Rorion’s relationship with Carley if there currently is one these days and about some of what happened legally etc…straight from his lips. Anyway, overall great interview. Nice work Ryan.
Thanks for posting
I love Rorion's passion about healthy eating habits.
He has the passion, but the diet isn't based on science. Example: in one of his videos, Rorion was talking about using avocado as a meat substitute, saying avocados are a "great source of protein."
I don’t eat the way does, but the old Gracie family members are “healthy as horses.”
Love this. Glad you’re making these videos.
I miss the podcast and this should be uploaded.
What podcast?
Wow. This is an awesome interview. Thank you.🙏🏽
What an awesome interview! This kinda stuff is so beneficial to so many people, including myself
Love this interview! Love Gracie Jiu-Jitsu
Excellent stuff Ryan! Thanks for getting Grandmaster Rorion on your channel! His story is very informative and great to hear.
Great interview Ryan! Thanks for setting this up. Love your content!
Ryan, if you could arrange interviews with other famous jiu-jitsu instructors it would be great.
This one was awesome.
Rickson, Relson, Royce, Royler, Renner, Ryron, Renzo, Pedro Sauer, John Danaher, Leticia Ribeiro, etc.
I'm a big fan of Pedro Sauer I'd love that.
Geez guy. He just had GM Rorion on take it easy 😂
Really, though, after GM Rorion, who besides GM Rickson can top that? GM Helio, GM Carlos, and Rolls have long passed.
I hit the climax hard and I hit it fast 😂!
@@KamaJiuJitsu Kron Gracie would be a cool interview. Hear how he grew up being taught by his father. Kron then Rickson. No pressure 😂
I’ll see what I can do.
Damn my eyes and ears are glued to this...
Wow what a great interview!
Awesome interview, I have taught many ppl to include military, LEO's, and for hire prior military. They all have trained bjj but never the stand up fighting self defense portion. They were very appreciative and grateful for the training they learned from the mindset of fighting/defending of gjj than just point system jiu-jitsu nowadays. 💯
The jj Bible is our blk blt test all the stand up.
Great interview!
Amazing interview.
That guy he mentioned Hee Il Cho now Grand Master of Tae Kwon Do. He probably felt like fish out of water😂🤣😂 I hope his hands are a lot more open today. I wish I took BJJ over Tae Kwon Do when I was into Martial Arts. Best content to date.
master cho has a bjj school inside his tkd academy in hawaii and has been including grappling in his system for 23 yrs but its not well integrated nor well taught.
Fabulous stuff! A martial arts treasure. I could listen to this interview a dozen times and not get tired of it…
Great interview! Interesting to hear about the days before the first garage was set up! Humble beginnings for sure
He’s a great salesman and a great talker I’m buying his book
This was an awesome interview, thank you for doing this!!
I was like WHAT! Gracie has an app. So I just downloaded it thanks!!
Great interview!
Great 👍 interview.
Funny to see the judo pictogram from the 1972 olympics used as symbol by the gracie academy.😮
Gracie Jiu Jitsu/ Brasilian Jiu Jitsu is like magic and it has proven how effective it is ( UFC)
Re: Milius, I had no idea sr. Is the one that convinced Rorion to open up. I met Ethan back in 04 when he was still in law school, great guy, incredibly talented.
Fascinating!
Those old gracie videos he was my first coach
This is awesome Ryan
Very interesting stories and philosophy. IMHO practitioners and of course school owners should listen to this interview to broaden their jiu jutsu perspective. + great if there is a Gracie week.
Maestro Rorion!
How about some info on GM Rorion's Mother. They never talk about the women in the family for some reason.
because they never did jujitsu apart from kyra and the older gracies were misogynists.Women were only for having de babbies.
This interview is explosive b/c Rorion said his father trained all of Carlos' kids. Surely Carlos helped them at times, but Helio was the jiu-jitsu coach, this is true. Carlos' kids feel justified distorting this story b/c they felt Rorion wrote Carlos out of the story when he brought jiu-jitsu to America with the UFC.
Helio had always openly said this until his death. Reyson (another one of Carlos' sons) also confirmed this years ago, he was around to see it all and taught/raised by Helio as well.
According to various family members, Carlos focused more on the the business side of things as his brother's manager, loved knocking up women, but didn't spend much time on the aftermath of parenting and preferred to delegate such father tasks to Helio, a role Helio gladly filled cos he loved kids and the idea of being a father
spectacular 1986 when I got to start to train privately in the garage
brings me back I remember some of these stories lot of them remind me of the times back then but then there are so many sacrifices that we never know that GM Rorian ever made❤
Grandmaster!!
Hey I love your videos. You should record them offline and put them together to post o. UA-cam to make a clear video of both people and the audio is clear.
Rorion looks great! Besides his diet I'm interested in knowing what exercise he's getting, and whether he's still training in jiu-jitsu.
Great stories!!! He il cho was SUPER famous. Too funny
Gassho(Salve)...muito obrigado Grao Mestre Rorion Gracie!
What's the best place to train in the Northeast(New England) for Gracie Jiu-Jitsu?
Good interview, thanks for posting kama JJ. Rorion has always been a great speaker, very charismatic.
While I am thankful for the Gracie's contribution to martial arts and their gift to the world, and find them to be one of the most interesting families in history, I can't help but feel the story Rorion was fed by his elders has a bit of embellishment. Re: Helio being this sickly weak child, there is documented evidence that before bjj, he was a swim competition champion and a member of his school's competition rowing team. In fact, there's a photo of teen Helio posing in his swim jumper, and he was ripped and athletic. More built than Royler. Carlos and Helio might have been small, but they were certainly athletic. So when I hear the stories about him getting winded from climbing a flight of stairs, I have my doubts. Robert Drysdale has uncovered some VERY interesting documentation re: Carlos and Helio's generation in newspaper clippings, police and census records etc that tells a story they don't share.
Helio was sick when he was younger. Similar to Teddy Roosevelt, though, he overcame his frailty with exercise and a strenuous lifestyle. By his teenage years, absolutely, Helio was an experienced athlete. Remember that Helio was the youngest son of his family - Carlos was 11 years older than him. When Carlos was learning from Maeda, Helio was barely walking.
Or do diminish the family’s contributions.
Great video Ryan... Rorion is a real gent. As well as a great salesman ;)
Awesome interview Ryan! Did you read Rickson's book breath? Although a fascinating man, seems like Rorion was very greedy😔
Yep, I read Rickson’s book.
Where can I find a Gracie academy near me?
I would say in the early days here in the US, Rorian Gracie was The Godfather of Gracie Jiu Jitsu.
I’d say he still is.
Helio was a competitive rower before BJJ the idea that he was in bad health is another part of the myth, just like Carlos didn't train under meada he trained under a student and it lasted about a year and half to two years according to the historical timeline.
The sole fact that this man is still alive after those ten years of ruining other martial artists' businesses proves that he is touched by the grace of God.
😂
That’s one way of looking at it.
Thumbs up!!
His English is really really good.
hes been here for 40 yrs
@@scarred10 other Gracie members too and have horrible English. Relson in particular.
😆
L&R Rorion Gracie from Gjj in ICELAND
If anything, this man's contribution to the martial arts community in the United States is understated. He's bigger than Bruce Lee.
Of course he is Bruce Lee died early. Bruce Lee knew some Judo and his style was still growing so who knows the possibilities.
Just out of curiosity, is there a reason why Prof. Rorion Gracie doesn't eat pork?
At lease he’s not claiming his dad created jiujitsu like Rener say all the time he asmits he learned from the Japanese
No White Castle in California 😢😢
Not anymore. None when I moved there in 1992.
Did you know you can buy the Gracie Diet book on Amazon?? LOL
Of course. It’s in the links in the video notes.
He lost me when on the reason why he placed Royce to fight the early UFC. There are too many sources that say Rickson was the primary source. Either case great interview
I’ll ask Rickson when I interview him.
He is a great salesman for sure 😅
The only thing I question is this story of Helios frail health. The guy looks quite athletic and buff in his swim team outfit and I hear he was on a rowing team
its complete nonsense obviously like half the things youll hear about him, just marketing hype.Doesnt it sound better that a small weak man beats giants?
Challenge match participants? Anyone ever come in, see the magic first hand and sign up and is a black belt today? Thankyou.
I know one of GM Relson’s old school black belts (Kofi Debra) got his start after losing a challenge match.
@@KamaJiuJitsu Any chance you could interview Jason Delucia? Famous challenge fight with Royce, then they meet in UFC2. Jason's highlight reel goes on to show multiple submission wins; triangle, kimura, etc. Most recent bio says he trained "Gracie Jiu Jitsu." Did he see the magic and sign up? Regardless, enjoy your videos - thankyou!
Royler is even smaller than Royce. If they picked Royler and won, that would've been even more convincing. But, they picked Royce to fight in the UFC, which tells me that size and strength does matter to a certain extent. Otherwise they would've picked Royler.
Royler lived in Brazil at the time, IIRC. Logistics might’ve been an issue, since I THINK, Royler was better than Royce at the time.
founder?????
crazy 😜
Rorion is stoned 😎
Don't have to beat people to a pulp? Not the stories I've heard about attacking people in Brazil. Humans are flawed, understood. Just own the downside as well as the upside. Rener and Reyron are awesome people, just love being around them. Even Relson is a kick, a real character. I am a believer of the healthy diet comments. He is always the salesman.
You say that like being a “salesman” is bad.
It was not said as though it is bad. Simply an observation, just like the other observations. A very interesting man.
3 words: Instructor Certification Program.
We call our program the Instructor Training Program.
GM Carley Gracie was 1st to bring GJJ to U.S., just saying...
Here we go 🙄
@@William.H.Bonney 😂
thats true but he was unknown and still is,nobody knew anything about his bjj .
First ! Oss!
His dad developed all those standing techniques in the book?? hmm. great salesman
Royce is 6,1 the other brothers are under 6 feet. Some are even 5,7.Royce is not the smallest one he was the tallest.
He was 170lbs soaking wet. But yes, Royler (and maybe Rolker) was smaller. But Royce was the smallest/weakest in the US of Rorion and his brothers (Relson and Rickson).
@@KamaJiuJitsu I believe royce is the youngest too.Royler is a year older.Rickson is the shortest but the biggest.
@@chiefpriestmalakyaahlahada6748 robin is the youngest,he lives and teaches in europe
And that’s how the west was won 👍🏼
For real all is From old School judo/Jiu Jitsu. We can honor Helio without all the Bullshit marketing from rorion. Helio didnt change Any technique.
anybody who sues their own family is a slime in my opinion..great teacher, terrible person
Rorion is the great "charlatan" - Bser, promoter. The Gracies are great story tellers. Where are they now? Answer hiding under a rock! You don't need to waste 8 years of your life learning Jiu-Jitsu but a a few moths neutralizing it. :)) The story that Jiu-Jitsu would work for the skinny guy was a nice story.
All the Gracies are not competing in the UFC, why because they've lost many times. They were humiliated by Sakuraba in Japan too.
They always look for an excuse.
And my friends they Gracies surrendered to Sakuraba, they threw the towel. By the way, the first UFC followed special rules imposed by Rorion that favor Royce. Royce used illegal drugs and he was defefead many times. The myth was over. Jiu-Jitsu can NOT win in the UFC, look at the statistics.
The Gracies do NOT compete in Vale Tudo nor in the UFC because Jiu-Jitsu alone is not enough to wind and gets your ass kicked.
