  • On July 16, 1945, the U.S. government tested their first nuclear bomb, led by J. Robert Oppenheimer. As the blast went off, Oppenheimer became aware not only the terrifying power of the nuclear bomb but also our inability to entirely comprehend the implications of this invention. His attempts to warn the public were silenced and ridiculed, though today, over 65 years later, his voice is a haunting reminder of our very real nuclear threat.

The world IS always at war.

    • @rhyswilson4132
      @rhyswilson4132 9 років тому +81

Japan was a defeated country when the bombs were dropped. The US had intercepted Japanese radio transmissions before the bombs that they would be open to seeking acceptable surrender terms, the absolute being that they keep their Emperor. Therefore the use of the bombs on Japan at that time was highly unmoral and pointless.
That being said, the fact that the US had an atomic weapon, almost certainly kept the USSR out of Western Europe at the end of the War. The main issue with atomic power was that Oppenheimer's vision of international control of it was never realised.
The fact that the rest of the world has been at war at some time or another is partially down to US and USSR relations. But it's also the U.S's need to control international situations to apparently secure their freedom stateside when it's usually as much to do with securing their interests.

This argument is futile. Saying you wish the Atom was not better understood and used as a weapon is like saying you wish guns were never invented. Or bows and arrows... Swords.. Sticks and stones... As long as there are bad people that can use a brain, they will invent a way to harm others. Or bad people that control the ones with brains. There is no stopping the creation, only stopping the wrong people from getting the advantage and using it against good people. I wish there were no weapons. That would be a nice Utopian world. But, it will NEVER exist. So, I wish the next best thing. I wish to be armed better than the guy that wants to cause harm. Every country in the UN could give up nuclear weapons and there would still be a problem with countries such as North Korea, and then there would be a mass surplus of unused weapons able to disappear and end up in the wrong arms. This will be a slow and slippery process. Honestly, until the world has a greater enemy, it will always be it's own enemy. It really is human nature, and you are naive to think it will work differently. Utopia will never exist, and even if it did, people wouldn't know what was great without some bad. Bittersweet.

AZ DieselTech No it's different. Not only the intentional misuse of splitting of the atom endangers people, but also the commercial nuclear energy was one of the worst ideas ever in human history, since if even a small percentage of it's nuclear waste is getting into the environment in the next 100.000 years it will make this planet uninhabitable.
The splitting of the atom shows what happens when a stupid species (humans) gets its hand on powerfull instruments that it doesn't really understand.

I completely disagree with the people who believe we'd be better off without nukes. We wouldn't. Without this kind of deterrent, there is no doubt that the USSR and the USA would have engaged open war against one another. And WW2 era wars are way deadlier than nukes-guarded peace.

Fact Check: Oppenheimer was very emotionally impacted by the advent of the nuclear bomb (as the video shows) and when they dropped them on Japan, and the proceeding interest in more nuke production increased. Oppenheimer went to President Truman on many occasions telling him that he died inside and was very hurt by this. Truman’s secretary wrote after Oppenheimer left. Truman told him I don’t want that coward in here ever again. He didn’t drop the bomb I did. Thank Dan Carlin.

One thing I do believe is that that the bomb would have eventually been created, it would have been eventually used. But since the bombings in Japan, no nuclear power has ever engaged in direct conflict due to the threat of mutual destruction. Do I feel what happened to the civilian population in Japan was right, of course not but. We have not had a global scale war since. We can reduce the number of nukes but maybe keep enough to reassure mutual destruction and if all powers adopt no first use policy then even better.

At this point it makes no sense to disarm. It's a dangerously naive suggestion. We may like to believe that we're setting an example, and maybe our allies would foolishly follow, but our adversaries and enemies would never and they would gain tremendous leverage over us. So while the bomb may have been a terrible creation, it would be more terrible to thrust us so stupidly into such a position of vulnerability.

They had no idea what the Germans were doing and didn't want Hitler to have the weapon first. At that point in time, the U.S. was tracking uranium sales and transfers and Germany had over 1300 tons of uranium. Heisenberg was the chief physicist for the Germans, and the other physicists had great respect for his abilities. The physicists felt that if they could figure out how to make a bomb, so could Heisenberg. That's why it's often called "racing for the bomb." The original race was against the Germans - who, in the end, had no idea how to make a bomb because Hitler would not dedicate the money and resources needed. In fact, Heisenberg was shocked that the American bomb was delivered by a plane as his calculations showed it would take 2.2 tons of uranium to make a bomb and it needed to be surrounded by heavy water. He had no idea that the U.S. had mastered separation of U235 and the creation of quantities of plutonium

Certainly! J. Robert Oppenheimer's life was marked by several controversies, which contributed to his eventual downfall. Here are some of the key controversies associated with him:
    1. Political Associations: Oppenheimer's early political affiliations and associations with left-wing organizations during his youth attracted suspicion and scrutiny during the McCarthy era. He had connections with communist sympathizers and was associated with various left-leaning groups. These associations raised concerns about his loyalty and potential security risks, leading to investigations into his background.
    2. Loyalty Concerns: Oppenheimer's vocal opposition to the use of nuclear weapons after World War II, combined with his past political associations, raised doubts about his loyalty to the United States. During the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) hearings in 1954, he faced accusations of being a security risk and having communist sympathies. This ultimately led to the revocation of his security clearance.
    3. The Oppenheimer Security Hearing: The security hearing conducted by the AEC in 1954 was a highly controversial event that dealt a significant blow to Oppenheimer's career. The hearing aimed to determine whether Oppenheimer's security clearance should be renewed. The proceedings were characterized by tense interrogations and testimonies from various individuals, including fellow scientists and colleagues. Oppenheimer's loyalty, political beliefs, and judgment were scrutinized, and the hearing resulted in the revocation of his security clearance.
    4. Ethical Responsibility: Oppenheimer faced criticism for his role in the development of the atomic bomb. Some argued that he should have exercised greater moral and ethical judgment, considering the catastrophic consequences of the weapon. Oppenheimer's own conflicted views on the use and proliferation of nuclear weapons, combined with his involvement in their creation, added to the controversy surrounding his legacy.
    5. Postwar Activism: Following his security clearance revocation, Oppenheimer became involved in various activist and political endeavors. He publicly advocated for nuclear arms control, disarmament, and international control of atomic energy. These activities further fueled controversy and polarized opinions about his intentions and loyalties.
It is important to note that the controversies surrounding Oppenheimer were deeply entwined with the political climate of the time and the broader context of the Cold War. These events reflect the heightened tensions, suspicions, and ideological conflicts prevalent during the McCarthy era and the Second Red Scare. Oppenheimer's legacy remains a subject of ongoing debate, as different perspectives continue to shape the narrative surrounding his life and contributions.
