I knew it. Nolan seems to be making three movies of a kind. First, he finished the 'trilogy' of not so expensive psychological films like Memento, Insomnia and The Prestige. Then he went into action territory and did The Dark Knight trilogy. After that, he made three sci-fi film such as Inception, Interstellar and Tenet. Starting with Dunkirk, I believe he started the trilogy of real life stories brought onto the screen. The pattern of his release goes like this: starting with two movies of one trilogy, then doing a first movie of the next and then making the third of the trilogy. Accordingly, he proceeds to make the second movie of his new trilogy then the first movie of the new and then the third movie of the old again. Let's call his trilogies a, b, c, d. 1a Memento 2a Insomnia 1b Batman Begins 3a The Prestige 2b The Dark Knight 1c Inception 3b The Dark Knight Rises 2c Interstellar 1d Dunkirk 3c Tenet 2d Oppenheimer The next one could be a start of something new or Nolan could simply do the third real life story and retire.
Interesting indeed, I'm definitely sharing with my friends. Personally, I think Nolan won't retire soon, look at Spielberg and Kubrick, they didn't retire at all. But I could be wrong.
This is very compeling but a few things to mention. He does consider Following his first film, not Memento. But he has been trying to make a Howard Hughes film since the beggining of his career, and owns the screen rights to one of the biographies. Its a true or realistic story, set in a similar period to Oppenheimer and Dunkirk. However, if your theory holds true, it will likely not follow Oppenheimer, and will be 2 films after.
So excited to see Cillian Murphy in the lead, finally a huge break for the world to see this extrodinary actor whose make believe is beyond belief.💙💙💙Love him so much💙💙💙
Cylian murphy seems to be the perfect fit for the role, both as an accomplished actor and in physical resemblance. Oppenheimer was a complex character, brilliant but flawed, divisive , it seems that one was either in awe or find him an posser, intense if he wished to, aloof and distant to others. A bit infatuated with his own brilliance perhaps, he started to believe his own myth, but then again most people would do that if you accomplished what he did. I hope the movie doesn’t scip on the hardcore physics and mathematics. That will be challenging, general public tent to find that boring I gues .
It’s the most interesting part. Explaining basic physical concepts is important to add depth. But adding mathematical calculations doesn’t make sense if they are not thoroughly shown because no one has the time in a cinema to calculate stuff. So it should include that, but only to a point that it adds to the story without more confusion than typical for a Nolan movie
The movie must include the deaths of the two researchers who came into contact with the 'demon core' of the bombs, to explain the largely unknown nature of radiation poisoning and the unknown dangers surrounding the development of a weapon of horror.
We already know he’s going to be shooting on IMAX 70MM. So there’s one of his trademarks right there. Hopefully he also opens this one with a kickass prologue like he did with The Dark Knight, Tenet and Dunkirk.
I wonder if Nolan will do an A story and a B story with this film. Like we saw in Dunkirk. With Tom Hardy's character in the air, Barry Keoghan at sea and Fionn Whitehead's on land.
thats actually a cool idea, 1 plot follows Oppenheimer making the atomic bomb, another follows allied forces on the ground and a third maybe some Japanese civilians(?!). Could be really cool.
Took a lot of research but the story of Oppenheimer is one a lot of people know and like I say the themes very much link in to Nolan's work very appropriately. Can't wait to see what he does with it. And thank you!
Regardless of whether you like his movies or not, you can always count on Nolan to give his bloody 110% to his every movie. That's why it's always a pleasure watch his movies, even though it can sometimes be too "Nolan-y". With every outing, it feels like an artist striving for immortality.

I'm looking forward to this! The 1980 BBC series "Oppenheimer" staring Sam Waterston inspired me to pursue a career in engineering and physics at a relatively young age. I've been a student of J Robert ever since. My hope is that this film does justice to his legacy.

I came up with a Nolan-esk movie that I will make in the future. It's called Shift, it's like Inside Out, Inception, Joker, and One Flew Over the Cukoo's Nest had a baby. The movie follows Micheal White, a patient at an asylum with bipolar disorder. Also including Nurse Abby Barnik, a mysterious nurse with an unknown past. And Paul Jameson, an old man with scyzofrienia. As well as Dr. Jack Roberts, a doctor who helps Paul and Micheal in there investigation. The title, "Shift" is a metaphor for the emotional shifts of the main character, the changes in genres, and the shift in color. Depending on the emotion of the main character, the lense is that color. For example, if he's mad the lense is fully red. What do you think?
I’ve been watching Feynman videos for a long time, fascinating man. Such a character. I’m embarrassed to say , until last week I had NO idea he was involved with this. Not surprising really.
I'm particularly interested in this film because when I was born my Dad was going to Cal Tech and he met Oppenheimer a few times. Of course, back then my Dad (nor anybody else) had any idea what he was working on with the Manhattan Project.
Theres some clips here on UA-cam with students from UC Berkeley and UCLA catching quick glimpses of Christopher Nolan and some of the cast like Matt Damon
I hope Nolan portrays his unique personality.I read he was a fantastic teacher as well as scientist. He oversaw thousands of people and had a vision quest to complete the project. When the war ended he did not even know it for 3days because he didn't read the news.He taught himself Dutch in 6 wks and gave a lecture in it.He was one of a kind of genius that overlapped in many fields. I believe he could not be controlled by the government and a tragedy of a real hero.
Interesting. I've always said that Nolan might be better off doing something more stripped back, perhaps lower budget after Tenet (which I thought was a bit of an overcomplicated mess both creatively and technically despite how ambitious it was). I've also said that adapting a novel or something would give him a bit of an extra creative constraint that helps directors refocus going forward after bigger projects (ie. Stanley Kubrick doing A Clockwork Orange after 2001). I can't imagine this will be a 'biopic' in the traditional sense. It might never even be made (it's hard to do historical dramas, even for great directors as they require a lot of time/research. Kubrick's Napoleon and a couple of his planned WW2 dramas never made it to screen. There are countless other examples too). I'll reserve judgements in that sense.
Point to be seen is that Nolan's most ambitious (back then) biopic was the Howard Hughes biopic which was shelved. It seems that it was his best script. I just have a feeling if he is doing the same with Oppenheimer and using some well worked formulas back in the Howard Hughes script and making a much grounded thriller which we are waiting for. I think he is looking to set his tone right with this one. I hope to watch the unmade Howard Hughes biopic in the Oppenheimer biopic. I just hope .....
A lot of this, like Teller supporting the Hydrogen Bomb, comes from a lot of motivation for developing these weapons was to avoid a technological surprise. The research was justified based on this premise. ...and by the way in Los Alamos, they say it as "Loss All Ah Moahse," or jokenly "Lost Almost."
Part of this was filmed in my hometown, downtown Princeton. A couple of my friends saw Damon and Blunt walking down Witherspoon street a couple of days ago
I’m very excited for this Nolan movie. I hope It is a straight forward bio pic. Nolan doesn’t need to do any time manipulation crap like what he did with Tenet. Just tell a great story about the father of the atomic bomb with no time travel involved.
Haven’t been excited for a new film in a while.. Oppenheimer’s face is so recognizable I hope they were able to cast someone who looks enough like him.
Great video. I think you hit it on the head, in which we will get the emotional view point of the title character, and his repercussions of developing the A-Bomb.

I am excited to see this movie about the man who was the inventor of the atomic age and have been waiting for someone to tell the story of this man who is very well known in history today.
Please please please someone make this comment reach to Mr. Nolan- The message is- can he use the whole album - "A thousand suns" of the band Linkin Park as the soundtrack of the movie. This album is also about the same incident and few lines from the bhagavad gita which was said by J.Robert Oppenheimer. Don't know why I am even commenting this but it would be a great collaboration.
When Oppenheimer quotes the Hindu scripture -the Gita it was not Vishnu who spoke to Arjuna, the Prince of the Pandavas but Krishna -the Blue God,his charioteer in the 18 days battle of Kurukshetra. This discussion, dilemma and doubt of righteous duty in the battlefield is philosophically encapsulated in the Bhagawat Gita (for many Hindus their ultimate holy book)
This will be the third adaptation, Sam Waterston played Oppenheimer for a PBS TV series years ago that was quite magnificent. Years later a Paul Newman film, "Fat Man and Little Boy" did not fair so well. Mr. Newman portrayed General Groves I believe and the actor who played Oppenheimer in that film escapes me? Well, we'll see?
What I don’t get is the use of IMAX. Does a drama really need IMAX. He could probably save a lot by just shooting standard 35 or 65mm. Unless there are unknown action scenes I’m unaware of. People make jokes about the bomb being real, but it has to be CG. I love IMAX. I just don’t see the practical reason for IMAX on a historical drama,
I’m sure there’s a reason. Depends what Nolan’s approach is. It’s based on a book and I’m thinking of buying it soon to read what he is adapting from. I have also felt the same as you regarding the imax but I’m also of the mindset that I trust he will use correctly cause he has done that with switching ratios and formats in his other films. We’ll just have to see on this one man
Watching the BBC mini series from 1980 with Sam Waterston and documentary in preparation of the Christopher Nolan big screen vision to be released in July 2023 starring Irish actor Cillian Murphy as lead scientist of the Manhattan Project and the father of The Atomic Bomb!
Excited! Big fan of every single Nolan's movies. But... Just discovered Emily Blunt is in it and Robert Downey Jr is in it? First, Emily is everywhere... I feel like it's the same face everywhere. And Robert, I remembered discovering his true personality and because of that, never bothered watching Ironman. So disappointed a little but we'll see.
It is also important to note that the Quantum theory derives from the VEDAS most of the notable German scientists were inspired by the Hindu philosophy
Love Rush and love that song, but since it will be a period piece, I doubt the song will be used. But, what could work is an orchestral arrangement...Perhaps one based off the orchestration during the solo section.
@@mjm5081 Thanks for the reply, fellow Rush fan ❤️. What you said is true. I hope an orchestral arrangement would be used in the movie. But I doubt if the composer of this movie knows this song. It is kinda an obscure song from the Rush catalogue.
he will portray him as a character, leaves us to decide what he is, a genius scientist or destroyer of the worlds, just as he left Interstellar, Inception, TDKR, Tenet, etc.
This area has been covered many times before, but Nolan’s take will be interesting. Even now, the 1980 TV mini series is excellent. Richard Feynman’s stories on the period are good too.
maybe... its just ridiculous though how many times hollywood is going to repeat itself. New voice or not. These stories have been told a hundred times. I had more faith in Nolan than to go and do some often repeated subject like the WW2. Dunkirk was done well because it was a story not really told too much in film.

Interstellar had Gargantua, and black holes are considered creators/destroyers. Fun fact: Oppenheimer and Snyder, Oppenheimer/Tolman/Volkov all predicted gravitational collapse from a Neutron Star to become-wait for it-a black hole. Now, this unwitting father of black holes who is the creator of the Atomic Age and Destroyer is once again revisited by Nolan in a direct way: Oppenheimer. Nolan set us all on this road from Interstellar. 😅
Oppenheimer's dilemma regarding the bomb's creation has proven largely irrelevant as it 1) achieved its immediate aim of ending the war with Japan, and, 2) achieved its broader aim of preventing the same kinds of global wars that marked the first half of the 20th century. It has been 78 years since Hiroshima/Nagasaki and World War III never happened and probably won't given the stakes.

The message is- can he use the whole album - "A thousand suns" of the band Linkin Park as the soundtrack of the movie.
We’ll just have to see on this one man
Cillian Murphy!!!!!!
Watching the BBC mini series from 1980 with Sam Waterston and documentary in preparation of the Christopher Nolan big screen vision to be released in July 2023 starring Irish actor Cillian Murphy as lead scientist of the Manhattan Project and the father of The Atomic Bomb!
Mark Rylance should be cast in this role. Looks like the perfect role for him. They look alike.
No, Channing Tatum should be
@@thatswhatithought6519 Rylance is too old.
Cillian Murphy is casted in the role. I'm hyped.
Cillian Murphy got the role
Funniest pronunciation of Los Alamos I've ever heard. (at 4:17).
One of the best things you can say about a film is that its a Christopher Nolan film.
Agreed, he is a movie making prodigy.
Cillian Murphy as Oppenheimer.
Interesting you have given me hope that this might be a good picture. It's going to be tricky.
Cillian Murphy and RDJ will be there🔥
excited for josh harnett's comeback
after interstellar hope he makes a bang with this release !!
This movie will be epic.
Hope the movie will include the Rush song "Manhattan Project " about the bomb.
@@tsarbomba7585 My pleasure fellow Rush fan!
My dad was in charge of the concrete pour with the Army Coprs of Engineers for the Manhatan Project.
I wonder will Nolan portray Oppenheimer as a mostly sympathetic or unsympathetic character.
Complex
he will portray him as a character, leaves us to decide what he is, a genius scientist or destroyer of the worlds, just as he left Interstellar, Inception, TDKR, Tenet, etc.

Excellent vid
🙏
closest thing we got to Kubrick :)
I can't wait, I love Cillian Murphy
This area has been covered many times before, but Nolan’s take will be interesting.
Even now, the 1980 TV mini series is excellent.
Richard Feynman’s stories on the period are good too.
maybe... its just ridiculous though how many times hollywood is going to repeat itself. New voice or not. These stories have been told a hundred times. I had more faith in Nolan than to go and do some often repeated subject like the WW2. Dunkirk was done well because it was a story not really told too much in film.

You’re obviously an expert, please list the 100 films (or dramatised TV series) on the Manhattan Project so I can watch them.
From what I can tell, there have been more films about Dunkirk (5) than the Manhattan project (4), but you obviously know much more about it than I do.
I await your list with baited breath.
.
@@fredbloggs5902 BTW.. we dont know how much of this film will have to do with the manhattan project in general douche. The point Im making is that general sphere of the war has been covered in hundreds of films. All of the ones on that list at least mention or cover some aspect of it.
@@fredbloggs5902 But there are a hell of a lot more than 4 dealing with a specific focus on the manhattan project by the way. That list has about 15 just on the hyper focus of the manhattan project. So wrong again douchey von douchenheim
@@devinmichaelroberts9954 No worries, a list of 15 films on the Manhattan Project will be great, I’ve only ever seen the Sam Waterstone TV series and the Paul Newman film. The scene where Cusack has a sub criticality is incredible moving. I await your list with anticipation.
Why am i seeing this now? Oh! i have been re-watching TENET
Oppenheimer was among the first American scientists to have studied Sanskrit and the Hindu Vedic philosophy along with his friend Einstein
Sounds amazing!
Nolans got a new film out count me in love the guy's movies
