  • Review of Eureka Filtro, Crono & Brew Pro coffee grinders. Includes test result comparing "fines" produced by each grinder. These machine grade grinders are a cut above appliance grade grinders featuring 50mm flat burrs in the Filtro and Crono models and 55mm flat burrs in the Brew Pro. The Filtro is a great value with better build, bigger burrs and price similar to a Breville Smart Grinder Pro and it's priced less than a Baratza Virtuoso. The Brew Pro features larger 55mm burrs engineered to reduce fines at medium to course grind sizes used for filter, drip and press brew methods.

    This was the most useful video I've seen on these grinders, especially how to use without having to use the supplied grinds collector. That's what I was looking for that other videos didn't show. I wish they offered this with a chrome body. I'm looking for something that pairs well with my polished silver Moccamaster. Thanks much.
    By the way, I bought a refurbished Jura S9 Avante Garde superautomatic espresso machine from you over TEN YEARS ago now. It shipped like a brand new model, even down to a peel off protector for the drip tray. No cosmetic wear whatsoever, and no performance issues -- even the grinder is still working as new.
    Maybe thanks to regular cleaning, descaling, and use of the Claris filter, it's STILL GOING strong after all this time.
    That was a notably stellar purchase in every way in my life thanks to your company explaining to me how Jura refurbished models work and what to expect (when I was initially wary). It's been the same as buying new and has lasted three times what I read it should have, so thank you.

      Hi UB, Thanks for the comment. Sorry none of these Eurekas are available in chrome. Many Mignon grinders do but aimed more at espresso grinding.
      Thanks for your patronage and the 10 year report on the refurbed Jura. That's a great run and refurbs can be real values! No doubt regular maintenance can keep these machines going strong for years! I'm 4-5 years on Jura at home. 6-8 brew cycles a day so somewhere in the neighborhood of 10,000 brew cycles and no issues.

    I got the Crono for a second grinder to be with my specialista. I need help my friend sent me the unit I found that I think he screwed the grind dial off or it came off idk. Anyway , I screwed it back on. I noticed that there was 2 washers attached to the dial idk if they are shims or just part of the machine. I need to zero the burrs. Is their an easy way to do this on this machine. I did the dial till you here them start to hit them back off a bit. But the number on the dial does not correspond to zero. I do mainly esspresso/Capps etc. maybe pour over. I want to use this grinder either for like pea berry or like a flavor bean or maybe just keep it filled with a Italian roast. Any help. Thanks!

    I'm just gonna toss in here. A crono does grind effectively for espresso. I would argue better than a baratza virtuoso+. I was skeptical but actually I get less clumping than my baratza and it has a lot of room for finer grind. My espresso machine will choke Before I get close to the finest grounds. It doesn't clump very much until I'm past what my espresso machine will handle either. My machine is a gaggia carrezza deluxe with a depressurized basket and naked portafiler. First shots with the eureka crono have been flawless.
    The flavor is broader than what I got on my baratza. I can pick up chocolate notes and the bright end notes of my favorite beans. I'm sure the more expensive grinders do even better.. for anyone considering budget options like an encore or virtuoso...I recommend a eureka crono over either!

    Thank you for your tests! Speaking of 25% fine fractions from Brew Pro - and what is the "normal standard" of this % for pour-over level milling should be? I mean if we get, say, 10% - will this be like top quality for V60? I mean I've done some tests too and found that if we separate the small fine grain from your coffee dose and leave the coarse mill only.. you'll get the wrong and unbalanced taste, there will be no descriptors stated on the coffee pack at all. Thank you in advance.

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  5 місяців тому +1

      Hi DK, You are welcome. There really is not a normal standard. All grinders produce a range of grind sizes and depending on brew method that range might be a good thing or a bad thing. Type of coffee and its qualities plays a role as well. There really is no simple answer. Years ago when Baratza introduced the Sette grinders they were mostly aimed at the home espresso market. But, a lot of people started using them for pour-over and other brew methods. They complained the burrs produced a lot of fines. On that feedback Baratza created an alternate BG (brew grind) burr for the grinder to reduce the fines. It did reduce the fines but how did it change flavor? That's very subjective.

    • @DimKim77
      @DimKim77 5 місяців тому +2

      @@Wholelattelovepage Thank you for your answer! I totally agree with all your statements. I've seen the Baratza BG model but the price is even higher than the Brew Pro :(
      And the main conclusion I made after the tests, that any grinding must have different fractions in the end, and if you get the "flat" taste from V60, we definitely should set the grinding wheel to more fine level.
      - Oh btw, have you seen the new Eureka "Specialita Up" model? They put the the new display and the milling control settings. Plus new 65mm burrs... Now I do not know whether I should buy old Brew Pro 55 for my V60 or wait more to get the new one. Looks ideal, but not perfect too though, because it goes as universal version (from espresso to V60 and all others).
      - Or maybe Libra Brew is the option?.. Omg it is a total mess from Eureka to understand what model would be best for V60.. why do they do that? :((
      Cheers from Russia!

      Hi sm, You're welcome for the video! If you do not need timed grinding you really cannot beat the value/quality combo of the Mignon Filtro. The Crono is essentially the same grinder but with basic timing function for ~$50 more. The Brew Pro is a big jump in price with slightly larger burrs and 2 precision timed presets. It's probably overkill for simple drip coffee. Hope that helps!

If me, I'd start with a medium grind, brew, taste and adjust grind. Generally want to go a little finer if you are getting sour flavors - under-extraction. And set grind a little coarser if getting bitter flavors - over-extraction. Hope that helps!

    So now that Eureka came out with new 50mm Pro Burrs for the Filtro after this video was made, I'm wondering how the Filtro NOW compares to the Eureka Brew Pro. I imagine the Brew Pro at about $470 more is quieter still, but what's the estimated difference in that percentage of fines in the grounds now with the new Pro Burrs in the Filtro, I'm wondering. That's a big jump in price when I'm just looking for something to grind for my Moccamaster and occasional French press. Thanks.

    Do the crono and filtro have the same burs as the espresso grinders like notte, silenzio etc. From all you have said it sound like these two grind the same as the more expensive machines, but without the bells and whistles and forks for the portafilter. Is this right? If so, seems like the best possible electric grinder a person on a budget who would rather give up convenience and keep everything in actual grinding performance. • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  3 роки тому +8

      Hi JT, Thanks for the question. Key difference is in build quality and burrs. Sette grinders are appliance grade with a lot of plastic used in construction so they will not handle abuse well. Eureka mignon grinders are mid-level machine grade with all metal construction where it counts. The Sette burrs are conical and the Mignon's are flat. Most experts prefer flats for espresso but the conical burrs in the Sette do a fine job and produce a very fluffy, clump free grind directly into a PF. Sette grinders are also rather loud compared to the Mignon's. There are 3 Sette models. I do not recommend the Sette 30 for espresso as it lacks micro adjustment of grind size - the 270 and 270Wi do have micro adjustment and do an excellent job. Grind size adjustment on the Chrono is very precise. Hope that helps!

    Looking to upgrade espresso grinder from my Baratza Encore (modded to be unstepped), debating whether to jump to the sette 270 (no w) or move to the crono and get a fork imported or 3d printed. Are these two comparable in their grind quality? What I really like about the Crono is the timer, which unfortunately the notte doesn’t have. I’ve seen the sette 30 compared to the crono, but the fact that it’s stepped vs the micro adjustment that the eureka allows, it seems not so comparable.

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  2 роки тому +2

      Hi ZZ, I don't recommend the Sette 30 for espresso grinding. It is limited by the stepped grind size. If you can take the noise, the Sette 270 is a very good grinder for espresso - Baratza considers it their best espresso grinder. It has excellent distribution into a PF and grinds very quickly and is very weight accurate dose to dose basded on timed grinding. Be aware it is susceptible to static especially in low humidity environments. Also the Sette has an appliance grade build quality. There's a fair amount of plastic used in construction and wear components like a felt friction ring between the micro/macro adjustment rings. The Sette ships with burr shims to restore fine grinding range afterr the grinder goes through a break in period. The Eureka grinders have machine grade build quality with metal used where it counts so one can asumme a longer lifespan. All that said, if I had a Sette 270 and a Crono in front of me I'd use the Sette. I've never felt limited with its macro/micro grind size adjustment. In fact, I used a 270 in this video showing how to dial in grind size: ua-cam.com/video/jOY7D02n4Cw/v-deo.html

You can definitely grind for espresso with it. But without the hook it's not very user friendly for grinding directly into a portafilter. Have a look at the Mignon Facile or Mignon Silenzio. Same internals as the Chrono but they have a PF hook. Facile is totally manual on demand with no timing functions. The Silenzio has timing similar to the Chrono and a huge selection of case color options. Hi Faith, Thanks for the question. Unfortunately there's no "right" setting for particular brew methods. Users generally eyeball the grind size based on the brew method they are using. It's a little different when making espresso which requires precisely dialing in the grind size based on one's particular brewing variables. Some grinders do have a general indication on the grind adjustment dial of settings for particular brew method. From there you can make subtle adjustments based on coffee flavor.
      Hope that helps!

    Question - I have a silenzio paired with an silvia for espresso based drinks. Using a porlex mini for brew atm which isn't ideal. I'm struggling to see the difference between the silenzio and the chrono? Are the burrs just seated further away in the chassis and unable to be adjusted til they touch like the silenzio?
    Wouldn't use the silenzio for brew, too much hassle to go backwards and forwards but I do want a brew grinder!

Differences: Silenzio can grind timed or manually on demand. Crono is time only. Silenzio has PF hook and no grinds bin. Crono has grinds bin and no PF hook. Silenzio has upgrade details on front of case. Crono is great for Brew. Good day! i am new to coffee world, just started working as barista 2 weeks ago and in love so far. I'm watching tons of videos right now, and your channel is the most pleasant to watch, really love milk steaming / latte art video :) I have a question, when i had intership, the coffee puck seemed fine, but when i ended intership and started working, i got moved to new spot with different espresso machine and coffee pucks (or packs? sorry, not sure, but the coffee that is left after extraction in the holder busket) are really watery, it's harder to clean, buskets are bit messy and packs contain too much water, to the point that sometimes there can be like 1-2 mm of water in the busket when i try to clean it, even after some time, not only when i just made espresso and instantly clean busket. My guesses are - the grind size or maybe wrong amount of portion in busket, but i'm not sure and should check the busket size, but we use 7.5g for x1 and 13g for x2 portion. Also i was tamping coffee a bit too strong (as far as i know the strenght isn't too important, just not too much or too low and i try to do the same all the time), i'm trying to tamp a bit less strong and seems just fine, but didn't work. I'm not even sure if it matters too much tho, just noticed a difference, happens often

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  3 роки тому

      Hi ds, Welcome to the coffee world! Hard to say why you have more water left after an extraction on the other machine. Could be a problem with the 3-way valve found in most machines. At the end of an extraction a valve opens which releases pressure and pulls water off the coffee puck. These valves can become blocked by coffee residue and or mineral scale deposits. Partial or full blockage of the valve can cause what you describe. Do you backflush your espresso machines on a regular basis? Backflushing with a product like Cafiza helps keep the group, shower screen and 3-way valves clean and operating properly: www.wholelattelove.com/products/urnex-cafiza-espresso-machine-cleaner

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  3 роки тому +1

      Hi AC, I do not have direct experience with that machine but can offer some tips. For espresso, the machine uses a pressurized filter basket. Use a very finely ground coffee (espresso grind size) and fill the filter basket gently to top and swipe level. Tamping/compressing the coffee is not required in pressurized filter baskets but if machine came with a plastic tamper you can compress the coffee lightly to settle in basket. For espresso run until you get 30-45ml (1-1.5oz) in your cup. For milk frothing the machine appears to use an auto frothing wand. It does the work for you. Key with those wands is keeping them very clean! Any dried milk residue will degrade frothing performance. I recently did a video using an entry-level appliance grade espresso maker which probably works similar to yours. In the video I make a cappuccino start to finish. Thanks Marc, the Bezzera looks like a great grinder. I’ve been hoping to jump into espresso, and I have been impressed with Bezzera’s offerings. I actually have a Rocky, and I use it for my drip coffee (Technivorm). I did hear about it’s clumping at finer grind settings, but I figured that wouldn’t be a problem for drip, pour over, or french press coffee. I think it works pretty well. I found a grind size setting that works well, and I don’t have to adjust it. I weigh my beans out before each brewing and never leave anything in the hopper. So far, I’m impressed with the grind consistency. I was just curious how this compared to the Eurekas for drip grinding. The two lower-end ones are in the same price range. The one thing I had to do was create a grounds container to catch the coffee. I ended up using a plastic takeout soup container with a notch cut out in the lid for the spout. Works pretty well.

      Hi MB, Thanks for the question. I differentiate products by build quality. Machine grade refers to products made of metals where it counts with little to no plastic used in construction - products built to last. Appliance grade products use a lot of plastic or less robust components in construction and are not very repairable and/or not worth the cost of a repair if needed.
