- Genie the Goldendoodle went on a mini hunger strike last week, probably because I gave her too many treats recently and now she refuses to eat her kibbles. I had to put her on a schedule to fix this unwanted behavior and to get her back on eating dry food again.
Genie's regular diet consists of kibbles + freeze dried meat, can food once in a while with occasional treats. She is a slow eater, I usually leave the food out for her so she can eat whenever. But on this scheduled diet, things has to be done a little differently, I will only give her 10 mins to eat, if she is not finished by the 10 min mark, I will take the food away from her. I only gave her about half of what she normally eats per meal, so she would be hungry for her next meal, in the meantime, make sure she gets enough exercise. It's ok for dogs to not eat for a few days, but make sure they drink plenty of water. If your dog does not eat or drink anything for a few days, please contact your vet.

I can’t relate more! Cece used to be a super picky and slow eater so I totally get how frustrating it is! I actually find Genie’s stubborness super cute lol, I laughed when I look at her poker face when mommy put her food away. And also eating all the freeze dried pieces and left the kibbles lololol that’s what Cece used to do before too! I’m glad that Genie is fine too - got a bit worried when you said that she has a pump on her hip.
It was a really big bump, her hair was getting longer so I didn’t find out about it until last week and I freaked out, I pressed it then the next day it started bleeding. Turns out to be a big cyst and I guess I popped it😅 she just finished her meds today! And she’s pretty good on eating her food for the past couple of days so I started handing out treats again😀 and a lot more treats on the way!
wow! We're going through the exact same thing, even spoon-feeding her. We put her food in front of her and she just looks at us lol and won't touch it. Her father was totally different, he would devour and gulp down his food and will attempt to steal hers too haha. I guess the tough love approach is needed. Today we'll start not giving her treats and taking away her food after 15 minutes, until the next meal. Her own survival instincts will make her eat her kibble.

@@j.w.1619 didn’t work for us in the end. My guy refused to eat kibble for 7 days and the vet said it’s too long to keep holding out. We are back to adding half a can of wet food each meal

Thanks for posting this. My Havanese is the same way your dog was. We tried this method before, but we failed at withholding snacks when he’d beg us with his body language / eyes and then we cracked and gave in during Day 2 and started feeding him what he liked. This video has reinvigorated us to try again but with better self-discipline.

Dry food means they also need lots of water. Lots! It is very dehydrating. I don’t think people are given enough of a warning about how dehydrating it can be. She is absolutely adorable.

This was super helpful! I’m on day 4 pup (11 year old Japanese Akita - super stubborn) held out for a day and a half and ate her food and then held out for another day and a half before eating again. Did yours also do this at first as you were working through this strategy or did it start eating every meal immediately following the first feed after hunger strike?
Genie would still occasionally skip her meals after it worked first, I just do the same and take her food away and she would start eating the next meal. This phase lasted about a year (skipping meals randomly but usually doesn’t last over a day), now she is very good about eating her food as soon as I put it down

@@j.w.1619 It actually worked in making him eat more but he still didn't finish all his food. I actually found out it was because he was just too lazy to use a slow food bowl, so switching back to a regular bowl made him eat everything again 😅

my pomeranian is little miss picky but shes also a stingy and selfish little girl. so when she wont eat all i have to do is start vacuuming the floor and she runs and gobbles all her food cuz she dont want the vacuum to get her food even though she didnt want ti in the first place. its the funniest thing to see and works 100% every time

Bil Jac has food you can get that is very easy to chew. You can break it with your finger. I set some out and when they don’t want their soft food they will eat on it
I am so happy I found your video today. I totally relate and it's the issue I'm having with my Sally. Please tell me the kibble that you use and also where you get the rabbit burgers and the quail treats. I had no idea to even look for stuff like that for my Sally.
Hi, you can get a variety of freeze dried food and treats in independent pet stores locally, chewy and amazon also carry some brands but not all. Some freeze dried brands I really like are: Vital Essentials, Open Farm, Dr.Marty’s, Primal, Woof, etc. The quail treats were from Korea and it was bit harder to get, but you can find similar treats from the brand Freeze Dry Australia, where they also have quail necks, and other exotic treats for dogs!
As for the kibbles, tbh I have been feeding Genie non-kibble diet for a while now if you check out my later videos, but back then I try to get the best brands, which imo was Orijen, open farm, Acana and Fromm.

It worked!!! I tried this before but incorrectly. I used to leave the food for an hour before removing it. This 3 minute rule worked great. My dog is fixed after two months of trying all sorts of foods and ways to make her eat.
How many days did your dog hold out?
@@j.w.1619 around two, she would eat a little bit and leave the rest. And I was firm, I put the food away until the next feeding time. Around day 5 she was eating normally.
I'm going thru the same thing, I'm now mixing wet food with her kibble but she's spitting the kibble out. I've stopped giving her treats . I guess I'll try to moisten her kibble before adding wet food to see if that works
Bless you for having such patience with your baby. I’m having a tough time with my pug. Her energy level is the same even when she doesn’t eat - not lethargic or anything. I have to keep trying to hand feed her until she caves. Sometime she does sometimes she doesn’t. I hate wasting her food but most times I have to throw away. My pitbull is a picky eater. I made the mistake to spoil him with chicken heads , chicken meat everyday, now he doesn't want to eat his kibble. I wanted to get him back on his kibble but his hunger strike won everytime and i found myself feeding him meat again. But now this method will surely work , i'm looking foward to it
thx for this.. gna have to do the same with my beagle. I wasn't sure how long i could starve her out and would usually give in with something more interesting than kibble after a day or so lol.
My dog are like this. Even when I mixed wet food she used to eat just the wet food and leave the kibble. How I fixed that is I soaked the kibble in water and after the kibble got soft, I mashed it and then mixed wet food in it. Now that the whole kibble is wet food flavored, she eats the whole thing
That’s another way to fix it, lots of extra work but if it works for your pup it works!
I think she likes it more when the freeze dried food is rehydrated
My 7 month old labradoodle is doing the same thing. I tried switching her food to farmers dog and she doesn't like that either. She went back to eating kibble before she would eat that, but it's still hit or miss. I'm doing the same things as you, holding back everything, but it's hard when we goto puppy class and those are treat heavy days as well as when I'm trying to reinforce what we learn at class at home. I had no idea that doodles could be so picky. She will eventually eat when she's hungry enough. I used the stella and chewy rabbit patties to crumble like you as well, but again it's hit and miss.
I'll have to try this. Otto has gotten super picky. He wouldn't eat kibble even with toppers. So I started cooking for him but then he wouldn't even eat that some days. Now I've subscribed to a dog food delivery service and even with that he's barely eating it. The struggle is real.
Some dogs are more stubborn than others, Genie gave up in 4 days to start eating everything I gave it to her, but I know some might be longer. Just make sure they have enough water and exercise they would eventually gave up😅 and definitely no treats in between during the time. Good luck!
@@GenietheGoldendoodle Treats is the big thing. We usually walk off leash at the park in the morning and so I give him treats every time he comes when I call him. Also we do agility classes so again more treats. But I'll just have to stand firm and do no treats for a while and see how that goes. I actually took him to the vet last Sunday because I was so worried something might be wrong.
@@straightottobrooklyn3440 this no treat thing should only be during the time when you are trying to get Otto back on eating food on time. If things goes right, it may only last like 1-2 days with enough exercise. I wouldn’t worry too much if he is still eating treats, but not his food😬 that’s literally the example of a picky dog haha. But if he wouldn’t eat anything, even the treats, it’s probably time to pay vet a visit just in case it is more of a health issue.
We can relate. Was doing kibble and alternating proteins with chicken, egg, salmon. My senior dog has only been eating hamburger meat, I also need to hide his medications in it. I talked to a food rep at my pet store and they gave me a sample of “Smallbatchpets” and my dog inhaled all of it in seconds then eagerly waited for more. Dog food for the first time in 2 weeks of trying to guess what he wants to eat. 🤪 I’m relieved!

@@rhayaplaza5849 currently she’s mostly on freeze dried now. Before that for kibbles, I usually go for Fromm four star, Acana or Merrick backcountry
We gave up after 2 days. This situation is so frustrating. We hand feed our Maltipoo and give him multiple options everyday till finally he eats something.

I'm so glad it worked out! one question from my case, my dog had this reflux thing from eating strange thing from the walk and had bacteria, she got it cured after some meds but still very picky and i'm scared if i skip meals she would get the reflux back. can u you advice on my case? thank you so much...
You can try adding salmon oil or fish oil into her diet to see if she’ll take to that.

I think this is a poodle thing with every poodle I meet. Mine is still a puppy only 6 months old and it sucks Bc I don’t wanna have to not feed him for days to get him to eat :( will it stunt his growth?

My dog can go for 5 days without eating.
He is 16 years old with Arthritis he takes Rimadyl and Yu move tablets which are very good.
Vet said it's a physiological not physical problem.
This problem has only started since we moved house 12 months ago.

I having such a hard time with my 9 month puppy when he goes without eating he will start vomiting his bile that’s when I get nervous and force down his throat I hurts me to do this but I’ve tried 7 different types of food including homemade even organic food and nothing . And I know it’s just him being picky cause once in a while he eats on his own for the most part if he likes the food he wants me to hand feed him . I am going to the same thing now , i have 2 dog , one bigger is past 4 months ago and my little brownie is lonely does not want to eat , i trying to change better brand dog food and i was worry about it make home food mixed into some dry kibble food , but he refused to it . Went to petco work there say give dry food . I change dog food to Taste of Wild now and he is still refused to eat , he hated blue buffalo puppy food . As far if i add a Little chicken breast meat , stew he will eat some food , but still not want to eat .

My dog stopped eating his kibble, don’t think he could be bothered chewing it anymore, I put it in a blender now with warm water and blend it to a paste which gives it more flavour and digests easier. I throw in a few bits of ready cooked chicken on top and he wolfs the lot

Do you think it’s safe to do the same with a 4 months old puppy? He’s stubborn as hell and loves wet food but lately eats no kibbles or only eats them when hand-fed. Think we’ve spoiled him.
Hey Martin, thank you for the support!
I would be more careful with puppies but the concept is the same, but I would first rule out other reasons before you start doing this to your pup. If you are sure the picky behavior is not caused by any medical reasons, then you can start. The general rules are the same, make sure to take the food away after certain time and no hand feeding, you can walk away after putting down the bowl and come back after like 15 mins. Have a consistent schedule every day (3 times a day for a 4-month old pup) and only provide the amount for the one meal only, do not double it if your pup skip like one or two meals that day, no treats while doing this training (which means you might have to pause your other trainings for a while), plenty of stimulation, mental and physical during the training time and last but not least, make sure your pup has access to enough water. No dogs would ever starve themselves to death, but be sure to watch your pup and make sure the energy level is ok during the whole time. Good luck!

@@GenietheGoldendoodle Thanks a ton! We’re at day 3 and already seeing lots of progress! I mix the kibble with a little bit of pâté for puppies and it did wonders. I gradually reduce the amount of pâté.

@@MartinMarchev glad to hear! Once your pup starts eating on schedule you can resume all the normal trainings with treats! If the picky behavior develops again in the future, just do the same and it should quickly corrects his/her behavior. The first time is always the hardest!

she did threw up (in the morning usually, I don’t recall she threw up other times during the day) it’s quite normal when a dog hasn’t eaten for a while. I don’t think she threw up everyday though. It should be fine as long as there is no other symptoms present. It is just upset stomach due to being hungry, and once she started eating, the vomit stopped.

My German shepherd does the same thing, I also used to give him toppings on the food but he used to just eat the chicken toppings or broth and leave the kibble .
Been following the same strict schedule with him and giving him soaked kibble since he likes it that way , I give him a treat when he finishes his food properly.
He has started eating food but still gets stubborn some days so I don't give him any treats that day

I think you are doing exactly right by not giving him any treats on the day when he doesn’t finish his food properly. I would also always follow the schedule and take the food away on time. This is more so to prep them into a habit that they will only get food at meal time so they will eat anything that put in front of them.
My dog is actually mostly on freeze dried food now, but on occasions when I put kibbles with toppers in front of her, she would still be eating them (I also found out she likes them soaked with warm water or bone broth as well)
Is toppers necessary? I don’t think so, they can certainly survive on kibbles alone without any treats or toppers but I like to spoil my pup :)
@@GenietheGoldendoodle well thanks for your advice. Yeah I also spoiled him by giving varies toppers but it backfired on me 😂so avoiding them now.
My dog also likes kibble in soaked water only , plus I've read it somewhere that it's much better for their gut health too if given soaked.

I was having this trouble with my dog I reduced he was a stray I was giving him kibble and can to put some weight on him then switched to a better quality dog food so he could get all his nutrients he ate it at first but stopped so I went back to the old stuff he was eating it and stopped so I switched back again and was having problems getting him to eat add water eggs rice to his food and nothing so I stop giving in on him I heated up his food in the oven seems to be working now
I have to do this because my dog will only eat boiled chicken! I put that as a topper in all my dogs dry food but yeka is the one that won’t eat it she started being picky yesterday 😑

Vital Essentials sell rabbit Pattie’s, you can buy directly from their website or chewy. I haven’t been able to get the quail myself for a while, it was from overseas and stocks have been inconsistent for the past few months.
How early in the morning do you feed your dog? Mine is 9am, 3pm, 9pm ... but the morning one is where mine eats the less, does this ever happened to you?
Is yours still a puppy? My dog only eats twice a day, she’s been eating only twice a day since about 11 months old. I usually feed her around 9:30am and around 8:30pm. I used to feed her around 6:30pm but noticed sometimes she is just not hungry enough, so I pushed it back another 2hr.
@@GenietheGoldendoodle is 7 months. I would like to change twice a day when she is able to eat well the 3 times, but it is weird, I know she is hungry in the morning, still doesn’t eat all its kibble, so she gets even more hungry at 3pm and 9pm, so she has nothing else to eat than the kibble

Ok so now what do I do when my dog is practically starving and throwing up bile and still refusing to eat
My dog is soo picky, shes a toy poodle, poodles are known to be picky eaters but i didn't know its this bad, my girl usually doesn't even like dog treats, i use the way you show in the video and it usually works when shes refusing, eventually shes hungry enough. She also eats better when theres competition, like if my parents dog is around.

My dog is now on full raw/freeze dried diet. But back then after we did this, she continued eating kibbles.We did have some set back here and there and we did this exercise again, but none of those setbacks lasted 4 days again, usually just within 1 day she’ll start eating.

If you go through the video it showed what I did step by step in those 4 days. In short no treat, only water and if she doesn’t eat on time take the food away.

Where can I find some of those Quail treats??
That brand is called momstick and is from South Korea, there is also a brand called HP that sells whole freeze dried quail (also from Korea). Freeze Dried Australia sells freeze dried quail necks. I usually buy them from overseas and ship them myself by sea to US. You might be able to find some in local small boutique Asian pet stores.

My dog does not like kibble at all she only eats rice with milk and when she starts being picky I give her rice with egg or chicken she loves it .
My shih tzu does the same thing. He was a picky eater but would still eat . My roommates would feed him human food so it made it worse .
My half grown puppy does this, unless there is another dog in the house. Then she will gobble up anything to prevent the canine visitor from getting it.

My Boston Terrier does this all the time. I've stopped worrying about it. He'll eat when he gets hungy and sometimes it takes 2 to 3 days before he'll finally eat. I only give him dry now so that nothing rots and I can leave it out for days until he eats it.
Exactly that’s what I say about my Rottweiler when his azz get hungry enough he’ll eat you can lead a horse to water but can’t make him drink

Feels better to know that you are strict! I’m afraid to do that because my dog is hungry but doesn’t choose to eat her kibble
Omg my dog us the same as yours. We put freeze dried food in her kibble but she just ate all her kibble.
At one point we had three different bags of kibble which we alternated but she was still picky
I love my dog but gotta be strict when comes to this. It helps form a habit for her so she would eat whatever I put in front of her at meal time!
@@GenietheGoldendoodle my dog is still a puppy so I was super reluctant to do this but I started and she’s eating her food! I also cut her meals from 3 to 2 so I guess she’s more hungry in general. She still doesn’t eat all her food but at least she’s eating

Just rescued a 10 month old Chihuahua pup who was only fed human food. Day 5 of him refusing to eat kibble. I've managed to get him to eat maybe a handful of raw coated Stella and chewy. He doesn't eat treats either. He has been to vet for a wellness check and he's just picky
oof this is a tough one, stubborn little guy. If he eats the raw coated Stella and chewy I would continue offer him that. Have you also tried adding warm water and mix with the kibbles? Some dogs prefer it that way.
Had one that would only eat 9 Live dry cat food. No dog food
I slap 2x and she eats very Quickly, no joke in my Yard.
My miniature poodle refuses kibble. I’m going to have to do that, but I want to make sure she likes her kibble. She’s so fussy and would have definitely spit out the pill.
My puppy is literally the same . She is super picky and lays on the floor all day long to the point where I have to force feed her with a syringe and that's the only way that she eats sometimes.
Hi Brian I have been force feeding my puppy for 5 months with syringe and I really want him to eat on his own and not be picky. Have you figured something out that worked for your puppy
I have a picky poodle. I usually give her what's on the dinner table. I take meat and mix in grains, veggies, (sometimes even a lil fruit) and she prefers it over dog food. I've had her for over a year already 🙂 Not all human food is for dog consumption though. I avoid onions, garlic, grapes, etc, for example. I do give her things like ham sometimes. There is not enough onion and garlic powder in ham to hurt her. I give her human food almost everyday. When i don't and she's stuck with dog food, I take the dog food outside and show her I'll give it to the neighbors dogs if she doesn't eat it... so then she eats it.

@@beautiful20106 I've had s cat for 13 years who is healthy. We also feed her food right off the dinner table. She's had alot of ham in her lifetime and she's fine. Food like ham isn't as bad as the internet says it is. The internet can really make u paraniod. And I've never noticed ham causing any unhealthy side effects when it comes to my poodle either. Although plain meat with no spices like chicken is healthier for them then ham will ever be since it contains no spices, perservatives, etc.
And u know what! My dog has consumed onions, garlic, & grapes, before as well! And nothing happened! She did not get sick at all! So trust me it's as bad as the internet says it is. By the way I know garlic, onion, grapes, is bad for dogs & do not give it to her anymore 🙃 I just didn't know at the time that it was bad for them. But she's a healthy energetic poodle with no health issues.
Dealing with this at this very moment with my 20 month old Australian Shepherd , going to wait her out wish me luck, she’s stubborn . 😅

You can try giving him/her a small treat before bed to prevent the throwing up of bile(like a greenie). As long as it’s not enough to keep her full, she’ll eventually come to eat her food
Im a new dog dad. And i have a German shepard puppy. The older he gets, He became picky and i feel bad when he doesnt eat it. Im worried that he might get sick lol. So what i did is that, i mix his treats to his dog food and he started eating everything. Is this a bad habit ? i dont want him to take advantage of it
This is what I did when my dog first became picky, and it got worse. Now I use the treat as a reward to build a habit, it’s positive reinforcement. Now my dog would come for me after her meal, showing off her empty plates to get her treats

My dog won’t eat. I try to put a little cheese on it and sometimes she will eat it. I don't want to keep doing that. Sometimes, she will eat it if Hamburg is on it. But not all the time. I would do what you do and take it away, but she pukes if she doesn't eat.

Try to make some homemade food for your dog. I've found great recipes on youtube. I mix it with kibble and water. It adds more nutrients and moisture to their meal. Fresh is always best.

Did he not vomit yellow bile during his strike? I need to discipline my picky dog but always worry because of the hunger pukes and I eventually give in
The longest hunger strike my dog ever went on was this one, she ended up with no 💩 but didn’t get to the point where she was vomiting. I made sure she had enough water the entire time. Dogs will be fine not eating for a few days, just make sure they always have access to water.
Ugh my poodle is doing the same ! Will refuse dry food , was worried because he would throw up bile, once I mixed wet food with dry , he would only eat wet . Took him to vet they told me he was picky eater . He is going on strike day 2 today .
@@LuisSanchez-hn3dp you gotta stay strong and not give in or else he will learn that he can get better food by going on strike. as long as he is healthy he will not starve himself to death. my dog is now eating normally again and on a schedule after maybe months of intermittent hunger strikes as he finally learned better food will not come if he turns his nose away at his bowl, just be patient

Yes, only water, make sure they have access to plenty of water though. Dogs will be fine without eating for a few days. If you have a stubborn one, it might last some time but don’t give in, it will work.
