As epic as this film is, the ACTUAL history surrounding these events is even MORE epic. The REAL Balian d'Ibelin is one of the most badass Crusader leaders that ever existed, and this film BARELY even scratched the surface of what made him so fascinating. If you want to see the true story of Balian d'Ibelin, with as much historical research done as possible, read the novel trilogy covering his actions during the events leading up to and during the Third Crusade written by Crusades historian Dr. Helena Schrader (Book 1: Knight Of Jerusalem, Book 2: Defender Of Jerusalem, and Book 3: Envoy Of Jerusalem). I own all three of these books myself, and they are easily some of the greatest historical novels/biographies I've ever read.
