Car will be over weight (GVM) by the time you add tow ball down load weight to car GVM. Eg car weight is 2840kg with you in it + the misses then the caravan is going to put an extra say 100kg ( just a guess, you’ll need to weigh it) on the towball which adds to the car weight. So you’ll be 2840kg + 100kg + the misses.
@@JS_Adventure look up “Complete guide to heavy towing (GVM, GCM & ATM explained) | Auto Expert John Cadogan” he does a cracking video on it. You’ll have to watch your axle weights too
@@JS_Adventure yeah it’s pretty close. How much fuel do you get in the sub tank ? Don’t fill it when towing. Those drawers are about 50kg I think. Take the back seats out again. What’s the van towball weight? It Should say on the compliance plate ( it won’t be 100% accurate you’ll need to weigh it ). I personally wouldn’t do a GVM upgrade. If Toyota wanted it to carry an extra 500kg they would of made them that way from the factory. If you did a GVM upgrade you’ll be putting an extra 500kg strain on an ageing car. Engine and transmission ( whole driveline) has to work harder to pull all that weight chassis has to work harder to keep it all up.
Cheers! Yeah it’s definitely not worth a gvm upgrade so it might have to be the seats out again, unfortunately the tanks are joined so can only fill both at the same time. I’ve got a hold of tow ball weight scales and will have a look in the morning
I also tow with a Prado (a lighter Van), a good vid to check out is Cam Wild (Wide Touring) on weighs, also it is recommended to tow in 4S, I have install a Scan Gauge to monitor the transmission temps.
Awesome video Jack. Thanks Mum and Dad for allowing the caravan loan we love their videos 💜💜💜💜 woohoo, Sorcha’s coming back. Jack you must be excited to see her. Look forward to seeing the next episode Jack. Keep up the good work 💜🍻 The last video and others before them are just so interesting and places a great deal of us may not go to. So well done 👍
My 2020 prado as configured with bull bar, winch, extra battery plus other stuff like fridge, boxes of water and recovery gear tools was approx 2600. My caravan loaded was 2700. Basically with the towball download I have to leave the 2 fat kids at home. Fuel consumption went from 10 ltrs per 100k unhitched went to just under 20 litres per 100 k. Done a few km so pretty standard.
Great video Jack. Yes, it’s a real juggling act managing vehicle and trailer weights. I look forward to seeing your progression. There would be so many caravaners out there driving around unknowingly overloaded. It’s only when an accident occurs and/or an insurance claim is made that they’d find out. Good to see you’re onto it. Cheers.
Cheers mate! Really only just looked into it and thought I would be fine! Turns out I’ve been overloaded for a fair while and a lot of other prado owners will be well and truly over the limit
I own a 2015 Prado 3ltr almost identical set up to yours ,we tow a 2.1 tonne van fully loaded water, food and clothes. Gvm upgrade to 3300kg car comes in under gcm tows quite well , average fuel is around 15 ltrs per 100. We tow with the auto in 4th and it actually doesn’t have any effect on fuel economy and takes load of trans and engine. I’m very happy with our set up 😊
There a bloody great car but it seems their only downfall is the GVM. It felt great towing so might have to look into a GVM upgrade in the future if we want to utilise the car a bit better
G'day Jack, Welcome to the wobbly box club 😀😀😀having a full sized van is the way to go, pull ova, sort the awning out, 2 x chairs, drinks in hand, job done 👍👍👍, looking forward to your new travels 👍👍👍 Cheers Andy
Good job on getting the car and van under weight. as other people have said remember to add your towball weight onto car, we decided it was worth getting ours put over the scales (caravan weigh guy) to get exact weights on ours before we set off to the big island (we're from tassie). Our Hybrid van was perfect 70kg under GVM but the ute was well over so at the last minute we had to get a GVM Upgrade.
Cheers mate! Have picked up a set of trailer ball scales and should have it sorted today, I’m leaving it really late for a GVM upgrade but also find it hard to justify an upgrade as it still doesn’t get me the GVM of a Ute
It's such a nightmare to get your head around. Cam from @wildtouring did a great video on getting your head around it. I even stayed awake while watching it.
Having recently gone through this myself I would suggest you get the outfit professionally weighed. Some of the points of weight you cannot get at a public weigh bridge. When and if you are pulled over for a weight check they will check the weight load of your cars front axle, rear axle and tow ball. The angle of the van and proable the weight over each van axle. When I had mine weighed the load on each side of the car, van and same when hitched. A thorough and professional weigh will assist in determining how to manage weight distribution.
Hey mate, it might be a good idea to get your set up weighed by a professional. You need to make sure that you haven’t overloaded your axles on the Prado. You also need to find out the tow ball weight, it’s normally about 10% of your van weight but when you hook the van up to the car the down force from the van (tow all weight) adds to the gvm on your car. A caravan weighing company will work it all out for you and show you how to move the loads around to better balance out the car and the van. Good luck
Cheers mate! I did forget about it but hopefully by the end of the week and next episode I’ll have it sorted. Picked up a set of tow ball scales to check it out and go from there!
For connecting the van and carlook at replacing the ball hitch setup with a McHitch setup. Its simplicity in itself to connect. Its fully articulating, so if the vav should roll the car wont go with it.
I love the Prado, I had one for years, but the it's GVM and GCM is just pathetic for a top selling 4WD, I know Toyota has finally upgraded the max tow rate they can tow now. I loved my Prado, but to do what you had to do, chunking out everything out of the car, I said no, it had to go. I did checkout a 200 LC, but would needed to rob the bank, even a 100 series with low k's was a big shock, the prices were just stupid. So went to our local caravan parks and talked to as many caravaners as I could and for me the only one I could afford and I know what you will say, it was a 2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee V6 diesel. I'm talked to at least 25 owners towing some big vans and not one said it was a bad decision, most said, it's the best tow car they ever owned. So bit the bullet got a 2010 Jeep Grand cherokee V6 with very low k's for a great price and boy does it tow well, so much more power than the Prado, it's not funny and can tow up 3500kg. In over 5 years, only had to replace a front drive shaft CV bearing, $250, can't complain about that.
I know you like me, love the Prado, but trying to tow a medium caravan it just does do your head in. When I decided sell and with you having a Prado Kakadu, you will get very good money and there is so many better tow cars available in that price range. I did go with a Mazda BT50 for a while and it was a great tow car with plenty of GVM, but was not a ute fan, so that why I went with Jeep Grand Cherokee V6 diesel. I only went that way because of price, so I'm sure you will not go in the direction. The new Ford Everest Sport with the new V6 diesel looks like a great car, great tow car with good GVM and 3500Kg towing and close to what you may get for your Prado, it's only a thought thou.
You must add towball mass! Ditch the side rails and rock sliders, roof rack and awning, these things will likely add up to the 100-150kg towball mass and you just don’t ‘need’ them.

Hi Jack, Yeh! Very confusing mate when it comes to weights. Mate what was the towball weight of vav, which of course adds weight to your gvm, l don't know if people realise that. The height of the tow hitch can be varied by way of getting a new hitch receiver into the Reece hitch. I have an adjustable one on mine so I can get the correct ride height of the van. With your prado slipping in and out of 5th gear, does it have a sports mode? I know with my ranger (6 speed) the manual says not to tow in top gear but use the sports mode and this keeps it in 5th most of the time. Too much wear and tear using top gear.

It is not unimaginable all 8 people could easily be over the 80kg mark eg a football side being driven to a game.
