My wife picked up the album up in my local thrift store recently . Pure luck . Someone donated it framed with the back showing . The wife read a few lines and thought I would like it . Ha ha ha I looked it up and it was about the first Chess blues album because at the time they were putting out singes for juke boxes and yes it is great as are many of Junior wells albums . Fantastic musician and the voice is to die for .

I remember seeing Junior Wells at Rosas Lounge in Chicago 20+yrs ago. During intermission he went behind the bar and poured shots for himself and talked to the patrons. He had a liking for my girl friend and was hitting on her. The next set he started playing and was completely hammered. At the end he clonked one of the horn players in the head with his microphone. This started an argument on the stage. The band kept playing. At the end of the set he crashed into the drums set, out cold. The band carried him out the back door. That was the end of the show.
It was one of my favorite shows I have ever seen!!!

+Hervé Desfontaines There's a story about this Sonny Boy Williamson song and Junior Wells' relation to it. My comment will give you the outline. I've seen this reported in a few places, pretty sure one of them was Buddy Guy's fantastic autobiography. It was 1953. "Hoodoo Man Blues" was Junior Wells' first record. He accompanied the record company owner to visit a DJ (don't remember the company, the exec's or the DJ's names at the moment), to ask the DJ to to play it on the air. As an enticement, the record company exec put $15 in the cover. The DJ got angry at the $15 (apparently $15 wasn't enough, because this couldn't have been the first time the DJ received a gift like that), smashed the record on the floor and told them to clean it up and get out. Junior Wells was traumatized by the experience and didn't want to play the tune again. Bob Koester (of Delmark) managed to get him to play it in 1965 with Buddy Guy's help. If it's one of your favorites, I'm pretty sure you know the version on the Delmark album that bears its name. What a tune, what an album!

I think it's from the "concert" film "The American Folk Blues Festival," shot in Europe in the mid-60s. Features an amazing lineup of blues giants, totally worth renting; it may be available for streaming on N**flix. I think I got it by mail back when I still subscribed to that service. For any of you who are not sure (duh!) who the guitar player is, go to Otis Rush on YouTuibe and look at "I Can't Quit You". It was clearly recorded at the same venue/show as this song was. Of course, those of you who don't know who Otis is also likely think "I Can't Quit You" was written by Page/Plant.

There was a good audience for Junior, for Otis, and for all the working bluesmen, but it was a tavern audience, not a huge concert one. As the streets got rougher, so did the taverns, and things were bad. But to say that these giants weren't appreciated, or had no audience here is foolish. They all did/do pretty well on personal appearances and record/tape/cd sales here in the Chi.
